If it’s the one I’m thinking of, umpire called it touched. Might not have been obvious from the ground because of the noise - Fritsch himself seemed to be lining up for the set shot initially.

Frankly, I'd prefer Tmac but at least Weid was ok even if he didn't set the game ablaze by a long shot.

Maybe he just needs some more confidence.

I think this is spot on. As supporters we need to have an expectation that teams want to be incredibly defensive against us. If they don’t play that way they get sliced open like GWS last week.

We are far, far from an ugly team - but we are going to get in a lot of scraps this year because on paper it’s the only way teams can stay in games. Every press conference this year Goodwin talks about patience. He knows it, the players know it, and we just need to remember it.

It was an ugly game only in terms of our inaccuracy. 

We really did dominate and if we kicked better could have easily won by ten goals.

It was a big game on a big stage so it could have gone sour. Plus an in form Viney was out and so was Lever. Our fwd line is far from settled with bbb back after a long absence and Sw still struggling.

We did very well.

We are playing 4 qtrs of defensive minded strangulation of teams as they slow the game down in a misguided attempt to bore us into making a positional mistake. It rarely comes and when we pounce it is only our execution and decision making that stops us slinging the ball through middle and deep into the forward line.

Sometimes we are pure and sometimes we get away with it and sometimes the other team loses patience. And sometimes all three things happen in 6 minutes and we have kicked 5 and the game is over.

The confidence we seem to have is what really sets us apart. It was the same last year when the game was often on a knife's  edge we seem to find another level in the third and turn the game on its head.

A good summary I reckon LITD.

Sitting on the Oposite wing to Langdon ( the James Jordan Wing at present) the ball was often in dipsute with some ferocious attacks by Dees in defending and repelling moves by the Tiges.

Can't criticise effort and commitment at all times.

I took solace in the team kicking 10.2 in the 3rd 1/4 last week and put this inaccuracy last night to 'on of those games'

The takeout in the media was the Dees could have won by 12 goals plus they were that superior except for kicking.

As for our 4th quarters, the game plan might be ... 'You (the opposition) will find it hard to score against our pepped-up zones and defensive structures and if you play into our hands, we will be able to score'

Done with a decent lead of course and that breakaway lead often happens in the 3rd quarters (or earlier)

So the days of running up the score (for percentage) could be looked at as less important than saving the legs

He may not be BOG every week, but he's improving and a better option than Tmac atm according to the match committee. I note that 2 match reports I read this morning had him amongst our best

I don't even worry about the first half anymore - unless a team gets 8+ goals up on us by halftime I just calmly wait for the 3rd quarter where we put the opposition to the sword. If it's relatively even at half time I have full confidence we will run over the top in the 2nd half.

Sums us up perfectly. Have you been sneaking glimpses of Goodwin's game plan notes?

The great thing is we have been playing this game plan for 5+ years, but only in the last 18 months have the players fully committed to the gut running involved, and reached a skill level where we can execute. We almost shot ourselves in the foot last night with atrocious goal kicking but got through with that 6 minutes in the 3rd quarter.

Yep, I said a few weeks ago that sooner or later we’ll come up against a team that fancies itself against us, and that I hope it’s Hawthorn. Fingers crossed they win today and come in to our game with their tails up.

Richmond’s strategy was to hold on to us at every opportunity and play the numbers knowing that the umpires weren’t going to pay them all. They held and scragged and ran into us to try and wear us down and get away with what they could. It was the wily old veterans clinging on for dear life against the new champions. Clog up the backline and try and play as close to the line as possible knowing they will give some away but get away with most. More apparent at the ground than on replay. 
 

that’s why the free kick count was what it was. Richmond supporters complaining need to understand the way their team played the game quite deliberately. I haven’t paid much attention to them all year but stats would suggest that’s the way they play every week.

There were plenty of question marks on whether we might have a premiership hangover, but honestly it looks like a continuation of last season. The fact it was only 22 points in the end will mean the domination we had for practically the entire game will get lost. The last team to go 6-0 to start their season after a premiership was the Hawks premiers of 2013. They ended up losing in round 8. 

Sorry mate, Hawthorn lost to Geelong in round 5 in 2014 (Geelong 15.16.106 def Hawthorn 12.15.87).

The last reigning premiership team to go 6-0 to start a season was Collingwood in 2011, they lost round 7. Only 3 reigning premiership teams apart from us have started 6-0 in the modern afl era (post 1990). Collingwood 2011 (lost at 6-0), Geelong 2008 (8-0) and West Coast 2007 (6-0), ominously none went back to back so if we do better than them next week we’ll hopefully become the first premiership team to start 6-0 + and win a back to back premiership. I’ve covered all this in the records we can be proud of thread.

Difficult to see at the ground with a pack around him and not having tv commentary to hear the umpire.

On the whole I don't think we played 'our way' in the fwd half for much of the night hence all the points.

You’re correct, I think I may have got tripped up with flicking back and forward between seasons but you’re spot on that the 2013 reigning premiers Hawks lost to Geelong in round 5.
