Carlton looked really really ordinary.  Looking forward especially to the third quarter when we meet them.

Played for them as an Under 16: got among the best players in an Under 16 Semi, my opponent was Laurie Sandilands. I kicked 2 that day,

I raised an eyebrow when Pittonet got injured and wondered if the same thing would happen again around stoppages as against the Suns. It didn't stop Carlton winning clearances, but it was like the air was sucked out of them when he went off.

He's a very good ruckman Pittonet and has a good record against Max. They seem to struggle if everything isn't going perfectly to plan.

Curnow and McKay are a scary proposition though. Definitely the most exciting tall duo in the league.

I hope Carlton continue to stumble.

Fremantle look very good. They are fast and play team defence. Their midfield is not as good as ours but it’s talented enough to get the ball and use it against anyone.

Up there with Brisbane now IMO.

Watching the game last night I feel Freo are a genuine contender this season. They’re playing with confidence that reminds me of us last season, but there’s a passion and desire to do team acts that stands out for me. Lobb is a dangerous tall forward that would seriously challenge May, while they’ve got the smalls at ground level putting pressure on.

Will be interesting to see where they sit come round 11 when we face them at the G. If they’re right up there it might well be the biggest game between the two clubs since we lost to them in the finals in (I think) ‘05.

I was impressed too, they look polished across the ground. Definitely a top 4 contender in my view.

With Brisbane, Sydney and now Freo all being serious contenders, it will be so important to finish top 2 to avoid interstate travel in finals.

Freo system is very similar to ours

and their players seem to have improved. Lachie Schultz for instance seems to have lifted his game this year

Applies to them too!

Crows no hope with umpires strictly applying "free kick Bulldogs" policy.

Isn't it reprehensible that our game - through the snot goblins - has been reduced to this?

There are similarities but I regard our depth as powerfully unique - and a real fortress of continued, pack-leading performances across the season - certainly to finish top two.

You want to see a beautiful game destroyed by officialdom, rules and the lingering threat of liability, go watch a Super Rugby game.

4 of us went last night absolutely pumped for the 2 games in a row we’d see. We had a Pom and Kiwi who know and love the game, we left at half time of the second match just totally deflated. It has become a slow, boring, over officiated snooze fest with constant stoppages for video refs and reviews.

The scrums take so long to set… every stoppage just sucks the air out of the game.

No doubt about the longer-term effects of officialdom - we are moving to a position of late-adolescence towards adulthood in this regard - and it ain't pleasant for the fee-paying spectators, the players and the evenness of our competition. Righteous time wasters and showmen on the ego run.

Rugby union has become unwatchable. League is dull but at least free flowing

Great to see West Coast get smashed again last night.  Have seen this comming for a long time with the top heavy age profile of their list.

It would be the first time in thier history, as they usually seem to bonce back into contention fairly quickly, but I'm hoping they are in for a long rebuilding process having given up overs for Tim Kelly and holding onto the veterans for too long in a Hawthorn/Geelong like manner of trying to squeeze one last flag out of the current group mentality.

Did they still have half a side out with Rona?

Under Buckley, Collingwood finished lower on the ladder every season until they got an assistant coach called Longmuir.

Longmuir revolutionised their snail-like sideways ball movement and got them into a grand final. As soon as he was gone, they reverted and immediately went back down the ladder.

Freo are a dangerous side for any team and can't be taken lightly. Only need a bit to go wrong on the day and they could get the choccies.

Amazing how my level of despise for Carlton supporters reignited when they beat us in a preseason game (with the assistance of eight 50 metre penalties given against us for showing dissent which resulted in four goals)

The way their supporters carried on you could have been excused for thinking that they won the GF! (Ironically, I don’t mind their players and their new game style)

Well done Freo.  It’s not that I hold grudges and can’t let go.

Yep they are Melbourne like. A seriously good side that will give the flag a shake (based on last nights performance).

GAMEDAY: Match SIM vs North Melbourne

After an agonizingly long off-season the 2025 AFL Premiership Season is almost upon us and the Demons have their first practice hit out against the Kangaroos in a match simulation out at Arden Street. The play start time was brought forward from the initial 11am bounce, due to the high temperatures forecast.  The match sim will consist of four 25-minute qu

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
