Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Nick Riewoldt (who of course has gone through just this) seemed to think self-preservation kicks in at a certain point - like "I don't want to be hurt like that again" so you don't work quite as hard, commit quite as much, and so on.

Ahhh right. And if that only happens to 3-4 good players on your list, that’s probably enough to see a drop off.

Make it a multi with May perpetually kicking out to the left HBF. Nothing surer in life

What would be offered on the following 24 leg multi?

  1. Dogs loosing the free lick count,
  2. May kicking to the right,
  3. Daniher kicking a goal from 15 metres in front,
  4. Malthouse behaving like a top bloke,
  5. Dermott stringing together three sentences culminating in a comprehendible paragraph,
  6. The AFL admitting its ticketing regime is shiiiiite,
  7. Selwood not getting a free kicking for ducking next week,
  8. Viney squibbing the hard ball,
  9. Any AFL footballer not saying at the end of game interview, "we knew they'd come out hard",
  10. Eddie saying "we are racist at Colinwood",
  11. Brock saying, "I was only pulling your leg",
  12. Neeld saying, "I got it wrong",
  13. Toby saying "Matt and I are as tight as a Russian bodybuilder's quads",
  14. Any AFL footballer not answering a question in the next week beginning with 'yeah/nah',
  15. Gary Rohan being best on ground in a final,
  16. Goodwin saying "it was an error of judgement to trade with Norf for Jackson and Pickett",
  17. Fyfe, Bailey Smith and Natanui getting proper haircuts,
  18. Papley buying some shorts that actually fit,
  19. Razor Ray not imposing himself on a game in 2022,
  20. Gryan Miers changing his name by deed poll,
  21. Mitch McGovern saying "here's a $500,000 refund",
  22. Tom Hawkins pipped at the post for the 2023 Oscar for Best Actor,
  23. The AFL saying, "we got it wrong with the Giants and GCS", and finally,
  24. The Deez are no chance in 2002.

Port Adelaide showed it all over the ground in last year’s Preliminary Final.
None of them wanted a hard ball

For instance, as you and most others know, the handpass used to require a clenched fist punching the ball from another hand/arm that was stationary

Not stationary. Nowhere in the rules does it say "stationary", nor has it ever.

Regardless, why are blatant throws that are throws in anyone's language not called?

And it's gone way past blaming the umps ... this is a rules of the game issue which is an AFL issue

If only there was some branch or arm of the AFL that was responsible for enforcing the rules in the AFL comp. Perhaps we could encourage them to look into these matters.

I don't know about the technicalities but having a stationary arm was what was taught in juniors (in my day)

It didn't have to be completely rigid but that arm certainly couldn't be moving about

Now, the momentum of the ball is often governed by the hand holding the ball ... I'm baffled as to why these rules are always 'stretched'

For instance, for decades a player was required to kick the ball over the mark ... that's no longer the case either.  There are numerous other examples of how the game has been redesigned

The coaches try it on and the league lets them do what they like (in a general sense)

I suspect those overseeing proceedings prefer to see the umpires continuing to cop the wrath

Because that's what happens.  They (the umpires) are at the coalface and it's just easier to blame them

In a way it's an ideal solution for those who are supposedly running the sport because it's just more of the same for the umps anyway.  They are so used to all the criticism's that it's probably just water off a duck's back

But that has never made it right in my eyes because we rarely get satisfactory solutions

Every year is like groundhog day

24 free kicks to 10. Not surprising of course. That’s standard for the Dogs. Being logical and impartial, given that this is a repeating phenomenon, there can be only two explanations for it. 1. That the umpires are heavily predisposed to pay more frees to the Dogs than their opposition for reasons other than being deserved, or at least ‘equally deserved’ , or 2. that the Dogs are just spectacularly good at drawing fairly adjudicated frees, the obvious implication being that they train to create this. Can there be any other explanations, because it’s gone way beyond random? Way, waaaaay beyond.

well put. It’s so obvious now it’s genuinely embarrassing for the AFL … or it should be.  That the dogs must train for it is clearly obvious now. while I hate it I can’t help but feel if it’s allowed then maybe we should too? they’ve literally hit another player on the ground when yr plus 14 or 15 kicks.

But there’s more to it as well isnt there… as you pointed out. It doesn’t explain why so many frees are missed to opposition teams v the dogs. Its like the umps WANT to give the dogs free kicks. 2 blatant mark infringement 50’s against Weightman let go, 2 really iffy “ unrealistic attempts” given to them. It’s spoiling the game.

I heard a stat some weeks ago (wish I’d paid more attention) that teams who lose the grand final by more than 45 points don’t win a final the next year. Something like 70% don’t make finals at all. And the bigger the margin, the worse it gets (sample group gets smaller though). Ergo, Dogs won’t make finals, and if they do manage to scrape in, they’re going straight out.

Yeah the stats show that usually a top 4 side from the previous year misses finals

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
