JAKE BOWEY APPRECIATION THREAD.

Jake Bowey's addition to the team last year in retrospect was a masterstroke by Goody and the selectors. He deservedly is due the praise and recognition he has received since his debut. A terrific advertisement for the game of Australian rules at the elite level. Shows that a smaller statue and slender physique are no barrier to a determined young man on the rise. Not afraid to mix it with the bigger bodies where lesser angels may fear to tread.

Get the comparison with Brett Lovett skill wise, but to my mind certainly has more zip and mobility, nor is he as robust. A natural footballer with a very good football bloodline like young Charlie Spargo. Who has made an auspicious start to his career. Long into the season may his talismanic run of winning games continue.

Bowey has a premiership and two rising star nominations without losing a game but I still wouldn't compare him to Brett Lovett. Yet!

In some game soon, he will get beaten by his direct opponent for the first time, and (hopefully not) the Dees will lose one with him playing. These two things will be the making of him. Once he faces difficulty and emerges the other side, I see him as a 200+  gamer. His poise is so stabilising, and after watching 2 decades of a squad with poor disposal, it is pure joy to see him kicking so well, so easily, so often.

The Brett Lovett comparison is interesting. Along with Gary Hardeman, Brett Lovett is the next best Dees defender I have seen. Bowey has a fair way to go to get into this rare air, but his kicking and reliability does remind of Lovett. And that is VERY pleasing.

Thanks for this gerat summary of Bowey.

I would argue that I have confidence in how he will handle 'difficulties' given his GF performance in absolute heat of the 3rd quarter - i.e.pass to Gus for the goal for such a young player.

Jason Taylor saw him as having the best decision-making qualities in his draft and was one reason we selected him. I'm not sure when he will find a stressful situation he can't handle. (although it will happen sometime)

My view on Bowey is just how lucky he, and the Dees, are that he will grow to maturity in the leadership and company of slightly older champions in Lever and Salem. (same goes for Rivers).

So was thinking of this kid after another great performance on Sunday night.
What does the future hold for Bowey?  He may continue to hone his craft and become a champion HB flanker, but is there a role where his attributes can be further beneficial to the team?

Clearly he won’t become a KP player, but does he get a chance to run through the midfield / wing? And perhaps add further weaponary to deliver ball inside 50. He needs to add size and build further fitness but he is super smart footballer and having him learn the midfield craft maybe an ingenious move.

I really like Brayshaw in HB as a pinch hitter for Salem and he plays the role pretty good as well. So we could definitely cover for him. Happy if he stays as-is as well. Food for thought.

Viney and Lever are straight back in. Then, incredibly, we have to squeeze Salem in when he's right.

Three players are going to make way for them. Guarantee it won't be Bowey though. He's incredible.

Here's a bold call. It'll be a long, long time before we lose a game with both Bowey and Salem in the team. They are weapons of mass destruction!

Amazing to think last year when Tomlinson went down ( who was having an almost AA start to the year) we replaced him with Petty who made us better. Then when hunt went down, who was also having a great season, we bring in Bowey who made us virtually bullet proof. A golden era on all counts .

Wouldn’t surprise me if Bowey ends up on a wing. He just needs to build his endurance.
I am so impressed by his hardness considering he’s 12kg soaking wet.
I suppose when you’re next to May you would feel invincible.

Couldn't agree more, he has no problem backing into a pack and nothing fazes him at all when he has the ball in hand. Thought he had a ripping game on Sun night.

Not sure why I bothered, they never have a positive word for Melbourne

but I watched that football show on 9.

all they could talk about was Ginnevan and his blond hair and how good he was and the rising star.
just plain ignorant and self important. They cannot see that Bowey is by far the Rising star this year.
they are hopelessly biased and introspective.
Go Dees

jb is so irritating and annoying

he just fronts up every week and performs. makes everything look easy

clean handling, no mistakes, great disposal and decision making

ya gotta hate the guy.   he's got no right to be that good, so young and so short

It is hard to draw a comparison for Bowsa I can only think of Clarry who has come into the team and performed from day one it is rare company indeed. Given time I think that he could perform on any line but happy for him to stay in the back 7.!!!

3:59 left in the 3rd qtr Bowey (19yro, 176cm, 72kg) comes flashing in, takes Parker (26yro, 188cm, 80kg) front on, hoists him up and dumps him on his back. When it's his turn to go he really goes! One of my favorite moments in the game.

Perhaps someone with tech smarts could post it in this thread?

I actually don't want him to add too much size. I don't want him to lose his speed. Maybe like 3 more kg's maximum.

Still don’t understand how that wasn’t HTB. Didn’t seem to get a mention from the commentators.

Just sayin... If Bowser keeps this high standard up all year in 2022 he will be the NAB Rising Star and set another AFL / VFL record for a Club obtaining a NAB Rising Star two years in a row.   Watch this space.

Would be highly unusual for a back to back Premiership team to win two Rising Stars in a row

Just sayin....

I reckon the right people would have noticed that effort. Everything went right with that interaction and we move on.

Don't think so. I think he will stay on hbf as a distributor. IMO it suits his style of play and is most beneficial for us.

More chance of Hunt playing on a wing IMO.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
