Just amazed by Bowey’s game and continued linear improvement this season. Trying to think to who may be comparable to him in the past and dual Brownlow medalist Keith Grieg comes to mind. Silky smooth, composed, unflappable skilful half back flanker. Of more recent times Nathan Buckley comes to mind with similar refined and complete skill levels at  the start of his career.

Exactly George and even the centre bounces didn’t bounce high at all. Overall a below average performance by the umps and I am being very kind in my description.

If Weid puts in a good run of performances TMac might start to feel nervous, if we’re including the latter stages of last season Tom’s form has dropped significantly since his injury last season.

Gold Coast played well last night. They had a plan for us, avoiding the Langdon wing, creating marking contests, no easy marks to be had at all for us, hard at it around the ball, defensively solid although our delivery to our forwards was sloppy

Miller is A-grade, Chol was a handful, Rowell is tough as. With Rankine to come back in I reckon they’ll win a fair few games this year

We badly need Lever back in the team. We’re conceding too many inside 50 marks and scoring chances. With more composure the Suns could have been closer and made it a nervy last quarter. We will lose sooner rather than later if we meet an accurate opponent. We have to get Rick back in to marshal that defence

Bowey was exceptional. Other than 1 errant handball in midfield his disposal was flawless. He has that rare quality of always appearing to have plenty of time. Positions himself perfectly, reads the play so well.

Dogga is a beast. He’s now clunking marks that he was dropping last year. Sign him up now.

Kozzie never gives his opponents a second of peace. Always hunting and harrying. Took his 2 goals well. He’s going to have a monster game soon. It’s brewing

Trac was BOG. Played his typical brutish game

We got the win while playing without some key defenders. We’ll put the points in the bank and move on

P.S. Metricon is a lovely stadium. Pity none of the locals have any interest in heading along to see their team. Dees supporters outnumbered the Suns fans 60:40 I reckon.

Funny you should say that.  In pre-match warm ups Williams take 1 or 2 players and gives them 30m kicking practice in a 1 on 1 session with him in the middle of the ground.

Hunt was one of those last year and i reckon Williams would be working with him for sure.

He just kills attacking momentum as he did last night will ill-directed or executed passing.

No way could I figure out TMAc's role.

brwon and Fritshc with Maxy resting are the forward weapons now. I love Tom but gee I hope he can find some form and a role that works for the team.

Seems Tom has been off the boil since BBB settled back into the side, he's now the third wheel behind Fritsch and Brown whereas he was 2nd before that. It's as though he's unsure of what's expected or he's having difficulty filling that role.

Have to admit I've completely forgotten how a Victorian winter feels like after 20 years in central and North Queensland. The missus and I both took hoodies to the game. I cant even comprehend an overnight minimum under 20 at this time of year. And humidity? We were happy to be 1000km closer to the south pole for a change. It was quite cool for us.

Was nice to see a game for the first time in about 7 years though.

In all honesty EO I honestly am not sure, sort of throwing it out there to see what others think His form seemed to drop after BB came back in late in the year and started playing good footy. He still contests well but is not marking too often.

It could even be confidence, great in 2018 very ordinary 2019/2020, really good again up to and including Port Adelaide game last year and then much quieter since. Just can't work him out. I would have thought with BB and Fritsch getting more of the attention he should be able to get under the oppositions guard more often.

I get that @loges - I flip it on the head. He is there to help Bayley get under the guard, whilst being a strong mark himself. Although both are reliable kicks for goals, Tom just aint quite sticking the marks. In the previous post, I was going to write something analogous to Luke Jackson not sticking marks - but 'that' is only ever appropriate early in your career from a spectators/supporters perspective. Not for Tom though... BUT it's beyond that output.. it's halving contests, and his ability to run and run and run...not quick.. just [censored] consistently as tall bloke. Personally, I love Tom, but it's an unconventional love,  I'm 42 - and when I was in my teens - all my mates fantasied about Pamela Anderson, they had Baywatch posters on their wall...I fantasied about Waimea Bay...and Brooke Satchwell.

I dont get the knocks of tmac.

He played his role fine (ie the one you accurately describe) this week.

And in round one, he went back and played great.

I think people need to get their head around the need to look past the raw numbers and stats when assessing a player's form.

The focus should be on how they are performing their role. 

The same conversation happens on here about kossie.

It is no coincidence that when asked sbout syers his distractions mention was praising kossie's pressure. No mention of the goals.

Tom please get back to extending them dukes instead of trying to take marks close to your chest , also I have noticed he is focusing more of his surroundings and less on hitting the ball at pace . I don't think he is too far away though,  just needs to find that aggression and hit up hard leads .

I thought TMac hurt his back last year around time BBB came back in and also had a new baby. He struggled rest of year, but as mentioned did play a role, and enabled Fritsch & BBB to get free.

To see him just clunk one or two more marks a game will help change the perception.

He was asked about our trouble scoring in the last qrtr when we kicked 5 pts.  His response (paraphrasing):  "We didn't need to score to win the game. We had built up a lead that we needed to defend".

Good post and I don't really disagree with your comment on our defence and the need for Lever to come back.

But out of interest I had a look at the stat for scores conceded from inside 50s against.

The Dogs scored from 31% of their inside 50s, and Gold Coast 32%.

Those the two lowest rates in the 17 games played so far.

Next worst was North vs Hawthorn in Round 1 at 34%.

Yeah I love him too, I've posted previously I was lucky enough to sit next to him on the plane to Darwin 2019 and have followed him closely ever since, No one was happier than me when he returned to form last year. I still see his effort, finding it hard to understand his fluctuations in form.
