I don’t see them as contradictory.  The first post was to suggest that Gus was flushing out the best offer possible so he could take it back to Melbourne to match. Even Tim Watson had a crack at him in the opening of the poorly timed SEN interview, asking Angus to “tell us the Clubs you haven’t spoken to because it would save time.”  Most starting 18 players don’t do this, they ask their managers to “just get the deal done as I love the environment I’m in, the Club has been great to me etc etc. 

In the end, Angus brought a 6 year at $850 per year offer to the Club, which is certainly top dollar for a half back who is one severe concussion away from trouble, and significantly more than what the Dees would have budgeted for some time ago. Free Agents certainly get offered “over the odds” due to not having to cough up a draft pick. 

My win/win comment was based around the fact that Gus certainly won’t hit all the targets over 6 years, but he will certainly hit some, so who knows what he ends up forsaking. 

Perhaps, I was overly generous with my win/win comment, because you know what, the more I think about it, it’s a terrific deal for Angus. 

Has put a lot of time into his Studies, Golf and Podcasts as well. All round performer as well as being a champion player and human being.

This view makes more sense to me. Credit to him for not dragging it on to the end of the season. But it would appear some crafty work together with his manager, has ensured he is not going to be short of a dollar over the next 6 years. 
 

alternative way to look at it...

- angus meets oppo clubs
- agrees to mfc offer
- spins out media narrative that he's listening to offers; mfc media exposure with pos / neg op cost
- does an interview with his mate garry on sen; more mfc media exposure with pos / neg op cost
- announces new long-term mfc deal; even MORE mfc media exposure with pos op cost

I think we need to wait a few more weeks to see if this is true or not. With Harmes out it all could have just been a coincidence? Or we have shuffled the decks to play Brayshaw in the middle.

You’ve gotta keep him in the midfield now. That’s the best and most balanced our midfield as a whole has looked in a really long time and that’s with Oliver being tagged. 
 

viney was able to play like a mad man because gus knew when to hang just to the outside and cover him, it was a great two way midfield game. 

I didn’t think we lost much at half back either with rivers really stepping up and salem looking like some form is building 

If we needed any further proof that Angus is the one we needed to get signed up it was last night. I was smiling all night.

Interestingly, Gus was on a podcast (think it was Dyl Buckley's) where he said he suffered from an awful phobia of talking to people when he was younger. His dad used to put him in uncomfortable positions to make him have to talk to strangers (like purposefully give him the wrong change to buy a paper, ask a stranger the time, those sorts of things). Gus was pretty critical of the approach, even if it's clearly worked.

When he played in the midfield in 2018 with Viney, Trac and clarry, our losses tended to come when they were all ball chasing at contests and we got killed on the outside. The Pies have probably exploited this tactic better against us than any other team. I think the last couple of years on the wing and in defence will make Gus a better midfielder. Great timing for the test coming this week - as I reckon this will be something cats will also try to exploit.

I hated the idea of moving Gus out of the backline, but it was a win/win last night. Our midfield definitely worked better, and Rivers and Salem were more assertive. It was Riv's best game for the year, and Salem looked closer to his best.

Excellent comment, was looking for this today, the JB 'bees to a honeypot' comment, was very pleased to notice Gus held his width on a couple of occasions to our advantage in play, was chuffed.

He played very well.

Gussy boy is an elite two way mid, and Petracca needs to rotate between mid and forward to help our scoring. best game both have played for a while

 

Anyone got a reliable idea of what his contract amount is?

It was reported that he discussed/negotiated how MFC was going to use him?  If so, what is his dream position?

Seeing him in the midfield vs Freo was a joy to behold, would love to see him stay but I suspect Harmes is a favourite of Goody's and Gus has had an outstanding year is defence. 

I'm not going to lie, part of me was worried he would leave, but he's invested in the club. Ultimate club man.

According to Goodys presser it seems like they're going to leave him in the midfield for the rest of the year.

Harmes too good for Casey.

I have to admit that Gus is one of my favourite players (ala TMac). Consequently I tend to zero in when he comes into play. He has learnt or been put in the position to be adaptable.

e.g when he first started he was played on the HFF and Paul Roos made the comment that Gus would not be playing there forever as he was still learning the game. His "year in the sun year" proved how good he was. The concussion issue proved how good he needed to be  i.e. change technique (and put your bum into where your head was going !!).

Then he becomes the inaugural president of the "wingmans" club . Premiership !!!! This even meant being the defensive winger and away from the limelight , but cometh the hour i.e. Finals showed how well he reads the game and contributes.

This year he has been flexible and is really one (if not in top couple) HBF in the AFL based on his ability to read the play. "Flexibilitywise" he melds into the middle last week like he had never left it. But as other posters have said this time around he is not playing as the ball magnet, but the fix it bloke !!!

Why would MFC let a player  (on & off the field ) like this leave !!!
