Really great to see Jack Viney taking the premiership cup to Todd.  Love Todd’s reaction. Go Dees 🏆❤️💙

Any chance you could link this? I haven't seen it anywhere.

Thanks in advance.

Not true. Nathan Ablett was a much better footballer pre AFL than Ablett jnr.

He got there on merit and played well in Geelong's premiership.

Always had more talent, just didn’t have the temperament.
Didn’t want it. Not didn’t want it enough, just didn’t want it at all. Wanted to play footy with mates without all the fuss & without tolerance for all the commitments that come along with it or the dedication required.

Wasn’t Ron Barassi the first father son pick?

Red Fox says that VFL rules were set up to allow Melboyrne to recruit RDB due to father connection.

I got this information from Wikipedia, so make of it what you will.

The father–son rule was established during the 1949 season, allowing a player to be recruited by the club his father had played for, despite being residentially zoned to another club. The first player officially cleared under the father–son rule was Harvey Dunn Jr, who was recruited to his father's old club, Carlton, in 1951, instead of being zoned to North Melbourne.[1]

The original rule is thought to have originally come into place as a result of successful lobbying by the Melbourne Football Club,[citation needed] which had wanted the young Ron Barassi to follow in the footsteps of his father, Ron Barassi Sr., who had been killed during World War II. Barassi was officially cleared to Melbourne under the rule in 1953.[1]

Noah Yze is around 15 years of age. He’s 2 - 3 years away from draft age.

Let’s not forget however, that not every child of an AFL star is necessarily the “son of a gun”.

Actually, they are (unless they are girls). They just might not be the football prodigy that we might have hoped for.

Tiernan Stynes is still a couple of years away. However, he was also regarded very highly in basketball ranks and made a state junior representative side a little while ago,

Tiernan Stynes has just been selected in the Victorian Under 18 Basketball team for this year’s Australian championships. The pendulum seems to be swinging in favour of the sport of basketball.

Nice of the basketball system to hone his spatial and situational awareness for us before he makes the switch to Aussie Rules.

The fact is that good players in both AFL and NBL, make more money playing football in the AFL than Basketballers in the NBL.

If your goal is to represent your country then basketball is the way to go, if you are good enough to play in the NBA then go for it.

The point is that a person’s choice of sport is not necessarily dependent upon how much money they make from their participation. It could be as simple as the enjoyment of the game or an individual not wishing to live in the shadows of their parents achievements.

The fact is professional sports people always play a sport they are good at and try to make as much money as they can so when they retire they have a reputation which will open other doors in their life after retirement.

If you want to be an amature then thats ok, provided you have a good job with income to live off or your parents want to support you.

I was an athletics official and work at the MFC as a trainer so I have seen both sides of the sports.

In the end we work to make money to make our lives better, if your sport is your work then guess what.

If not for Scott Pendlebury, Patty may have been an AFL player. Pendlebury quit the AIS basketball program, and Patty was offered that scholarship.

I agree durango. The path for Australian basketballers is through the American college system. Many get offered scholarships, but only the select few make it to the NBA. Josh Giddey is one the exception. He made it via the NBL. Those that don't make it to the NBA, very few get offered European contracts, and the rest are fighting for NBL contracts.

The NBL has slashed player contracts due to Covid disruptions. A rookie listed player in the AFL would be in the top 5% paid players in the NBL. A development player in the NBL (rookie equivalent) earns only $17,000 pa. So it's not surprising that many switch codes.

Surprised there has been no mention of this yet. This article was posted last week which talks about the Casey Academy Match against St Kilda few weeks back.

In this game we had father son prospects playing such as Kalani White (Jeff White), Kynan Brown (Nathan Brown), and Charlie Newport (Stephen Newport).

Melbourne Academy | Highlights aplenty for young Demons

I know for a fact Kynan Brown is going through the Oakleigh Chargers program and should play some games this year.

Does anyone know much about Charlie Newport?
