Agree but I did like the 1:30pm starts in the winter sunshine with half a stand to myself

O well... progress

Me too actually.

Not a huge fan of night games. Hard to get a park around the G!

And public transport is a touch more feral at 11:30pm on a Friday night than Sunday lunchtime

I cant see them getting too many night time games.  The retirement village locks the doors 8.00pm sharp.

They have to. OH&S issue. Can't have geriatrics mixing it up with professional footballers too much.

Why would Collingwood playing Carlton in round 2 last year mean we're likely to play them in round 2 next year? Even if we did it would probably be their home game if we play Footscray at home in round 1 so we'd gain nothing from the gate takings.

Its the same situation as last year, when Collingwood played Dogs on Friday night. So we don't play a team off a 5 day break so early in the year, I presume. We'll get 6 and they get 7. Can't play Tigers as we play them round 6.

Other option is dogs play them, but we are due more prime time games.

I think the clubs fortunes will now accelerate due to increased members, attendances and sponsorships but the must never forget the members who stood by the club through the period from 1964 to 2021.

That we, as members, did. Not even after losing to the Filth too many times against all rhyme and reason, and more recently, Trump's plea for us all to ingest bleach, did we lose the red'nblue in our blood.

Hi Mickey. Oh, I get it now. It's specifically if we were to play on the following Thursday night as Carlton will be the only side with the required minimum break between games. My brain has already started winding down before the weekend.

Would love to see more Saturday afternoon or Twilight games, particularly for those with young families.

No doubt but it won’t matter as the AFL hasn’t reduced the length of the quarter to 15mins so the [censored] cats will run out of steam again with their geriatric list.
Can’t wait.

GOD I HATE geelong.

i think we were generously reward 2nd half of last year as well. We played most of our games at night from memory.

Still think we should get the privilege to kick start the season.

I think we were rightly rewarded for playing exciting footy.

Jeez the days of easily getting a drink at the bar are long gone...

Can you please explain Mordor? Haven't heard it before.

I'm with you and wondered what's all the fuss about Mordor and what does it relate to and which team? Obviously I'm not a Tolkien fan.

Courtesy of Wikipedia  "...In J. R. R. Tolkien's fictional world of Middle-earth, Mordor (pronounced [ˈmɔrdɔr]; from Sindarin Black Land and Quenya Land of Shadow) is the realm and base of the evil Sauron..."

This could be anywhere really - The hangar, Holden centre, Blundstone,  Waverley, ....

But Kardinia Park sits nicely, especially on game-day at the ground if your a Dees fan.

The whole land of Mordor is a dark territory and at its heart is the evil genius that is controlling everything.

Thus there is one reason why the descriptor doe not apply to Geelong

Mordor came after 186.

One does not simply go into Mordor and win. Not with 10,000 men could you do this; it is folly.

But after 2021:

Not good money spinners or ratings for the  best team in the Land

our days of 20,000 at the G at  home games are past and families should embrace the new time slots and money that  the Dees will deserve on the big stage,

Friday night Games finish at about 10.20pm in Melbourne what's this 11.30 pm nonsense

Do you have a very slow walk to the car or station???

FGS ODee embrace our success and move with the times

If ever the Dees are going to get back as a Big Club power like  in the 50and 60,s With no money problems then it is NOW.

Lets take the advantages and privileges given to Top teams and never be downtrodden again!!

By all means go to Casey but really it's a relaxing trip without any stress.

FOr MFC membership the greatness of our Club is at the G on the  BIG stage agsin . Playing blockbusters with our stars lighting up the ground we call our own and have hardly see these champions play at for over 2 years.

Can't believe they're persisting with this godawful matchup to start the season, year after year. When was the last time these two teams had a close match? When was the last time both were even contenders in the same year?

Compare that to proven rivalries like Geelong v Hawks, which have yielded some cracking matches regardless of ladder position.

The season should start on a Friday and the first game should always be the Grand Final rematch. Have a Friday double-header if you want to make an event of it, but this Thursday matchup is a proven dud.

Why do they get 80,000 plus to a dud?

I think you missed the point. I am frustrated with channel 7 and all their adverts. Drives me nuts. Another reason  why I prefer going to the ground.

Night games are great for sponsorship and keeping the focus on us, but for our family supporters I'd like to see a good blend of afternoon games as well. I don't want to be like Hawthorn/Geelong/Sydney of the early 2010s who seemingly played every single week at night. I'd like a few Saturday or even Sunday afternoons at the G, ideally. But obviously we deserve and will want night games on FTA at the start of the year.

I reckon it's 100% certain.

The AFL will want the reprise of the Round 23 classic, given how impactful the goal after the siren was to our flag.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
