Some things are private.

It's OK if there are private reasons to account for some of this. Some people have hinted that they know what they are.  To mollify those who are annoyed Jackon didn't go earlier, could those people in the know say if these private reasons only arose this year?

Freo already have 2 F2nds don't they - their own and North's - so this doesn't affect the Jackson trade because they can already offer a F1st + F2nd.

Maybe it's now going to be 13, F 1st and North F 2nd and we give them the Bedford pick 43.

That's unders for LJ, but that North F 2nd always has trade appeal on draft night.

However that would leave us with only one pick inside 54, once Pies get 27, unless I am missing something.

Unless as GWS have #3, #12, #15, #18, #19, #44, #61, #63. and will trade Hopper for Soldo and lets say Tiger's 31 pick and GWS who then won't need 31, can give us picks they probably won't use in 31 and 43 for Bedford.

That at least would give us 2 x F1 and 2 x F2 for next year's draft. That would be good for next year.

We're gonna get reamed by Freo here

That deal is not good enough. We need access to elite talent and dont want more picks that are diluted. I say we cannot accept anything where the best pick is 13 (which will as always be about pick 15,16 in reality). Freo and Dees knew they had no high picks weeks ago so how was this not sorted out? what a charade. Freo are taking trhe absolute [censored].

Force their hand dees and dont accept 3 lower picks. we ned players with X factor and 2019 we rolled the dice on Jackson and Pickett and won a premiership 2 years later. We need access again to those type of players.

Exceptional reporting from Tom. Freo are going to offer something different to exactly what we want but he doesn’t know what it is. Great stuff.

If Freo give us 13, a future 1st and a nice swap of a good second for a future 3rd or similar we’ll probably do that and then go to market for our top 10 pick.

Ideally  we get it all done in one go hit but it seems on brand that we’d accept a decent deal and go do our own work.

Figured it was more related to port and jhf

The most positive thing about those comments are they are Tom Browne's.

Bloke has no idea..

We're getting screwed here. If pick 13 (which in reality will be closer to 15 or 16 after bids) is the best we get for a 20 year proven pick 3, then we've lost out big time. Anything less than a top 5 pick is a loss. Anything outside top 10 pick is a disaster IMO. Points are irrelevant and two lower picks don't equal a higher pick. We're losing elite talent, we need to replace it with elite talent. Blah blah back your recruiters etc. We shouldn't have to. We should get our pick of anyone in the draft, not watered down less talented left overs.

What happened to getting at least one top 10 pick that Tim Lamb publicly spouted the other day? Looks like we bent over unfortunately.

It's just not possible. Fremantle is not going to bend over backwards to get a top 10 pick for a guy who's ooc and they can realistically get for two firsts.

We're gonna get screwed over badly

Yep.

Unfortunately it's looking like we've potentially caved here.

Lets see what is the outcome.  I think the whole process is stuffed. All this prodding by the media is empty tosh.

Nope

caved? and what were our choices, pray tell? screwed yes. lack of good faith by freo, yes

Why don’t we go to WC and ask for their best offer, surely they can do better than 13 & future first

Reckon we might have done that already mate.

What hasn't helped matters is the year that LJ had this season.  Apart from 2 or 3 standout games he's been non influential ... and that has to lower his value in a trade

They (Freo) might be paying Jackson some really good future coin but do they want to pay lots again just to acquire the player?

It's a double investment

Doesn't look like we're going to get much more than what was originally offered so if they've gone a bit luke-warm, it's understandable

Reverse the trade and many here may not want to pay that much to get him or even want him at all (aside from the large salary and long term deal)

The potential acquirement of Grundy is a good example.  A number here (myself included) are trusting the club's judgement ... despite a few doubts (that's reading between the lines)

There is a truckload of 'potential' attached to the Jackdon deal and I'm beginning to side with those who would take the deal and run

What I’d accept:

13
Future first
Future second (Freo)
Future 3rd (North)

Jackson
Future 3rd (Melb)

Not ideal but then we trade 13 OR our future first AND Freo’s future 2nd + North future 3rd round pick for something 7-10.

End up with what we want.

Tom Browne: there has been progress in the trade

Also Browne: Melbourne asked for a f2 and freo said no.

Huge progress.

People don't realise the significance of a contending side potentially having two first rounders (one being ours already) and two second rounders in what is considered to be a super draft.. Plus, pick 13 for this year.

I no longer care about the immediate gains from losing Jackson. The club would be licking its lips at the prospect of what we could do at the draft next year. I don't think supporters know how strong it is.

Jackson is potential atm. Not a known quantity, we were never going to receive what many thought we would.

It's all about next year's draft haul imo if the deal that is being spoken about comes to fruition.

Every Year next year’s draft is always the stronger one, without fail

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
