Every Year next year’s draft is always the stronger one, without fail

Yep, footy fans have short memories

"The umpiring has never been this bad" gets said every year too

Pies supporters ... "We will the flag this year' They say it every year, without fail

Next year's draft consists of year 10 & year 11 school age youth viewed months and months ago

How could anyone possibly know?  It's just crystal ball gazing said with a voice of authority

Fair to say we will all be cheering Freo for the spoon next season 🙄

People don't realise the significance of a contending side potentially having two first rounders (one being ours already) and two second rounders in what is considered to be a super draft.. Plus, pick 13 for this year.

I no longer care about the immediate gains from losing Jackson. The club would be licking its lips at the prospect of what we could do at the draft next year. I don't think supporters know how strong it is.

Jackson is potential atm. Not a known quantity, we were never going to receive what many thought we would.

It's all about next year's draft haul imo if the deal that is being spoken about comes to fruition.

2018 super draft:

Incredible top 10 (that we traded out of).

Butters (we tried), Quaynor 12, 13.

Not sure there’s a definitively better player than Tom Sparrow outside the top 14. Rowbottom and maybe Clark I guess, then daylight.

Whats my point: don’t be surprised if we trade up in to this year and go the bird in hand rather than 2 in next year. With no guarantee they’ll be right at the top or that anyone would trade back it doesn’t really help us.

I believe recruiters when they say there’s special talent at the top of a future draft. I’m not convinced they can accurately project depth a year out. The talent it takes to get on a recruiters radar vs what it takes to get drafted are very different things. A lot of quality bottom agers don’t step up

We used pick 6 (which we acquired for Hogan) in the 2018 draft for Steven May

Also, we traded our first round pick of that season (2018) for Jake Lever in a trade with Adelaide in 2017

Without both players - no flag

If the deal is 13, F1 and F2 (north) I think we do that deal.

Every chance we package 13 and 20 for a top 10 pick

Would Jackson care if the Dees receive pick 13 and a future first rounder from Freo for his services. OR would Jackson feel that his value is far less than what it is really is. If West Coast trade their 2nd rounder then they would be out of the trade deal . Perhaps Jackson could put pressure on Freo (via Bell)  by telling them if you want my services you have to ......... Jackson doesn't want to go into the footy trade pool. Perhaps he may consider staying.

What an insult from Fremantle!

They need to give us a fair deal.

I certainly would ask West Coast what their best offer would be.

We've already asked wce. They haven't even made an offer.  And it doesn't matter what their best offer is bc LJ doesn't seem to want to go there.

Yes that’s my point. We didn’t prioritise the super draft.

If we get a chance to draft a top player this year I doubt JT and co will be worrying about who’s coming next year.

His manager will be doing all the correspondence.  LJ just has to sit back and wait ... it's out of his hands

It's club vs club and LJ is the meat in the sandwich.  If you lay down your tools just a fraction, the equation changes

Put another way, if LJ had progressed further from his GF exploits, Freo may well have satisfied our needs by now with a better offer

Looks like no top 10 pick for us.

The trade mentioned is sounding pretty realistic. 13, Freo F1st & Nth F2nd, with something going back their way (late 2nd/3rd?)

What LJ can do, is have a tour of the WC facilities (They are very nice) to get Freo moving some more.

What Jackson can do is [censored] Freo and sign the dotted line with us

Good point but your opening line made it look like we'd made an error in trading out of the top 10 (and first round) ... I just thought I'd fill in the details, DS

And I'm not sure about our club's attitude to next season's draft. You may be right

Conventional thinking often gets followed but it has to be said that Taylor has definitely got the midas touch with 1st and 2nd round picks (either with their use in the draft, or trading)

As for 3rd & 4th rounders ... meh.  Why waste time and money betting on 20-1 shots? Because that's what it is - a bet

10 years ago Malthouse said that each new draftee costs a club at least $200k per season (minimum 2 years) ... that figure would be closer to $275k these days

That's a lot of money for a below average 18yo

Spending that amount of money on a 3rd or 4th rounder is just not a good percentage play

If we get pick 13, 13 (F1) and 20 (NthF2) its not a bad deal.

package 2022 pick 13 and 20 (F2) for pick 7-8

ends up being 7 and 13 which is OK

Who is doing the “urging”- Fremantle or the reporters?

Sounds like Freo realising that the big baby wants to go home and doesn't care about who drafted him means they hold the whip hand so why not take ever advantage possible.

Any Club would do that .

The only dog in the manger here is the player.

The upside for the Dee's is his immaturity and self interest may mean he will never maximise his undoubted talent no matter who he plays for

You realise the irony in this statement, right? You're literally talking about an unknown quantity next year too. Jackson has seen some of his potential unlocked. Next year's draft crop are still in Year 11.

And every year people say the same thing. "Oh, next year is meant to be much stronger".

I don't think the club will be licking its lips at the prospects of late first rounders for a player we paid pick 3 for.

The club may however have to take its medicine and move on.

They have more and will get even more, trading Lobb after the LJ deal is done, so we can't ask for anything else.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
