I think we’ve been very unlucky with how this has played out as a club. In normal situations he’s back and forth whenever he can, and he’s living in Melbourne experiencing a new place and all the great cultural things it offers. His family is visiting 5-6 times a year and seeing their son play at The G in front of 50,000 people as a guest of the club.

Instead he was living though horrific lockdowns and seeing his mates at home go to the beach, and talk [censored] about Victoria. WA lived virtually untouched by the pandemic for 2 years. I honestly think this is a huge factor in his thinking, and the pressure he’d be getting from his family and friends.

Let’s not forget that the pandemic has constituted 50% of Luke’s entire adult life.

It also resulted in him living In WA from early September when we went across before the prelim all way until the new year.  I’m guessing it was about 4 months in WA.

In a normal year he might’ve had a quick pit stop home in early October, gone overseas for a few weeks after that as footballers generally do, back to Melbourne for Nov/Dec preseason and then really only home for 2 weeks or so at Xmas.

Is it WA or Freo ? We are lulled into thinking it’s Freo or bust. Last I checked there are two clubs in WA, both fulfill the go home factor.

If I was Tim Lamb, I’m picking up the phone to the Eagles everyday telling him how good LJ is and that we’d take their 1st pick and some steak knives (be it a player or their 2nd rounder as well).

What was the Tim Kelly deal?  Throwing all in to get one player has set them back considerably.

9 first rd picks 🤣🤣

Players pick their team not the state.

And he replied?! Replied to a supporter from an opposition club poking him on a deal he just did?

Yes. I just wanted to let him know what a good player they had snared in Hogan. His email is [email protected]

You can email anyone in the league using the same formula. Roosy emailed me too when he was coach of Melbourne.

The same for me, my whole family is back in Mexico. I just came back from seeing my family last month, how good is that!!

Stoked for you! In September I'll get to see my family for first time in 4 years. That's a decent contract's worth of time, Jacko

Really happy for you, AmDam. Four years between visits is so long. Enjoy the precious time with your family. 💕

Rubbish, disloyalty to Norm Smith a major factor!

Sounds like a dream to me, All my family live in Victoria… I try and avoid them 😂

But seriously, enjoy that.

Tom Papley picked Carlton, last I looked he is still in Sydney at the Swans!

If Lobb joins GWS they may give up a reasonable pick to Freo to secure him, particularly if GWS lose Taranto or Hopper.

That could work in a Three way trade.

Yeah but it’s clubs that release them from their contracts.

AS far as I’m concerned he says he wants to be closer to family and the Eagles can also make that possible. They have a better draft hand so id put that to Peter Bell  and say come to us with something palatable or don’t waste our time.

Worst case is LJ signs with us for another 2. He still won’t become a RFA or FA at the end of that, so we can happily do the same again.

A three way may be just the thing to keep him here.

To be fair, we approached Adam Cerra last year despite the fact we didn't have much to offer Freo.

And Cerra ended up nominating Carlton - the equivalent here is Jackson telling Freo he's nominating the Eagles.

Papley was still contracted.

I don't begrudge LJ wanting to move for money (and to go home) but at the same time we don't want to lose him.  There's a decent chance he will blossom into a star (has all the attributes)

But I expect the club to play hard ball especially if his future salary elsewhere is in the top bracket

Paying big money = quite a sizeable trade value

We have a recruiter with the midas touch but even so, drafting is flawed and you don't always get what you want.  Busts happen as a matter of course despite all the good intentions

I'd want 3 picks inside the top 20

Something like picks 5, 10 & 18.  That should just about do it unless there is some established talent attached to a trade

So can Freo come up with the goods?  With some creative & exhaustive trading they can but both clubs (Demons & Freo) might already know how it's all going to work out

People can say what they like, however he’s going to be a star . We need to hold firm and play hard.

For mine we’re giving one of our best up and comers to a premiership rival . But he’s also a tall and we all know how hard they are to find and the value they hold. My price is Hayden Young and a first rounder.

Hold firm on this and we will get it. We have a player greatful  to the club who doesn’t want us to lose out, and will sign short term if the deal isn’t right. We actually really hold the upper hand

When faced with a loss it's natural for many here to mark down his ability & potential

But we saw a real glimpse of his ability against the Lions ... suddenly he was the main man which eventuated in 22 disposals, 9 tackles and 18 hit outs.  I'm sure Freo were watching too

Agree with your post, PSD

why any Melb supporter would facepalm this is beyond me.

It sounds like Freo are approaching multiple players though, which is different from just approaching Jackson or us just approaching Cerra.

I hope he stays but not at any price.

Its looking like the CBA will not return a massive cap increase as the new TV rights deal has been hit by the recent economic headwinds. The irony is that the WA clubs are insisting their games be broadcast free to air which will lower the upper end of the deal and thus limit the CBA increase.

Mega deals sometimes work out but they do impact on your options. Just because he will be an excellent player and they can get him on the coming home factor doesn't mean its a good move by Freo. Likewise there must be a point at which no matter how good he is we can't mortgage the future just to keep him. I think we have just sent a message to our whole team that we place team first.

Looking at the player of the year votes to the right of the screen 31 votes must cause some pause on the big dollars despite his obvious potential. He could have the impact of a Max but probably never the impact in games of a Trac or Clarry.

Except Cameron was a lot older than LJ when he was traded ... so there's length of service at the new club to be factored in.  And that's quite significant

But the thrust of your argument is quite sound, Colm

I'd be wanting more back even though LJ is not in the same bracket as Cameron (yet)

A 6 year deal elsewhere for LJ would take him to age 26/27 ... so if he turns up trumps he's got (potentially) another 6 or 7 years after that contract

If LJ gets to B+ status or better elsewhere, that effectively means he plays elsewhere at that level for 13 or 14 years.  Players play longer these days

That's got to be worth a good deal for us coming back our way, all things considered

We need to be acting like real estate agents ... get the maximum return!

(That is of course if LJ is on the move ... a stalemate looming is another outcome)

Your probably right in terms of Jackson being worth a bit more than Cameron. Cameron was a proven key forward and had won the Coleman, but Jackson has a rising star and a premiership. It’s also hard for Freo to argue that Jackson is still unproven  when they are offering him such a big contract.
The only problem with that is apart from the maybe a player like Meek being included in the deal it hard to see what more Freo would be able to give us.
Also GWS matched the offer for Cameron. I don’t think we will match the offer Jackson.
At this stage I’d be happy to get 3 first round picks even if none of them were inside 10. I would be even happier if Freo doesn’t win another game this season  and their draft selection gets better.

Thats great!  I'm seeing my family for the first time in about that long too, also in September.

I leave just after the first final, so I'm praying to the footy gods that we either get a home game or are playing another VIC side.

The facepalm was for 2 reasons. Firstly, Jackson isn't worth Hayden Young and a first rounder, and Freo aren't trading away their guns who are locked in long term. Do you think we'll play some stupid game of putting in ambit claims? Our recent list management has always been about getting deals done, and moving on so that other deals can be brokered.

Secondly, as I replied, there is no evidence that Jackson will re-sign for 2 years if we don't get what we want. Our best case scenario is that Jackson's management have told Freo that the Dees have been respectful to Jackson, and fair compensation is warranted.

Two 1st rounders (both in the teens + steak knives) or a 1st round pick in the top 10 and a 2nd rd pick + steak knives.

I've never known a club that's lost an uncontracted player that's "held the upper hand" in trade negotiations.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
