Agreed. I’d move pick 47 out to a club like the Hawks for a future 2022 3rd rounder.

    Something that seems to be going under the radar, in the media at least, is the incredible situation Collingwood finds itself in where they traded away  this years 1st rounder.

    From afl.com re North Melbourne firming on Horne-Francis for their first pick.

    "...rivals now believing they are more unlikely to place a bid on Collingwood father-son Nick Daicos."

    So in affect, Collingwood could have had Finn Callaghan (or other) and Daicos but their poor year means they will now miss out on an extra top 3 pick. Then there is the trading away of multiple picks just to get points to match for the one player. 

    Glad our club is far better run.

    Apparently Crows offered pick 4 and two future 1st rounders for pick 1 and were told no. Bafoonery at its greatest, Crows are bottom 4 for a few more years yet.

    They had to shoot their shot for Horne-Francis. Wonder if North gave it any thought.

    clubs are finding it tough enough as it is to pay whats already on their lists with many clubs taking across the board pay cuts and pushing money around to other years making it near on impossible to go shopping for big money signings like we're used to seeing, cheers covid

    Fremantle have one of the worst trading records and continue with Peter Bell airing negotiations through the media, couldn't stand Bell as a player and dislike him even more as a list manager

    be interesting to see what the lions do in the next few days and in the month between now and the draft. currently rolling with picks 14, 18, 50, 54, 60, 76, 90 but only have 2 OOC senior listed players and two retirees off the rookie list, so presuably theyll delist those two boys and re-rookie them and then try and trade up to a 3rd first rounder? or shuffle a bunch of stuff back a year -almost feels like everyone wants out of this draft after the first round/is happy with all the 1-4 year players they've been developing under their eyes instead of gambling at the draft

    The concern is if he wants to go home in 2 years. This was meant to be a super draft year, they could package up the future first rounders and try and get something.

    This will bookmarked for years to come.

    It’s more this is how big the drop off is after the top 2. If we had 1 and were offered 3 and 4 id still want us to say no. Yes, he is that good.

    Ive seen Jason Horne live and I would not take that trade either. I honestly believe he is the best talent from SA since Matthew Pavlich (possibly better). 

    The Crows effectively offered Picks 4, 6 and 18 for 1 and 25.

    I’m not doubting that, I’m doubting Norf’s ability to retain him. I thought they overlooked Logan McDonald last draft for the same reason.

    I used to think that Trade Week and the Draft were our Grand Final - the highlight of the year.
    I feel the same as you @La Dee-vina Comedia.

    Thankfully, the Tigers and the Kangaroos saved the day by finally came to agreement over the Robbie Tarrant/Callum Coleman-Jones which I see as a win for North Melbourne. I can see them improving next year. 

    And that’s it for the week. The doors to the trade week are now officially closed for the weekend but there’s sure to be activity going on in the back rooms. 

    Also, the opportunity for unrestricted free agents to move to a club of their choice closed on Friday, with several players remaining unsigned and with their futures in the balance.

    14. Robbie Tarrant and a future second-round pick from North Melbourne and a third-round selection (currently No. 40 overall) at this year’s draft will go to Richmond. 

    Callum Coleman-Jones, two third-round selections (currently No. 42 and No. 47 overall) and Richmond’s future fourth-round selection will go to North Melbourne.

    My older brother is a Hawks fan so I'm enjoying their attempts to offload late career mids/fwds with large contracts into a market in which Hawks over rate their draft pick value, and which generally has limited salary cap liquidity.

    You can see the urgency. Having squandered 1st rounders on O'Meara and Wingard they then started rebuild with half back flankers/key position players. Mitchell knows that recent history is that to win a flag you need access  to elite explosive bigbodied midfield talent normally taken in top 5, and then it takes 6 or 7 seasons for those players to reach their peak. And Sammy is impatient. And likely a bit angry at Clarko. 

    Can they find an Alan Bond and use the cap space luckily created by retirements of Patton & Scully unwinding 2 bad contracts to absorb most of contract to essentially buy a draft pick.

    Port a chance for a mid as Hinkley needs a flag but their interests best served by adding to their young talent to add to their list build. But Hinkley is desperate. (16)

    Tigers a chance for mid or Gunston. (Tight Cap) (7, 15, 26)

     Freo a chance for a mid but should 28/29 yo + B grade mids  be a priority for their early picks? (6,8,19,22)

    Giants obvious choice is Gunston after a searching medical to check his back injury but what draft capital would you give up for a 30 year old coming off a season missed with a back injury? Tight cap. (2CFCLOL, 13,....)

    last minute deals for O’Meara likely I’d say. Clubs will wait until the hawks are more desperate

    Hard to put a value on him....Was Best and Fairest 2020, missed 2021....You would really want to know that he is on top of his back issues and would be able to play to a high level still.  Have a feeling Hawthorn would want a 1st rounder for him on past deeds.

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos.     • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
