Woodville-West Torrens thrashed Glenelg in today’s SANFL Grand Final and one of its stars was Jimmy Toumpas, still just 27 years of age.

The win comes ten years after Toumpas played in his first premiership for the Eagles in 2011 in just his 5th game at senior level. He was a star in the following season for SA in the Under 18 championships earning him a number 4 selection by the Demons in the 2012 draft.

We know the rest. Toumpas never lived up to his potential after undergoing major hip surgery before his career began. He ended up at Port Adelaide after 27 games with the Demons and managed 10 more with the Power.

Congratulations go to Jimmy!!!

Billy Stretch played for Glenelg today as well, gees the Bays were putrid. Waste of a season.

Good on you Jimmy, really happy he’s still playing and got a flag. The whole Toumpas bashing been done to death, not his fault we drafted him ahead of Ooowwwiines (3 votes).

Congratulations Jimmy. His form for SA in those 2012 Under 18 National Championships was simply outstanding. I think the hip surgery certainly didn’t help his career and perhaps if he came to the club in its present condition and was given time to learn and develop in the VFL, he might still be playing with us.

Sorry to disagree. I took one look at him in his in his first game warm up at the MCG and was shocked with our choice.. Had nothing going for him as a very early draft pick.

So, too late to rookie list him?

I've always had Toumpas in the 'tragedy' column, not the 'failure' column.

From the original phantom draft of 2012.

4. Melbourne - Jimmy Toumpas
Height: 182cm
Weight: 78kg
DOB: 12/01/94
Club: Woodville-West Torrens
Draft range: 2-5
The Demons snare Toumpas at pick four, despite the South Australian being touted a top-three prospect for most of the year. And they'll love him, too, with his class, poise and goalkicking skills excellent for a midfielder. He had an interrupted season with a niggling hip injury, which required surgery at the end of the year, but he'll be fine for the club's pre-season and for next year. Announced himself as a draft pick in this sort of range late last year, when he starred for SANFL side Woodville-West Torrens as they charged to the league premiership. Has excellent leadership qualities that were on show as captain of his state this season, and some already see him growing into an AFL captain.

In the mix: GWS. There's still a good chance Toumpas will go to the Giants as one of the first three picks. In any case, there's no way he'll get past the Bulldogs at five or six.

Sounds like the style of player we're lacking

He did actually have a good couple of 20+ possession 2 goal games in 2015 so he wasn't the complete disaster many people are making him out to be.

But in terms of the draft, he was taken way too high.

Pfft what a huge recruiting blunder he was!

I sometimes wonder if Jimmy looked like a star due to significant lack of quality in his draft year.

That first round had Jonathan O'Rourke at 2, Lachie Plowman (who just retired) at 3.  Both hardly exciting before Jimmy.

Then some other first rounders in Sam Mayes (8), Troy Menzel (11), Kristen Jaksch (12), Jesse Lonergan (13), Taylor Garner (15), Jackson Thurlow (16) and Josh Simpson (17).

Not meaning to sound disrespectful, but I have no idea who most of these players are.

Very poor draft year IMO.... other than a certain #7 who we snuck through as a F/S 🥰

I called it in his first contest in his first game in the Red and the Blue.

No. He was a disaster.

You have conveniently left out Wines, Stringer, Mcrae and Vlasutin in the top 10 along with Whitfield and Daniher who were not available.  Not our greatest draft effort.

On memory he was supposed to go before our pick and when not selected we jumped.  I guess those above already in the queue had worked it out.  We may have had Wines instead!

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
