So...what do we need to achieve during this trade & draft period?

I'm obviously a VERY happy Dees supporter - as we all are. No longer is my favourite part of the footy season the trade and draft period. However, we need to keep evolving as a footy team and a footy club. So, what do we need to achieve in this off season?

Hi Ernest yes I cannot think of anything else at present and don't want to.

A team needs 3 'new' players to keep going forward.  Obviously Hunt and Tomlinson come to mind.  Perhaps another tall?

Our drafting seems to be successful with picks under 40 so hopefully we can do some bundling to achieve that.

I'd argue our most urgent need is another key forward prospect.

I think I posted somewhere else that I'm quite pleased to see several respectable 'Hibberd' types on the draft projections between 15-25. I think moving up the board that far is a realistic goal and being able to secure a disciplined medium-sized defender is an opportunity we should grab.

That would likely leave us with only very late picks after that, and I can see them being used on a collection of tall kids with good attitudes who can be given a few years to develop. Some won't progress, some will. For the first time that I can recall, we have a brief moment of luxury where we can give them a little time to mature.

That all points to a pretty quiet trade period unless some bonus opportunity comes up.

Yep. Perfect time for us to pick up some tall prospects with later picks. We could use them too. A ruck and a KPF.

Taj Woewodin has come at a good time for us too as a versatile midfielder type.

Casey are going to be light on for inside midfielders too. Wouldn't be surprised if we picked one up.

Priority 1 is to ensure we have the cap space to retain our young core.

priority 2 is to look for opportunities to improve our on field mix.

the pursuit of Cerra i think is an indication we've got some wiggle room if the right opportunity arose.

Don't worry....I'm definitely enjoying the moment, but if you think Jason Taylor and his crew aren't already hard at work working on next year's list you are crazy!

We need to keep evolving and already have 6 list spots to fill.

I'd definitely like to see some young ruckmen & KPF's come onboard. Give them some time to develop like we did with Gawny.

Key forward.

Young, tall, skinny ruckman who will not be ready until 2024.

Our wings are such a vital part of our gameplan. Rosman and Baker look possible, but another aerobic gut runner would be nice.

I'm  intrigued as to how this works.  My understanding is that teams have to pay most of the salary cap.  So if we prepare a warchest for Cerra and miss out on him, do we say to other players "are you interested in being paid $X early to help us bring in a big fish / keep the list together in future years?"  Does that happen?

Sure it’s  about improving our list. That’s how we won the flag.

However, I just want to enjoy the moment. Where we have come from and what we have just done. We have GF highlights that will probably never be surpassed both from a team and individual end. How you can think about the draft , a week after our greatest triumph has me beat.

For me, this has been a week of enjoyment and reflection.

When you been waiting as long as I have and beginning to think you will never see another flag, this past week has been momentous.

I guess it’s just an age thing!

Lets enjoy the moment without looking to move on immediately seeking new stories and information that take away from the significance of what we have just witnessed.

I don't disagree.....we are probably in a similar age bracket as I also had reached the stage of thinking that I would never see another Melbourne Premiership.

Now, having tasted that sweet nectar again, all I want is another taste! I'm hooked!

If a Melbourne Dynasty is to happen one of the ingredients for that success will probably come from this batch of recruits.

So, whilst I'm definitely reliving this Grand Final by having the replay on high rotation, I'm also looking for another taste of that sweet nectar of ultimate success.

Let's enjoy this long awaited Premiership......but let's do it again!

Incorrect. We actually only have 3 list spots to fill at the moment. Don't forget Declase and Turner came onto the list as extras to replace long term injuries and Bradtke was a Category B rookie which is also an extra. So with his departure and 5 others, it only leaves us with 3 spots for now. For what it's worth though I expect at least 1 or 2 more spots to open up.

IMO, now that we missed out on Cerra we'll just look to improve our draft hand and go from there. I expect us to recruit Moniz-Wakefield and Woewodin and maybe another midfielder or forward/ruck depending on how many spots open up between now and the draft.

Whatever money we had for Cerra we can keep up our sleeves either for next off season or the Oliver and Jackson contracts. Only other recruiting for me would be someone like Reece Conca as a part time assistant who can play at Casey to help the young midfield there in the absence of Jones, Vandenberg and Jetta.

Mac Andrew ticks this box but at present may not have enough points to secure him.

Either way I would not be against trading our future first for a 1st Rounder this year, if there are any interested parties.

The rules have changed regarding the NGA players. If another club bids on Mac Andrew in the first 20 picks we are unable to match the bid.

Speculation is that he will be a top 10 pick.

So it won't matter if we have points to match or not.

Hopefully we get in on this action. Move some picks back to next year, given we don't have any pressing needs that need to be covered this year

I think this year is as good a year as any to have no first and only 3 mid range picks. We have no pressing need in any part of the ground. We have young elite talent as shown in Rising star nominations and the % of premiership team under 21. 2 years of fractured visibility of this years draftees and we have the best recruiter in the business to spot raw talent and now the development team and time to nurture it. Need to be mindful we may want use up to 2 of those on Woey Jnr and Moniz-Wakefield but suggest we will create a touch more room somehow. Being they are both flank/wing can see us going tall if the right prospect is there with any other  picks.

Wouldn't mind getting our hands on the pies future second, I'd trade all our picks (33 45 & 57, 1092pts) for their future 2nd and pick 48 (302pts). If they finish lower than 13th we're ahead and it should give them enough to get their stuff done. We use 48 and pick up Woey jr and AM_W cheap, maybe upgrade a rookie or two. We could end up with picks 18 and 19 next year to load up on kids with exposed form.😉

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
