The next two words were the important ones “ if needed”.

Yeah, fair enough.

I tend to get a bit jumpy when I see suggestions of Petty being moved around.

He could be a star defender. I say leave him there.

The best thing that could have happened to Schache was give him a run behind the ball to get him some easy pill and a bit of confidence up.  I often wonder why we have never given Sam some development as a defender.

Schache went ok in defence and someone like Liam Jones has found his niche back there so I see no reason why Sam couldn't become a roll player here.

It's clearly a tough gig getting the ball bombed on your head and continually getting out numbered as a forward.  Weitering tried up forward and looked ordinary, Moore has had his moments good and bad, Harris-Andrews gets lost up there.

So maybe going back and being one of those extra numbers would assist him.  Plus if he's not confident in the jukes he can just go the almighty fist.  I struggle to believe there are a lot of key defenders in the comp with more talent than Sam.

I'd like to see the club developing this side of his game as well.

I agree - I think when Thommo is back, he, Petty and Weid should all be thrown around a bit - surely playing at the other end of the ground helps develop their game and provides enormous flexibility if and when injuries occur.

The talk was that Sam was on fire prior to being injured in the pre-season - if you think of where TMac was this time last year or even ANB, Jordon, Sparrow etc he might be one preseason away from being a best 22 player.

Very happy he is likely to stay - hopefully he can reach his potential.

All the same, I'd be keen to draft a young key forward in the draft who can develop for a few years at Casey as insurance when Brown / TMac finish up.

I'm happy all our KPF's won't be 29+ years old.

We need someone coming through at least until we procure another.

Happy for him to have a crack in the backline if needed, but I just cant get past that final in 2018. To me it looked like being chock full of confidence rather than a coincidence or a one off.

No wonder North are shopping for a forward. How they let Bbb go boggles me.

Petty and Smith would be good options up forward.

oh, i can sort of understand it - they, justifiably given their ladder position, wanted larkey to be #1 option, which is what sideshow bob was always going to command by dint of the way he plays, as he's their 'future' going forward

cam zurhaar is their fritsh equivalent, they're getting callum coleman-jones as their jackson facsimile

That would be a brave move considering he has been a revelation as a tall defender this season.

So many key position players take years of hit and miss development before they hit their straps but Petty has been dynamite since his first half dozen or so games.

I like him exactly where he is. It's now up to Tommo to show where he fits into the team imo.

Yes, and Adam is versatile too. He can play on any line in the AFL. He can find a role in this team.

He should trim down a bit to save his knees and take Hibberd’s spot. Or he can compete on the wing or lead up forward.

Petty needs to cement himself back and as an AFL player. If he can take the pressure off May, it extends his life as a footy player and keeps that window open a little bit longer.

They have a young gun forward that they wanted to develop and he started to deliver late in the season

I like to think the rousing cheers he got when he and the boys did their post match laps at Optus infront of the demon army who were going mad applauding anyone in red and blue that moved changed his mind to stay.

I am a little surprised at this. I thought he would move on.

Credit to Sam for showing faith in the club and vice versa.

He has the talent. I hope the club can bring out his best.

I’m happy to hear this personally, if nothing else this is coverage for Brown and TMac who both aren’t getting any younger, and this gives Weid a chance to change the narrative on his story. Keeps our current forwards on their toes knowing there’s someone snapping at their heels.

Stoked he stayed! I know he hasn't taken his opportunities yet, but I really really do think he is worth persisting with.

He just needs confidence. Once he has 3-4 good games in a row, he'll never look back.

would have been a shame for him to kick on at another club

still has a battle on his hands to crack the 22 but good back up.

Hopefully he can do a Tmac

Yep

Someone gives him the confidence to start clunking them and he'll be a weapon

I always wondered if he needed contact lenses, I did in my early twenties, made a huge difference

This is surprising definitely thought he was on the trade table. Hope a full pre season will do him the world of good.

Very pleased about this. Shows the strength of the Club. Sam is still only 24 - he can  make it.
