No Dees.

Thoughts?

Popularity contest. Coaches award has more weight IMO

Gawn second for best Captain.  Petracca 4th for MVP.  No Oliver or Wines in the top 5. Lost a lot of credibility tonight.

Listening to the opinions of plenty of ex-players in the media makes me think that most of the current players probably aren't that bright in actually analysing the game either.

Half the modern players don’t watch a second of other games. Some watch a bit, footy nerds like Gawn are rare.

Was thinking exactly the same 'Skuit'...

A Bont love fest. A super player for sure but getting 3 times more votes than the second placed MVP is strange. Similar with the captaincy. He led them from first to fifth in the last 3 weeks of the season while Maxy was winning the minor premierships after a Herculean second half v the Cats

When were the votes cast i wonder?

That tells you all you need to know about the voting public. Petracca above Oliver…

Yep a real Homer Simpson moment!

I love our players but Wines not in Top 5? - you must be joking.

On Best Captain? - the playing cohort confuse being a great player with being a great leader. They're relatd but not the same.

Max in spades IMO.  Nathan Jones has it too.

Evidence? - Cue Tex Walker

Players should just stick to getting a kick.

Nothing more than a popularity contest and I don’t think our "team first” bunch of players will give a crap

The players voted for these awards, not the public.

i remember one year when one of the lonie twins won the 'bravest player' or whatever award, as voted by the players

they don't really take it that seriously i don't think

It is bizzare for Bontempelli to have nearly 3 times the votes of the second place getter, Walsh.

And, surely, every player knows who Oliver is!

Not saying Bontempelli shouldn't have won but to not have Oliver, Wines in the top 5 is bizzare.

Usually the players get it right.  Not this year.

Does any other sport have awards where players get to vote for their mates? It just seems a completely ridiculous idea, in that (a) half the players would have absolutely no idea what the rest of the competition is up to and (b) most of them wouldn't take it seriously anyway.

I find it quite bizarre as well. Could it be a little bit of jealousy and blowback from dominating the other awards? I do recall a few players in the past saying they rely on media / stats...but if that was the case then we should have had Oliver smashing it.

In the end it doesnt really matter because i dont think this aware is that prestigious anyway.

Nailed it, DA.

I do wonder how much of this is a popularity contest?

Bont is a nice guy on the field, so other players vote for him. Wines and Oliver are competitive beasts. Probably not out there making friends.

Yep I know. I was referring to the players as the ‘voting public’. Could’ve made it clearer i guess.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
