TEAMS: QF vs Brisbane

Our starts of late have been measured and calm. I wonder now that we are in finals if we really crank it up early and exert some dominance.

Joel Smith. Yuck. Big bag coming up for Charlie.

Genuinely surprised jj is not in for Captain Jack.

Interesting to me too. I’m thinking it’s because JJ must be a bit burnt out, given it’s his first full season of footy for 3 years, and as such can only now contribute fully for limited minutes (making him the perfect medi-sub). His TOG was dropping as the season progressed, which suggests they were trying to incorporate the drop-off without leaving him out of the side. Love the boy’s upside though, and that he’ll be a perennial ‘who’s that?’ whilst being a core selection for years to come.

Robinson can damaging.

Yes he is tough and goes hard at the ball but turns it over a lot. My Brissie mates up here who go to the Gabba reckon his kicking is woeful. Hope it continues and he wins ball and gives it back to us!!

He's barely best 22 -  if at all.

I think it is a toss up between Nathan Jones (the sentimental favourite) or Michael Hibberd as the medical substitutes for the Demons against the Lions.

Mark my words....this will be a tough and hard game! The Lions should not be underestimated. In another news article the Lions said they have become "hardened" after recent finals losses. This game will be no easy task for the Demons!

If Mitch Robinson goes berserk against us and starts belting our players then we need to get Nathan Jones onto the ground as the medical substitute to deal with him. Two tough old bulls going head-to-head! Nathan Jones will also be fired up to prove a point with this being only his 3rd chance to play finals.

Another concern is Charlie Cameron who is a brilliant forward pocket player who reminds me a lot of our very own Jeff "The Wizard" Farmer. We need to keep a close tag on him. This is where I think Michael Hibberd may be a good option as the medical substitute too.

Anyway, I am sure the MFC coaching staff are currently having these debates about who should be the medical substitute against the Lions.

I think Hibberd is the least likely to be the medi-sub because he lacks versatility. If a defender is injured and needs to be replaced, Brayshaw can go back (if it's one of the smaller defenders) or McDonald if it's a tall. Structurally, they can be more readily replaced by Jordan, Jones or Melksham. In other words, those three provide more options than does Hibberd as the medi-sub.

The more surprising non-selection as an emergency is Weideman. Not because he should be the medi-sub, but because the idea of four emergencies is to cover all positions for a late change and there is no true tall player as an emergency. I guess if any of our talls need to be replaced before the game, Melksham will come in.

Feel really sorry for Hibberd who has done more than required of him for the year.

A long finals series ahead, I think he'll still be required at some point

Joel Smith will go to Charlie Cameron from the first bounce.

Hibberd is a proven defender and i really worry that he is not on the ground. Cameron and Smith need closing down.

I hope Goody is on top of this.

In my opinion a high risk strategy would rather Hibbo

Gosh I hope I am wrong!

My concerns with Hibbo are that, in recent games, he has been very fumbly with the footy and prone to slipping over, both of which are usually signs of a career in decline.  I'll back the Footy Department  to make the right call.

Worried about who is going to stop the Brisbane smalls? we'd wanna make sure we mark a lot of those balls coming in and our pressure is enormous

Gotta be Jones for the medi sun. That’s not just emotions talking (although of course they are there) but his hardness, form apparently and experience would make a difference. Even having him on the bench during the game is another perspective and quasi coach there.

If he has to come on and snags a goal it would be tide turningly inspirational as well

Hibbo was excellent against Cameron in the last game.  Risky move by Goody to keep Smith.  Maybe trying to keep Lever loose with Smith taking on McCarthy.

Lions will go to town on that 20mins where we were monstered by the Cats. They have the class to go even better so I’m not worried about the small forwards as much as I’m worried about the clearances.

Geez we have a good list.

Yes many of our best rated players in the  named 22 are in the 100 to 150 game mark.  We usually average about 10 here and out-number most other teams in this category.

Possibly a sweet spot that fits the bill between experience but also youthful enough to run out most matches somewhere near full tilt.

That is worrying to me.

Yes Dwight and the Port smalls if we get that far

Agree. As my mate, a very astute football observer says, Hibbo is 'a one trick pony'.
He was poor against the Giants (3 disposals) and his fumbles against both Dogs and Hawks cost us dearly IMO.

I'm thinking either JJ or Nate as medi-sub. JJ having more speed than Nate would be my pick,

The teams are very even, but one cause for MGC optimism is that we have Jack Viney - it's his season now.

Brisbane were one of the form teams going into the finals. We beat them by 5 goals, some commentators regarded it as a 10goal win. We lowered our eyes when delivering the ball into F50. All the forwards except TMac presented at some stage but even he required opposition defenders which freed up others to shine. Our forward line (and delivery into F50) is arguably playing at its best(with room for improvement) at the right time. Enjoy the ride. Go Dees

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?

It was only a preseason match but the new look Demons spearheaded by new coach Steven King looked impressive as they put on a clinic against perennial cellar-dwellers North Melbourne as they cruised to an 80 point victory at Casey Fields.
