I remember when Shane Woewodin won the Brownlow as a Demons player back in 2000. It was definitely a great honour and exciting to watch at the time. However, I am sure Shane would of given up that Brownlow in a heart beat for a Premiership medallion.

Don't get me wrong! Brownlows are nice to win and a Demons player hasn't won a Brownlow since Shane did in 2000.

However, I am sure Clayton Oliver, Christian Petracca and Max Gawn are more focused on trying to break our 57 year Premiership drought! We definitely have bigger fish to fry in 2021!

I also think either Marcus Bontempelli or Ollie Wines will probably win the 2021 Brownlow anyways.

2021 Premiership medallions are what the Demons need to be aiming for!

If umpires follow the coaches we should know if Oliver can win after round 19 votes.

Bontempelli will be in front but he scored once in the last 4 rounds with 7 (4+3) votes so unlikely to get BOG.  Oliver's votes in the last 4 rounds: 9, 3, 0, 10. Possibly two BOG's?   Wines will be close @19 and his votes in the last 4 rounds:  6, 2, 2, 8.

I just hope the umpires didn't buy the media hype all year of how fantastic Bontempelli is - bit of a media darling.

Oliver won the coaches award by quite a margin.  Lets see if the umpires do the same.

If Clarry doesn't win it, being rated 15% better than anyone else in the league by all the coaches, then it's just another example of the umpires having NFI and reinforces why I yell at them for poor decisions every week.

Clarry deserves it but a little concerned about some other Dees grabbing some of the votes off him.

1. Ollie

2. Bont

3. Wines

Seeing Wines up and about in these lists, I Can only think about Jimmy Toumpas.

If Oliver doesn't finish top 3 it will confirm once and for all that umpires have NFI and should not be allowed to vote on such an individual honour.

I'm going to go with a surprise option

1. Zach Merrett

2. Marcus Bontempelli

3. Ollie Wines

I think you will find the AFL can take votes off Miller.  He is ineligible having been suspended earlier in the season.

Isn't it true that typically the winner is rarely from a top club because team mates share the votes? So Oliver would be unlikely.

This gets repeated all the time and it's complete bollocks.

Since 2000: Neale, Tom Mitchell, Dusty, Danger, Fyfe, Sam Mitchell, Swan, Ablett, Bartel, Goodes x2, Cousins, Buckley, Aker, Black, Woewodin all won brownlows in top 4 sides.

Winning games >>>> teammates stealing votes.

Trawling through the coaches votes it is noticeable that Oliver was very frequently a 5+5 or 5+4 vote. Those very visibly and unanimous top games should have him up there.

It's hard to see him winning though, simply because of the variety of other Demons who have had BOG performances, and the highly visibly games of the likes of Wines and Bont.

Then you've got Jack Steele whose numbers are every bit as good and who has stood out by a mile at St Kilda. Their next best mid is well below him for stats and a whole other level below him for the mystical 'presence' and real impact on games. I'd argue that St Kilda would have been bottom-4 without him this year and there's about 8 games where he is probably BOG and another five where he was St Kilda's best.

Anyway, on that basis I've got Steele stealing it (oh, no, the headlines, the headlines, no)

1. Steele

2. Macrae

3. Wines

4. Oliver

5. Bontempelli

6. Angus Brayshaw

Melbourne will have the highest total as a club, cracking 80 and possibly even 90 votes total.

As mentioned earlier, he is ineligible due to suspension.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
