Note the thread started before our game vs Cats finished, so one of the first few posts said this...

"Cats 40 points up against the Demons, almost certain now to be playing the Cats next week, we are going to need Marcus Adams to do another job on his bunny ie. Tomahawk"

Nek minnit...

"We might be playing Melbourne after all and that scares me, we don't match up well"

😁

A few more highlights from the first couple of pages...

"Keeping Lever occupied is going to go a long way to winning us this game. He'll probably go to Fullarton or McStay (with Petty going to the other one, and May to Daniher), and it'll be important for whoever it is to keep him accountable. He controlled the defensive 50 for Melbourne tonight.

The big battle will be the midfield where we were well and truly roasted last time. McInerney needs to do a better job this time in neutralising Gawn in the ruck.

Gardiner will be a big in compared to the round 12 match defensively. McDonald ran a bit rampant last time, and the extra lock down defender will be handy"

==================

"I still have nightmares about the last time we played them.

Probably the best first half we’ve played (taking into account the opposition) followed by one of the best second halves Demons have played under Goodwin.

They’re fast finishers and will never give up regardless of how far they’re behind and we’ve been known to concede very quickly against the best sides in recent history.

Had a think about how the match could pan out…

Footy is a game of momentum so you would almost want Melbourne to lead us at half time, then for us to hunt them down. Probably the most realistic way we’ll get the win over them"

==================

"Need to set up better defensively. We looked so impotent when they would win the contested ball and move it by hand. Looked like they had 20 blokes on the field. Just no pressure and our mids don't have the speed to pressure a clean breakaway by hand. So disappointing after that first half but they really worked us out"

Yep, left the best til last

Interesting comment on Lever. Last time they kept him occupied really well (only had 2 marks and 9 possessions) and they still lost. Salem was in a slump or playing injured as well.

If we're at our best i don't think they're good enough to beat us, bring the pressure and the heat. lately we've been doing it for patches of games and that's been enough to pile on goals, apart from the Gold Coast where the 2012 Mark Neeld Dees probably would have beaten them that day.

Midfield battle will be key, if we break even or better, i think we win by 4-5 goals. May gave Daniher a bath last time, i'd expect Petty should cover McStay and Lever should get a small or a lesser match up which suits him.

It’s an interesting match because at each end of the ground are two forwards that were bug talking points during the off season. I remember Daniher had an awful second half against us and looked so off the pace, it’s not so much a match up but it’s going to be curious to see who has the better game. Could well decide the result. Would love Benny to have a massive game first week of finals.

Petty on McStay is the matchup that worries me the most. one-on-one McStay will outmuscle Petty so if we dont pressure the source this avenue to goal will be problematic.

McStay is one of those players who in the past has played well against MFC. Yes we are different side, but im yet to exercise those demons.

Wouldn't you put Petty on Daniher?

Well Joe isn’t exactly the strongest forward going around, so maybe.

Other teams’ supporters being scared to death of us? Hook it to my veins!!!

isnt there a bit of a height differential. I suppose our defensive structure and match-ups will all be about getting Lever on the 3rd/4th tall. Hence why the Lions will want to go tall.

When it comes to repelling the Demons,  there's only one word that matters - it's "exorcise". I'm pretty sure they're already well-exercised. But point taken...Petty will need to be on his game if that's the match-up.

I had a little confused churn in my gut when they said we never give up.

It's like finding out your secret high school crush has been asking people about you. It's great news but now you have the pressure of actually delivering!

Not sure what all this ‘who plays on who’ stuff is about. We play a zone defence.

If we go in unchanged, we'll have five changes:

In: Bowey, Smith, Viney, Brown, Langdon

Out: Hunt, Hibberd, Jordon, Weideman, Melksham

They'll be missing Hipwood but otherwise will be pretty much the same side as last time we played.

Considering Hipwood always causes us grief him being out is fantastic.

Unless we are losing it out of the middle - then we play 'kick 4 goals on us in 2 mins OMG OMG WTAF'

I’ve always wondered how much of this commentary is from Brisbane based folk and how much from ex-Fitzroy supporters.

Couldn’t give a [censored] either way.

Wow, finally a team that has fans that can communicate in proper English… I don’t mind the Lions to be honest, no hatred at all, so just looking forward to a standard good honest match with Oliver dragging a blood-saturated mane across the boundary line after the siren, staring into the horizon  and looking to the next match…

Yeah. Fortunately it’s easy to identify the moronic fans up here. They wear shirts with “Broncos” emblazoned upon them.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
