I agree Jackson would be worth more than Cerra.

As I mention above, perhaps Jackson wasn't in a panic go get out in 2021. This is 100% just a thought, an idea, not sure how much more I can clarify that before certain posters start getting 'upset'.

    So the agent guessed that Jackson wasn't on the table and they decided not to explore the deal further and moved straight to Carlton. Don't you think there would have been some more detailed conversations happening that weren't shown? The scenario you present is more than a stretch. Hell... It's more than a giant leap.

    Wouldn't the more likely scenario been that the agent asked the Demons what they were going to offer and that Jackson didn't come up in the conversation because he had no intention of leaving?

If he was, things wouldn't have played out like they did. In turn, that rules out your concern that Jackson might have indicated to the club that he wants to go home.

    An alternative explanation for the "don't worry about that" quote is that the club was trying to convince Cerra that he wanted to go nowhere other than Melbourne (i.e. don't worry about Fremantle, if you nominate us you'll get here for whatever we offer).

    My guess would be in that scenario MFC would not have wanted it getting out that Jackson was open/looking for a trade before Cerra had decided who he would nominate.

    Cerra and his agent ruled us out because they couldn't see how we would get the deal done, which is always a bit of a nightmare for agents and player (see above comments re Bobby Hill).

    Look, I'll cop the blame for maybe not explaining it clearly enough, maybe because I understood what I was saying I thought others would automatically get it (standing aside the usual posters who like to have a crack no matter what), but given our lack of attractive picks, our lack of attractive future picks, and no obvious link with other players who would attract decent trade value, I don't see why people seem so upset that it made me worried Jackson could be linked.

    I get it that others may not agree with my way of thinking about it, but honestly, the personal attacks and screaming down has been over the top. (Not directed at you obviously).

    The only way I can see we would have gotten Cerra is if we traded Jackson for him. Ergo, I deduce that we did, in fact, put Jackson on the trade table and Jackson said no or Fremantle said no. So I think this means that Jackson will re-sign, but then maybe he won’t as he hasn’t yet.

    He actually wanted to come to Melbourne, but we weren't able to organise a swap. That's why there was a lag before he belatedly signed with Carlton.

    Ah not quite.  Cerra didnt beleive the club could organise the swap so picked Carlton, even though the Dees said Just leave that to us.  (Must have wanted out real bad)

    If LJ ends up leaving this year it's a big missed opportunity to get Cerra, who is a gun.

    But what's done is done and I'll back our FD to make any LJ trade work, if that is indeed what does eventuate.

    I think Carlton would be more than happy with what Cerra has given them and what he will be giving them in future. Their midfield finally began to look like a coherent unit, with a number of previously questionable players now giving a much more complete contribution. Cerra's all-round good midfield game has helped that happen.

    On the other hand, I feel like if we had got him, the price might have been more than the value. Not because of anything wrong with him so much as because there is a lot 'right' with us already!

    Speaking of midfielders and their usefulness in different circumstances: you have to feel a bit for Luke Dunstan. He's played half as many games this season as he had Brownlow votes last season!

    I can't help wondering if he might 'do a Preuss' and rotate onwards to another club for better opportunities.

    Interesting someone said in this thread that a bunch of Carlton players took paycuts to fit him in.  That's all good and well if you're in the window but to do that and not make finals would hurt!

    They must be in for some salary cap pain as they have improved out of sight and probably injuries cost them from a finals berth.

    Would be throwing the Jackson  $$ (if he doesn't stay) at De Konig who was replaced by Pittonet at the end of the season - and because the blues have multiple tall forwards, he can't rest there.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
