I don't like the look. I'm not a doctor so can't comment on the physical implications but unprovoked pressure to the neck of a guy lying down after what was actually a ripper tackle is neither tough nor smart. Especially so late in the game when there was absolutely nothing on the line.

I'm a bit surprised about the array of perspectives on here... I reckon if it was our bloke copping an elbow to the neck we'd be calling for weeks. But I can relate to not wanting guys like Viney on the sidelines heading into the finals. He (like Harmes) is one who desperately need to find form and that won't happen sitting in the stands.

Viney plays on the edge and that’s why most love him.   We need blokes like this and the tackle he makes on Collins is the perfect example of why he is so valuable to this side and will be one of our most important players come finals

Who do you exactly speaking for? Most of the commentary the last two years has been about Viney playing the rugby league style of trying to run through opponents, and instantly get pinged for holding the ball. If he's not doing that he's running through his teammates and having no awareness of his surroundings.

Playing on edge is him giving away stupid free kicks by being dumb about it. This is becoming a constant theme for him the past 2 years.

There's playing on edge, and there's being silly by not channelling that properly on the field.

Just dumb; inconceivably stupid.

Nothing tough about laying into a guy who’s already lying on his back.  Nothing to gain, plenty to lose.

Shouldn’t even both getting on the plane.

Just cool your jets and have a closer look. Viney wanted no part of it until Collins engaged in the wrestle.

Some perspective for the delusional. Bad look but not a hanging offence

I think most people in this thread including me who said it’s a bloody bad look, think he will get a week. Not 7.
A week for stupidity and for not being a big name player from a big club. But also for utter stupidity and potential of serious injury is fair.
If he gets a fine he is lucky just as a few before him have been.

viney provoked by being pulled down and held. wasn't a strike, just a push. can't measure pressure from a video, impact was low, collins gets up and shows no sign of injury or distress

not a good look and a bit prolonged but only deserves a fine.....move on

Sure, that happened. Then he was a part of it and stuck the point of his elbow into someone's neck for 5 seconds. Come off the 'he started it' argument.

Can’t begin to imagine why you, I mean, why “someone” would risk life and limb (and various other body parts) hanging curtains while starkers. Each to their own, I guess. ?

Stupid act but is it worse that an elbow to the head?

Historically MFC have been the groundbreakers in tribunal suspensions.  Trengove v Dangerfield sling tackle, Grinter v Wallace, even Jakovic the only player ever suspended for wrestling, so I suspect he will get 3 weeks.

A stupid act and deserves one week, therefore I agree he'll get three because Melbourne

I don’t know why we get to round 20 ands the AFL decide not to grade this under their rules

Intentional conduct, high contact, low impact = 1 week

You've forgot the most important part - the offence.

It's not striking. It could be deemed rough conduct but that's there catch all they usually use for bumps.

Incidents like this are usually deemed misconduct and given fines, but they've deemed this too serious for misconduct. Hence sent to the tribunal.

1 week for every second he un-necessarily has his forearm on the throat.

5 week holiday.

I think it will be a minimum 3, possibly 4.

Also, there was an horrific incident at the SCG a few years ago, different sport but similar area of the body.

Did Collins play out the game?

is he concussed?

Any stitches?

Will he play next game?

Did Collins contribute to the position Viney was in?

Appeal written all over this!

I'm at two minds with this. As a father with young kids who like to watch the footy and see this sort of behaviour and wish the players would stop doing it.

On the other hand it doesn't look like there's much in it, Viney looks to be telling the player something and holding him down down to make sure the guy hears what he has to say. This sort of thing happens all of the time and is no more silly or dangerous than things that result in a fine week in/week out. This is classic Joel Selwood sort of stuff

So much ridiculous hysteria here.

It 'looks' poor but how do you know from the angle that Collins didn't pull Vineys jumper down? That happens a lot on these type of scraps

Just wait to see what the story is....

Yep and we signed him up on big money  for an average player

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
