POSTGAME: Rd 20 vs Gold Coast

A good win and one to take some really good positives out of it.

It was a bit of a training drill and honestly dont mind that we dropped off a little. Still had 7 shots at goal, so not like we just didn't put scoreboard pressure.

I'll start with the negatives:

Harmes and Viney were simply horrible ( am I allowed to say that @Baghdad Bob? ) the amount of times these two got the ball, tucked it under their arm, put a don't argue and then get pinged. It was absolutely infuriating! I thought maybe after a serious bake at half time that maybe they'll cut the crap out. But they didn't, they kept doing it. It's selfish, and makes them both look like absolute muppets. Does Harmes honestly think he's Dusty Martin? The coaches need to hit these two between the eye because it's simply going to cost us finals and the up and coming big games that are coming up. I would love the club to send a statement and drop one of them if not both, but we know it won't happen.

The other negative is that at times we played a bit too much Hollywood. Cute little flick no look handballs over the top etc. Sparrow and Harmes were the main suspects. It's a minor thing that can be cleaned up.

Another game where we kicked more points then goals. Guys like Viney, Harmes, McDonald, Petracca all missed simple goals that were in front.  How on earth can this be rectified? They do enough goal kicking at training, but it's getting beyond the joke now.

Positives

Forward pressure and tackling inside 50 was immense. It was evident, and probably the best I've seen it all year. If we could please bring that every week then there's no doubt we can go all the way.

I hope this is the confidence boosting game that Brown needed. His workmate was fantastic and there was glimpse of the Ben Broen we've come to applaud from his days at North when he was at his absolute elite. He was on a good defender in Sam Collins who I rate highly.

As much as I was hard on Jackson throughout the week, it was a great game to return to form and give him some much needed confidence. It still doesn't change my opinion that heading into finals I'm not entirely sure if he's in our best team. I'm taking into consideration of the low quality of opposition out there, but I suppose you can only play who you are matched up against.

Thought Jayden Hunt played another good game. Really loving the dash he is providing and since the GWS game he's really simplified his game.

Harrison Petty doesn't get much acknowledgement, but his defending today was elite. Just well times spoils and his closing speed is something that's not really mentioned much. Just a great general defender who now looks comfortable at this level.

Oliver was crazy good.

The fact that we were still showing enormous pressure in the dying minutes of the game shows we were still not satisfied with our work.

Huge few weeks coming up.

Maybe trying to avoid another Milk incident.

Melsham/Vanders in for Viney/Harmes next week

He was initially but the team weren't allowed to shower him with gatorade as Port Adelaide were going in to the change rooms for tonights game....so he jumped back into line with the rest of the players.

I used to think it was us, but it's all teams - so it's no longer Hollywood, it's as beige as Craigieburn.

Irrespective of what happens from now, this is our most successful Home and Away season in terms of premiership points since 1990 when we won 16 games.  14.5 wins is better than any season since, and that includes our GF season of 2000 (14 wins) and our preliminary final seasons of 1994 (12), 1998 (14) and 2018 (14).  Let's hope we can beat the 16 of 1990 and secure top 4.

A good point - this was a notable trait of our game in the first half of the season. Good to see it back, hope it stays!

I love a nice Brandy Old. I may be a philistine but I like it with chocolate licorice. Bought a nice packet of Daryl Lea bullets today so I think I will enjoy a lovely Hennessey XO with those to celebrate later tonight.  I'll save the Cognac for finals!!!

Quoted for good taste!

That's exactly how you play bottom of the ladder sides. Keep the frenetic pressure up early and put some space between you before half time so they just drop their heads and you can cruise for the last quarter and a half. If they go into half time thinking they're a chance they will fight it out in the second half. Hopefully we've learnt and do the same to the Crows in 2 weeks.

16 wins is actually our most wins in a home and away season ever. So if we win two of the last three we've broken our record.

Has anyone got any stats breakdowns on Harrison Petty's first 6 or so games versus his last 6?

i.e 1v1's lost, etc? Seems to have improved a ton in the last month or so, wondering what the numbers say.

Thought it was interesting post match that Goodwin said “if” we go to Perth. Is there any doubt around that?

Would be unreal to get WCE in Melb. Should request to play it at Kardinia park too.

I think it’ll get pretty bad up here for the next few weeks, they’re shutting down schools all over Brisbane, they have no idea where the virus is.

i think the game will be played in Melbourne, WA premier won’t want a team that played a QLD team into his glorious state…

I thought we hopped on a plane straight after the game. Happy for Perth to say “we can’t have them” and have the game in Melbourne. There’s a genuine school of thought to get all teams into Victoria to hub for the last few rounds.

The plan was for us to fly out today, arrive and do a 7 day quarantine for the Monday night game.

Was nice to remember what it was like to put the foot on the accelerator and keep going, hopefully the takeaway from the playing group is that the effort was what allowed the outcome.

My main points of interest from the game;

- Ben Brown got some reward for effort. He does a lot of hard yards and is starting to grow and get comfortable within the group.

- Oliver's first half was ridiculous, he looked like a 16 year old playing 12 year olds. He was on such a different level

- Petty was brilliant, unfortunately for Tommo, I think he's a better defender and is doing everything else just as well.

- I saw a couple of shepherds from our guys

- We still have plenty of room to improve based on that outing, Gold Coast were as bad as I have ever seen from an AFL side (barring us in years gone by)

- If anyone was concerned about Bowey being capable, you can rest easy now. He made good decisions, executed well and he looked as assured as I have ever seen from a first gamer. Viney and Harmes could learn a lot from the way he played. Do the simple things well and don't bite off more than you can chew.

Loved Bowey's work, he looked so comfortable at the top level. Could we see him and Rivers off the back flanks for the next 10 years?

He looks so composed. Love his game.

Bowey's smart handball, bouncing it below some other players and straight into the recipient's arms was beautiful. Can't remember to whom and when sorry.

Love Harmes, but boy, gee, wow, selfish.

Travelling to Queensland has had a strange effect on our players. Last year after the disaster of Cairns we had an epiphany and started winning games consistently and after last weekends joy ride to Brisbane we start demolishing weaker sides. Something we could never do amongst regular victories over strong sides. Queensland appears a channel for taking out frustrations in a positive way.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
