That might well be so but just a reminder that Melbourne’s first draft pick at the moment is in the 30s. Even if we trade up, where do the club’s priorities lie in November. A development ruckman?

Other people clearly follow this much closer than me - but from what I've seen and heard he's only shown glimpses of potential.

Players like Grundy and Jackson showed a lot more at the same age.  Maybe not his fault as he is so lightly built at the moment.

But it's rare of clubs to draft so highly solely on potential.  If he's 3-4 years away, which clubs are going to use their first round pick on him - it's such a risk and clubs / recruiting managers are held to account for these decisions when they don't come off.  (You don't want to be the guy that picks a Luke Molan or Lucas Cook in the first round)

Put it this way - If we had a pick in the first round, I'd be concerned if we were looking to use it on this kid unless he showed a bit more in the second half of the year.

We have done really well over the last two years in recruiting younger players with talent and great potential. Just like fruit on the vine, allow these future Demons the chance to ripen over time ... recruiting one ruckman just is not the sole outcome of our development or onfield success.

Can someone explain how much effort and resources we actually put in to our NGA? A lot of posters saying it's not worth it; is it really as simple as 'You fit the rules, come train during summer' or is there more to it than that?

@dazzledavey36may have some idea. Just working out if I'm going to be outraged just because they've changed the rules or genuinely outraged.

Irrelevant due to their upstart demands being regularly met by the AFL, and ability to offer top dollar to the player as a nurturant incentive.

Exactly, why not phase it out over a 3 year period beginning from last year, and allow each club to select one player in that 3 year window under the old rules - and everyone else under the new rules? Cutting it off completely just means some clubs got a massive leg up, and others didn’t. A phased approach allows for consistency.

And the AFL would not know consistency if they fell over it - explains the way it has been changed.

I don't think he will be a top 10 selection. Too much risk. 14-22 by my observations.

i still reckon it will be a brave club who uses a first round pick on a player probably requiring long development

It's an interesting one, if we weren't eligible for Mac Andrew would we still be urging for a Phased Out approach of a system that wasn't really fair to begin with?

Hoping he sneaks through, would like to benefit from a rule that has helped other clubs but if it doesn't what can you do.

We've probably had Mac since he was 14-15 in our junior academy system.

Last year he trained a couple of times with the club in the off season, as did all our other current academy players like Kobi George and  Ryan Koo Kwet Kim from Dandenong Stringrays. 

Unfortunately due to the new rule change,  we are about to lose a gun player that we've helped support and provide great training resources since 15 years of age to a click of a finger.

Go figure.

To be fair to the AFL I believe it is being phased. It was no change last year, top 20 picks this year and top 40 picks next year.

MFCSS has to exist for a reason and there is another one.

Just typical.

I still hold hope that he won't go top 20.  I can't see a very tall, skinny kid like that ( 70 kgs ), playing for a couple of years.  There are other kids in the  draft possibly ready to go in the AFL and several clubs may not have the need for a developing ruckman.

Can you imagine explaining to your members that you took a kid top 20, that might need 2-3 years before he is ready to play.That is usually the late picks and rookie picks for that type of player.

I am confident the rule wouldn't have changed if the NGA player was tied to the Cats or Saints.

Well, if we thought Mac was a real talent, I hope we lobbied to exclude players that maybe clubs had already put years into, spending considerable time and resources.

I haven't seen any other player mentioned this year, as an NGA player going top 20, that would affect another club.

Great then that it comes into play, after other clubs have reaped the benefit.

And in that sense, the AFL has always shown consistency.

NGA system had massive issues from the start, it was only brought in to shut up Eddie and Co.  No idea on this kid, raw with potential from what you read some will have him top 20 others from 20-40 range.

The club really needs to spend time developing potential Father Son/Daughters, there is no incentive to have a NGA with the new rules unless you are a club in NSW and QLD
