We play the same as the bulldogs pushing additional numbers to the contest.

We actually don't...

Rivers very lucky to keep his spot I'd say.

If Bowey is half as good as his ranga brother clarry, i'm sure he'll go well.

I started a rant about our forward line beginning to get organised at last, but then realised I was in the wrong thread, apologies.

I'm seeing the changes as resting Jordon and omitting Hibberd. Hibberd will need to seriously refresh if he is to make his way back into the team, whereas Jordon I would be confident of seeing again once the young legs have taken a bit of load off for a short while.

I expect we might see some other players, especially the young ones, get a rest in the next week or two.

Bowey I'm excited to see out there. I am, of course, thinking he will immediately be a more skillfull Caleb Daniel or the ultimate Ranga Rioli.

Sparrow actually has a decent kick so I'm pleased about him getting a game. Plus, he's earned it after six unused games on the bench. According to AFL Statspro he only averages six disposals a game.. possibly because they've counted every one of his unused sub games as if it were a game. As a result of that he actually is one of the lowest 'rated' players of all time.  Idiots.

This might confuse people given that just a few weeks ago I was seriously concerned about our forward line, but I think it is actually settling much, much better as Brown finds his spot.

Brown, Fritsch, Mcdonald and Pickett all managed goals on the weekend - kicking 7.5 between them and a couple dropping short. No doubt accuracy still has a question mark on it but actually getting the opportunities and troubling the scorers is coming along now. This forward line functions.

Of course, now our problem has moved to the midfield and the total collapse of our field kicking. YAY!

We're 6th overall for points scored, yet last in accuracy. If we kicked a bit straighter they'd be saying how deep the fwd line is.

Yes they did. 6 goals from stoppages. We were incredible vulnerable when the ball went to ground in defensive 50.

Melbourne are rated as the worst in the AFL for giving up scores from defensive 50 stoppages.

Is that season wide or over the last few weeks?

I can't think of a match other than last week where it was a serious problem. Last week was an enormously bad outlier (at least it needs to be, otherwise our season is shot).

The whole "we've been worked out" thing is IMO rubbish. Teams are changing their game plan to try to bring the ball to ground. The Dogs happen to have the deepest and strongest midfield in the comp, so stoppages are precisely what they should want. Can all other 16 clubs do it as well as them? I might be wrong (hence my asking about the stat you've quoted) but I don't see this as being a fatal flaw.

I love that Bowey's mum's name is Dee.

And apparently her middle name is Dee Ramone

Not 100% sure, sorry mate. It was mentioned on AFL 360 earlier in the week.

Gut feel is that it might be like some of our other stats, as in - something we were already middle of the table or worse with but then over the last 6 weeks has gotten worse.

I think the 'worked us out' stuff has some merit in that teams have been able to develop strategies to combat our strengths, but as you mention it's another thing to be able to execute it effectively.

Bit of a shame the match isn't being played at the Gabba Gabba Hey?

The emergencies:  Hibberd, Melksham, Weideman and Jordon have not been named for Casey.  Nor has AVB, Chandler, J.Smith or Daw.

So unless there are some mystery injuries/omissions we are travelling with a squad of 30 players.  Plenty of opportunity to rotate selections and manage players as needed.  I really hope we take that opportunity.

Ugh, so I've had a weekend sabbatical from my dear wife and dear child,  I've ended up in a place where there is internet 2001 style... 1 bar - 3G on my phone... I was happy to have some quiet time and just sloth around by myself in my Y-fronts, and watch the footy tomorrow.... BUT no access...  I could essentially be in the middle of the atlantic. I have no idea if this will even post.

Now, some would say it's an opportunity to detox from the net... true true..

But what I want to know, is the game on TV tomorrow?

So you disagree then?

I don’t disagree that he had a poor game by his standards, but I do disagree with the assumption that he had ‘zero defence’, and we already have Pickett as that creative goal-kicking small forward. Let’s not act like Spargo completely [censored] the bed.

Fair enough, in retrospect the zero defence was perhaps harsh, but I still maintain that as a forward he needs to both kick more goals and get much more of the ball.

So with the change of venue, will that mean Bowey's family can be there for his debut?

Ben Brown's first game for us at Marvel.  He showed a bit against the Dogs last week and could be ready to cut loose.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
