Hnmm anyone else unhappy with that conversion rate? Here above are the stats. Now can I reference this by saying that goal kicking IS a specialised art, and one that requires not only plenty of practice but a firm set shot routine. Shots on the run are more problematic, but set shots from anywhere in a 45 degree ark from 45 or so out should be absolute "Gimmes". Missing from 35 out almost directly in front is just dreadful goalkicking.  Putting on my Sports Science and Phys Ed teachers hat, quality practice and set shot routines start from Junior footy, but can still be coached at Senior footy providing the technique is kept relatively simple and is Biomechanically correct. I have seen plenty of players practicing at the end of training but that is not what I would call, specific, discrete, open or cloze skill model! Years ago I worked with some A grade Ammos clubs specifically on goal kicking drills and skills to improve set shot routines. I wont go into the method but it worked well enough for me and others as well. I suspect that AFL and other clubs probably dont have the resources to afford a specific goal kicking coach but should as given that it is a professional sport with professional level salaries, players missing easy goals just should be an aberration more than the norm.

If there's one area we should pay someone to help with its goal kicking. Find the best coach in the business and pay them top dollar. Maybe some cash is freed up through Burgess moving on to cover the cost

They can't waste time practicing kicking for goal. It would take away valuable time from working on things that help win matches.

To see blokes lining up 30m out on not much of an angle and then kick sideways around their body ... in the top competition in the land. Words fail.

Meanwhile ... Adelaide 1 pt. Hawks draw. Two more straight kicks = 2 more wins.

They don't even have to be the best in the land. There must be ammo coaches out there watching and shaking their heads in disbelief at the travesty playing out weekly.

So if any team can get 60% of shots in and have plenty of ball then a win comes automatically! Who would have thought eh?? Agree this around the body madness for anything other than accute angle is mindboggling! Peter Mc Kenna had a magnificent goal to pionts average and I never ever saw him kick around the corner. MAGNIFICENT drop punts from 60 with unnering accuracy was his go. Peter Hudson, Doug Wade , Diamond Jim Tillbrook, just magnificent kicks for goal.

Inaccuracy doesn't help, but like inside 50s, hitouts etc... I think this is a stat that needs a second level of analysis.

It's one thing to miss from 50 metres out on the boundary or from a speculative snap, and another to miss from 30 out directly in front. I'd like to see many of those points are missed set shots from angle/distance where you'd expect them to go through and how many are aimless long bombs to the square that go through off hands.

So just so I’m clear, for every 100 shots on goal - the bulldogs for example kick 1.5 more goals than us? And Port roughly 6 more goals? 

And if we roughly work out that it’s 20 scoring shots per game - thats 5 games for 100 scoring shots - so over 5 games 

Port kick 6 goals more than us from an accuracy perspective.

Now mathematics isn’t my strong point. But is my logic in interpreting these stats correct?

Would love a stat on where our shots have been taken from. My thoughts on the issue is that we were getting deeper entries more in the corridor earlier in the year. Now we hug the safety of the boundary and a lot of shots are from 40-50m 

We have lost the ability to hit up a 20m pass before then going into the forwardline.

Brayshaw’s last qtr miss was the costly one and a reflection of our woes this year.

A player that was supposed to be renowned as an elite set shot for goal, can’t nail a shot from 40 mtrs out on a slight angle. It’s been happening all year from some of our players including Kozzie, Petracca and Gawn. T Macs also been poor at times at the regulation set shot.

Was also annoyed at Brayshaw’s arrogant celebration after he kicked a goal from 1 mtr out from a 50 M penalty, to put us 11 points up, as if the job had already been done.

I can see our conversion holding us back from a genuine tilt this year, unless we can get it right in September.

It was more like 50 metres out. It was an annoying miss but probably not an egregious one.

The worst misses were Brown's in the first quarter and Spargo's in the second. Hunt streaming into the forward 50 in the second quarter when we were 26 points up also didn't end as well as it could have.

As i said this three or four weeks ago.... Get Gary Ablett Jnr in!

Run some deliberate sessions over the next 4 to 5 weeks for all designated forwards and mids.  Even some of the defenders like Lingers and May (missed that fairly straight forward one a few weeks back).

Every little improvement could be the diff between a win or loss in a finals scenario.  Or the last few matches to get us into the four or the top two!

Any coach worth his salt would be addressing this elephant in the room.  It will end up costing us at season's end (finals also).   You can see it coming!

You would think with Adem Yze and Mark "Choco" Williams as assistant coaches we would be dealing with this fundamental issue of goal kicking.

As a mere supporter I admit to being ignorant of how much time an AFL player spends at the club. Nevertheless, with the amount of money an AFL player is getting paid I don't think an extra half an hour of goal kicking practice would hurt?

 

Apparently Mark "Jacko" Jasckson used to kick a 100 balls at goal during training. While we all know he was a larrikin and a bit of a loose cannon he did average four goals a game.

Luke "Dogga" Jackson and Angus Bradshaw definitely need to practice their set shots for goal more.

As for not being able to afford extra coaches at the moment. That's fine, I understand that. But what about volunteers? Brad Green maybe? David Neitz? David Schwarz? Even Garry Lyon? Anyway, I am just throwing out a few ideas.

Our goal kicking is woeful and must be improved.

Some blame the Players association and the Enterprise bargaining agreement which limits time spent by a player at the club.

In the old days goal kicking was a solitary skill practised outside training. Now it has to form part of training which takes away from other team activities.

No idea what the answer is.

Sometimes we are the beneficiary of wayward kicking. Few remember that in our glorious defeat of Hawthorn in the 2018 finals the usually very accurate Jack Gunston kicked 3 goals 5 behinds

the EBA doesn't stop players from practicing in their own time. Proper professionals would do it. I reckon BB does
