Umpiring for Collingwood

Can't be happy with the free against Sparrow or the mark not paid to May resulting in 2 free goals to the filth but how does the ump reverse a decision about out of bounds on the full because Pendlebury complains to him.

Plenty of players dispute decisions but they are never reversed; how come the Pies captain can get away with it?

There were many lousy decisions in a long weekend full of them. Short kicks. Moore ran 30 metres across the goal face. The annual sole free for "ran too far" paid against us. A kick out on the full paid a mark. A zillion players running through the "protected" zone. Clarry monstered but hey that's footy. Umpiring in crisis but the AFL do not care. Upset win so exciting!!

According to one of my mates who text me after Mondays loss " if one was cynical you might say the game went to script and the AFL and it's broadcast partners got the theatre/storyline they wanted."

Well 7 had made it all about Buckley. It is sports entertainment these days.

They made some bad calls yes, but how can you be upset at that given how we played?

Not saying it was, but I would suggest it was the result the media craved for.

Flag, you make a good point here and one that surprised (amazed) me as I watched it.

Pendlebury argued vehemently with the umpires and got the decision reversed. The replays indicate that Pendles was correct - fair enough.

However, I've never seen this happen before. In fact, you often hear the commentators laughing when a player argues with an umpire.

Well it did [censored] happen and I'd be interested in other posters views on this.

There were a number of startling decisions that I recall going against us.

One was a block on Lever in the goalsquare allowing Cameron to take a mark. I thought the rule was that you can't block in a marking contest unless you're contesting it. Mihocek (or whoever it was) clearly had no intention of marking it. 

May clearly got first hands on that Cameron grab.

There was one blatant instance of a Collingwood player running through the protected zone, but they haven't been paying that much all year.

The Sparrrow one was interesting - he was tackled and it came out of his hands in a non-legal way, but then he still got his boot to it eventually. I feel like the umpire blew the whistle before seeing the full result. A mistake, I think.

I recall seeing one reversed a long time ago but can’t remember the exact incident or date. Shame we didn’t scream and yell to get that Adelaide non DOOB reversed. But we ain’t AFL royalty like the filth.

I was also upset at how we played.

I have this weird fetish that in the highest level competition in the land, the umpiring should also be of a high standard. But it's literally amateurish, and the stewards of the game don't care. That's how I can be upset at bad calls.

The most bizarre thing about it is that the umpires never get dropped. It’s the same blokes every week, regardless of how poor they are.

That the umpires aren’t professional is no longer a ‘quirk’ of the game. It’s a deliberate decision to protect them from further scrutiny.

If a player makes 3 decisions in a game that directly cost 3 goals they won’t play the next week. If the umpires do it they have nothing to fear. They aren’t called out in the media directly, and it doesn’t cost them anything. It’s beyond bizarre.

PS - I thought the umpires made some howlers on the weekend but had no impact on the result.

werent we in front in the free kick count by almost double? I think the OP mentioned the absolute howlers that did cost us a few goals (NET), but when you play as badly and soft as we did on Monday, you wont draw any sympathy from me on umpiring. The Pies deserved that win.

Umpire 22 isn’t up to standard, but seems to get game after game.

A few shocking decisions, but at the end of the day, three things stood out to me:

- Demons just didn’t run, incredibly flat

- Our disposal was poor

- A few selfish actions cost us goals

When you look at how poorly we played, hard to believe we were within two goals with two minutes to go!

Frees were 28-17 our way.  We were dismal and got what we deserved. 

I do however agree with the OP and that free for out of bounds decision being reversed even though it was the correct decision in the end. Don't think I've ever seen an umpire change his mind because a player questioned the decision before in my life.

With the standard of umpiring these days it'd be a slippery slope for the AFL to go dropping umps for incompetence.
Some weeks they wouldn't have enough umpires to put on the field.

And when it all boils down they are trying to enforce some stupid rules implemented by the AFL.

The umpiring is the worst I've seen.

I've accepted that regardless how much backlash they cop from the media, 5hey won't change anytime soon.

They've ruined watching footy for fun.

They need to be full time, it's insane they officiate a billion dollar sport while having to work full time jobs, run businesses etc.

I have sympathy for them tbh. Their job has gotten harder and harder, the demands have gone up and up as has the scrutiny, but they're still basically expected to do it as a hobby.

Just think about the difference in fitness and skill from when footy players weren't full time to now.

Yes and I should clarify that they're only working off interpretation set by the AFL which is difficult in itself.
