Shame on you!!  I haven't slept a wink since I saw that disgrace on my TV screen on Sat night!!

All true Melb supporters should march to the MCG next Sun arvo in red sox!  (Nothing else, just red sox!!)

Think that would get the AFL's attention that we are serious about preserving our long held traditions and they can't mess with us?

SOCK IT TO 'EM DEES!!

I’m READY VAGG!!!

Did your Mum knit that nifty little number for you?  LOL

Geelong wear white shorts at home to avoid teams changing jumpers.

If Sydney want to wear red shorts and their home kit I’m ok with accomodating them by changing socks.

Why the Swans don’t wear their predominantly white jumper and white shorts more often I don’t know, but I guess they want to look as much as Sydney as possible.

We've worn different socks against the Swans for years, I feel it's been going for longer than a decade

Yeah you're right.

In 1998 we wore blue socks in a win up there at the SCG.

I barely noticed the socks on the weekend as basically every player in the league has their socks down aside from Buddy, Tex Walkers and Joe Daniher.

Was wondering this, majority seemingly wearing calf length socks these days.

Yep, I was the stirrer who raised it in the after match thread.  As others have now added above, we have always been the Redlegs!  Should stay that way!!  End of story!!

Absolutely! Just like the 'G is not our true home ground anymore. We silently endure change without request. We are the Redlegs, and proud of it. I don't give a rat's tonsilectomy about alleged uniform clashes between teams. The newbies on the block can revert to other apparel, let us stay as our historical bithright dictates should we so choose.

Those of us of the older persuasion would remember watching “The Big Replay” on black and white TV. (And there were no big-screen TVs back then.) Watching Richmond v. Essendon was the hardest since the white shorts were the only distinguishing factor. And more often than not, players would be covered in mud so there goes that one distinguishing factor. Talk about 50 shades of grey!

Unless I'm losing my mind, we've definitely worn these socks several times over maybe the last 5-7 years? I remember because I actually think they look really good, as opposed to the short red sock which tends to get a bit lost. Are the long sock even in the uniform anymore apart from rucks? Obviously these are the big issues of our time.

I actually noticed these socks for the first time in our pre-season game against the Bulldogs.

Must be some subtle clash alternative...

and why would you wear white shorts as a clash option when bulldogs have white in their uniform and we don't.

some of these clash decisions defy commonsense

I know, they're bizarre.
I do love seeing the navy jumper with white shorts though.

The Great Sock Debate!!!

I predicted this in one of my early match previews and prediction threads.

I said that if we kept winning we would be reduced to complaining about the socks.

And how do our socks clash with the Bulldogs?

It's not a complaint. I'd just like to know the reason why? As I said at the beginning of this thread, it's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things, but I'm curious about the decision. I haven't seen too many games where Melbourne has run onto the G wearing hooped socks.

This piece about the AFL's consistently inconsistent uniform policy is also worth a read from today's The Age.

Bit surprised that we weren't thrown into that article with the Essendon clash. I'm 99% sure they have never worn a clash strip against us but we (seemingly always being the away team) are always forced to wear our alternative.

The best (or worst) alternative top fail we had was the pink lady match where we wore pink, the ball was pink, and the umpires were pink. I think it was against the doggies and twice we hand-balled straight to the umpire!

The way the big clubs have been allowed to protect their strip has been embarrassing for the AFL, there should have been a very simple directive: create a strip that meets the required criteria or be forced to wear a generic AFL away strip (and make it bright, luminous green).

They wore a clash guernsey against us in 2019, the only time I can ever remember. Their red guernsey. Remember, the AFL banned us from having a red clash guernsey, so we had to have white (and now royal blue). The consistency from the AFL is beautiful.

Once upon a time the Swans wore redlegs just like we do, I remember growing up watching them on TV every Sunday they had the solid red socks...since they changed to the hoops I would have thought there was no clash, no idea why we were wearing red and blue socks

My old-fart memory somewhat different, Sis, and just youtubed Bobby Skilton's career to confirm it was red and white hoops. Then went further back to find ditto in Bob Pratt's time. So...

...they should have hooped it!!?

Collingwood and North in the mud - no one ever worried about clash jumpers then.
even us playing Royboys at junction oval in mud

I cant recall seeing red and blue hoops before, but I have recollection of red socks with blue tops (no idea if a true recollection though).

Fitzroy had the red socks with blue tops. I have a memory of my auntie buying me "Melbourne" socks... she didn't watch much football for they were in fact Fitzroy socks.
