If McDonald and Brown didn’t work there’s no way we’re playing Weid and Brown. Even if Fritsch is out.

Someone needs to play Tomlinson's role. TMac did it well. I'd keep him doing it.

Bring in Weed.

Sparrow for Baker.

Out Tomlinson Melksham Jones

In Weid Sparrow Chandler

I saw enough of TMac and Brown to think it won’t work and the Weid with Brown i my preferred combo. Tmac down back was good so try it and see before get to Petty. Jones was ok but we need the extra speed and that splits it with him out over Baker. I would be very surprised if Fritta gets more than a fine being the kid played out the game.

We were too tall down there today, how forward pressure was terrible.  The problem with BBB is that he gets goals but doesn’t defend.  Once they got TMAC down back we looked to much better.  To me that is the issue, You couldn’t possibly have BBB, Weid and Gawn/Jackson forward.  One always need to be on the bench with our small pressure players chasing/applying pressure.

Melk and Baker need to go, baker runs hard but his kicking into 50 and missed tackles were second rate.

I'd drop Baker, he's only VFL standard despite his desperate last quarter effort and speed he's just not up to it.  I'd put Brayshaw back on the wing (and Choco to teach him how to handpass with his opposite hand!) and Sparrow to play Viney's role for the next 2-3 weeks.  Petty obviously takes Tomlinson's role and I'd bring in Chandler for Jones with Melksham to play sub.

Famous last words but I'm confident both Brown and Fritta will be right.

Now, now Dr. you are just being deliberately inflammatory !!

So, in Demonland parlance, 4-6!

2-3 weeks is what has been reported, where are you hearing 4 weeks?

I’d rather it be 4-6 than have it flare again. We have 2 Viney replacements in Sparrow and Harmes in the VFL. We’ll have at least one of them in the side from next week.

Viney’s really a player that we need available at the right times than one we should need every week at this stage.

Out: Tomlinson, Baker, Melksham, Fritsch*

In:  Petty, Sparrow, Harmes, Weideman*

*if suspended for the high fend off

ANB lucky, couldn't do a single thing right all day.

Brown went off with a head knock with roughly 7 minutes to go and didn't return, possibility for concussion there.

obvious moves would seem to be:

  • sparrow for viney
  • weideman for tomlinson with t mac back OR petty for tomlinson

i lean towards the former for the latter as petty has missed six quarters in a row; that's no preparation for a top 4 clash on a saturday nite

i personally think melksham and baker will 'hold' their spots even tho i'd personally ship them out for harmes and chandler respectively

I agree.

Harmes should not be in the conversation after 1 VFL Hitout.

I reckon Sparrow is far more useful and team orientated

Baker as a late in for Viney wasn’t ideal. I think Sparrow would have been the preferred option but he was getting needed minutes in the VFL before they knew Viney was going to come out.

Sparrow in for Baker

Weid for Tomlinson (TMac back)

Chandler and Bedford also right around the mark, but Melk seems a protected species, and ANB deserves a mulligan after a good start to the year.

Harmes a no from me. Doesn’t currently have that bit of strength and spring he used to, and looked to be just going at VFL level imo.

He is not a natural forward is he. Must have been his twin who use to play at North.

I saw some of the VFL game and Sparrow was the player who stood out. I would make VIney's spot his until Viney is ready again. Sparrow's disposal impresses me as much as his toughness.

I also believe Harmes is still an essential ingredient because of his tagging ability.

For the time being, Tom Mac to CHB, Weidemann to cover Tom, Sparrow for Viney and Harmes for Baker.

Petty is another option. He has great upside waiting to be honed and tested.

Good point re petty. At some point you need to test him in seniors and see if he has it

I’ll be watching the game later but from the names that will be missing it there are some obvious choices for forced replacements.

I’ve looked at Bailey’s elbow/fend off and I just feel our record with the MRO leads me to think he’ll get a week. That means Melksham has a golden ticket almost despite however he played (I can’t comment on his game yet), he proved a suitable cover for Fritch when he was injured.

Even though I was not convinced by his game through the week I think Harmes comes in either way, with Viney out we need some more grunt in the midfield and Harmes can play as a HFF/tagger. He tends to Bob up for a couple of opportunities on goal as well.

Tommo really guts me, I remember Lever doing his knee early in 2018 and it gave Frost/OMac the chance to be a part of something. I’m sure that was zero comfort to Lever. Petty has to come in for him, he was poor first half against the Hawks but grew in the second half. This is his chance, TMac doesn’t go back unless we are running out of options.

I swear Sydney always seem to get us at the G when we’re weakened.

You guys do realise the reason TMac was so successful this year was because he was playing full forward. He had 2 possessions in the first half as as CHF & looked non-existent.

I hear people bringing up why he was moved from the backline while forgetting he was our main man down back. He played well down back today because he doesn’t have that to play that role anymore.

Our backline’s been elite this season. I don’t think replacing Tommo with TMac is going to change that.

Ben Brown isnt getting dropped. Its his first game back into it. Was played well by McKay and delivery was bad at times.

Right. Only Brown’s first game so cut him some slack. Also if he had not played, Fritch would have had a better opponent and probably would not have kicked 6 goals.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
