James Jordon is in the top ten in the AFL for tackles.  I think a massive part of the reason why we have improved so much is what we have been doing while the opposition have the ball.  Chasing, pressuring, tackling, keeping a great defensive shape.  He's been a big part of that and I'd hate to see him dropped.

Much prefer Sparrow over Melksham too, he's a bit of a hard nut and i reckon he'll hurt a lot of players throughout his career.

Petty for May probably the only change.  Shattered about May, we are a FAR better side with him in it.

I'd be keen to keep Brayshaw back there because as soon as B Brown is ready we'll have a selection dilemma as to who Brown replaces. McDonald to the wing as planned seems logical when  Brown comes in with Brayshaw staying in defence. It becomes a problem against a team with three tall forwards unless Hibberd plays "tall".

I'm thinking, therefore, that perhaps Hibberd comes in for May and when May returns, Jetta makes way for him.

I'm wondering why Jordon only played 56% game time. If he's run out of gas, time he was rested. Maybe Chandler for him?  

Petty has not played full back. He's either CHF or CHB.

If Tomlinson plays FB then you have to ask who provides the better balance Hibberd or Petty.

Petty offers the more upside longer term but it's not simple by any means.

Might have been injured as the 23rd player had been used for May.

Jetta has been a great member of our defence since Roosy elevated him in 2014 (so 10 years is a stretch)and reached his zenith in 2018 (last time he was in All-Australian mix).

Jaded you asked for examples from Sunday's game.

I'd have to go back and look at tape but off top of head.

Poor tackle in first term - goal Clark?

Dropped key intercept mark in last quarter - Hawkins goal.

This is on top of a very ordinary start against Greene last week.

And he again was unable to provide any drive at all from down back. 

I can cope with his low possession numbers and low tackle numbers because he usually plays in the back three and the ball often is not down there, but how many great goalsaving bits of play this year can you recite to me Jaded or DubDee.

And then there's the issue that Hibberd also generally plays in the back three, is a senior member of our side like Jetta and is a left footer who gets more involved in offence which is something we will miss with May out and Hibbo has had to wait three weeks for a game because we have been winning and the coach finally figured out the importance of loyalty.

I know the philosophy that you don't change a winning formula, but sometimes you just have to.

May's injury not only means we have lost a big, but also means we have lost one of our two key left-footers an underrated ingredient because when we kick to the Ponsford Stand end we invariably go down Langdon's AFL members wing.

The Hawks generally play three big bigs - O'Brien, Ceglar and Lewis - so Petty is required and his form pre-season and in the VFL matches has been unbelievably good.

I was a bit concerned to read Petty only played half a game for Casey last week, but was told it was to do with having a back-up 24th man for Cats. So presuming he is available, he is in - full stop. If not then Joel Smith will be required and he's fit and ready and his body is strong enough now to cope with O'Brien, leaving Lever to peel off Lewis.

Hibberd also has to come in. You don't leave quality out for too long and his left-foot is needed with May out and whilst we all love Nev for his courage and the fact that he has triumphed in adversity, he just has to make way this week.

Given Ben Brown needs another week, then the only other change is to switch our sub role - Sparrow replacing Jordon on the field at the start.

In: Petty (Smith if Petty injured), Hibberd, Sparrow (last week's sub)

Out: May (inj), Jetta, Jordon (this week's sub)

Sometimes I think you have some sort of grasp on the game, but then you say things like Spargo should be dropped. Spargo is having a fantastic season so far and is playing his role as well as anyone else.

And to suggest that this many players could be dropped "easily" in  a 4-0 team is just ludicrous.

edit: having read Lever’s comments, he says Petty played a half in the VFL. If Brown and Weed aren’t ready after a half of football, why would Petty be ready if he has only played a half.

I’d be more interested in seeing Daw given the nod to prove he has something to offer. 

He has been in the best players in all of the games so far for Casey.   He is a fantastic mark and has sticky fingers.  

Majak also has claims, as does Hibberd.

For structure though Petty will be best fit and straight swap for May.

BB and Weid are off long injury recoveries, and will need to run out 4 quarters at lesser level before they can step up.

If you don't know much about Petty, you should be pleasantly surprised seeing his game.  Will be a very good player for us!

What do people think about hibberd replacing rivers? Rivers did some great things but imo, i reckon the experience of hibberd (with may having gone down) could be valuable.

Unless there is some metrics that are alluding to Rivers being tired...I would rather him than Hibberd (not that I dislike Hibberd,). Also I would go the future for the replacement for May, and that'd comfortably be Petty.

Given that Frosty never kicked the ball to us when he played for us, I'm trying to work out whether this means he'll kick it to us now or continue the rich vein of form and continue to play keepings off.

I'm not a Melksham fan. However, he won't be dropped. I think it's more or less a selection policy that players won't be dropped after just one game back.

Agree with others that it's Petty or Hibberd for May.

I'm sure Jetts will hold his spot.

There's always room for change, even after a win. And you've mentioned but a few of the reasons why there's room.

Very few unforced changes are made to winning sides. It is a fact jimmy. 

Coaches love settled sides. Reward players that bring wins, as they should. Unchanged is an aim.

Of course there are some exceptions to that rule (most notably bringint back best 22 players), but they simply prove the rule.

And when they do make an unforced change it would be rare for it to be more than one.

Which brings me back to my question. What doesn't add up?

But it is an accurate statement about the prevailing selection philosophy of AFL coaches. 

You don't change a winning side unless forced is a maxim. One that holds true.

For good reason, because in spite of your confusion it makes sense on a number of levels (you can work it out) not to change a winning side wherever possible.

Which is why the only change this week is, RalphiusMaximus suggested,  likely to be petty for may.

And why after our previous three wins we only made one unforced change. Melksham in this week

If  RalphiusMaximus is correct, which i suspect he will be, and we don't make any unforced changes this week we will had 4 wins for a grand total of one unforced change.

So what doesn't add up? It was a genuine question. 

Are you disagreeing with RalphiusMaximus that the only change should be petty for may?

Are you arguing the philosophy of not making changes to winning sides is not agood one?

Or are you arguing that no such philosophy exists in the AFL?

I think if Jordon needs a rest, Sparrow gets his spot in the 22. IMO Sparrow earned another game with his performance after coming on. If Chandler gets Jordon's spot, in your team either Sparrow returns to being the sub or misses a spot altogether.

I am biased, because I have never once rated him, but I would like to think that in 2021 we have moved beyond Joel Smith.

We are winning in no small part because of our reliable team defence. Smith is a risk of doing the opposite. He is a Frost-esque loose cannon.

Taking the goal scoring pressure off Melksham may make him a better footballer. In other words, feeding BBB with his good kicking and running less deep into the fwdline. 

Sparrow with his tackling and intensity reminds me of AVB but with better skills and more discipline. Just needs to get more ball.

• New Sub: Daw (can play fwdline, backlind, ruck - and will scare the sheet from the Hawks.

Smokey there is no chance either Brown or the Weird will come in. Both played 2 quarters on Saturday. That is their grand match play for the year and Weid hardly got a touch.

Been thinking, there must be some niggles (injuries) occurring. We cannot be that lucky. Rest for those who carry something or need management. 

Give some young players a go when there is less pressure to perform, anymore than doing a role.

Lockhart, Bedford, Bowey, Laurie, Chandler, D. Smith, not sure about Baker (good time to find out).

No one has mentioned Hore. How is he travelling? 

Petty is listed as a forward on the MFC website. Does anyone know where he has been playing in those VFL practice matches?
