2021 NAB League Boys

One thing in our favour for Mac Andres is that clubs are unlikely to use a top 20 pick on a pure ruckman who probably won't play for a few years.  We used pick 3 on Jackson but he is seen as ruck/forward/tall midfielder.

I don't think 'the top 20' cutoff for NGA players is adjusted for Northern Academy and F/S players taken in the first round so that would help him slide to outside the top 20.

In the AFL article:  "During the upcoming recess of the NAB League competition Melbourne is expected to increase its work with Andrew, including the potential of him featuring for their VFL side Casey Demons".  early-season-blitz-puts-ruckman-on-demons-nga-radar

Good to see he gets an early start start with us.  That is partly why Sydney Academy players are ready to play in their early years.

they start the sydney academy at 12 years old to capture them as early as possible

they grow up learning the skillset to set them up for success at afl level

being a ruckman, skinny and requiring development he is unlikely to go top 20 judging on precedents. fortunately

Andrew looks an exciting prospect - it's great to see talented Sudo kids moving through the ranks.

interesting to see this all-african all australian side from the footy almanac last august: https://www.footyalmanac.com.au/almanac-teams-an-african-australian-afl-team/

i had no idea that jack darling was south african by birth

I’d be interested to see how much involvement Melbourne had in his development, probably not a great deal, so can’t really complain if he can’t be picked up on the cheap.

I have involvement on the committee of my kids’ local footy team and got an email (paraphrasing).

”Hi, I’m with St.Kilda’s NGA. Do you have any registered players that fit this criteria?” and our club isn’t even in St. Kilda’s NGA catchment zone.

Looks like they just sweep up kids already registered at junior footy and trial them for a development squad - that doesn’t seem to be encouraging new players given thy are trying to pick the eyes out of kids who had already decided to play footy.

Maybe the clubs are doing more and I haven’t seen it, but my club is in Collingwood’s NGA zone and we have a very high Asian demographic and consequently do struggle to tap into those communities for players. We have not had any involvement or assistance from Collingwood or the AFL targeting those groups to get them interested in footy and have had no junior registrations due to NGA or AFL initiatives.

NGA really does appear to be a bit of a rort.

I went to the border Albury/Wodonga a bit a few years back, basically every person I visited that had boys playing footy their kids very signed to GWS academy.

Clubs will sign anyone they get priority access to, sign 1000 and hope there is 1 they can get on the cheap.

On a side note do we still have our father/Daughter academy?

The Swans do a heap of development in their academy and are seeing massive rewards from this.  The Victorian/SA/WA have extremely limited priority access to Academy players whilst the northern states I believe still have priority access to anyone in their zone.

Interesting prospect.

Wonder what it may mean for Bradke's long term development plan if we can grab him.

Also by the time he's ready for draft, Kalani White will also be 54124cm tall based off Jeff's recent IG post.

Someone get in his ear and tell him to settle down a bit... can't go getting 20 kicks every week if he's gonna miss the first round.

So how does this work - if he doesn't go in the top 20, we just have to have enough points to cover wherever he is bid on?  And if no one bids we can take him with our last pick?

and still get the 25% points discount (or is it 20%?)

Why not ?

Is that because our first pick is in round 2. I thought we only had to match the pick with our next available or match the points.

Trust us the year we have an NGA who appears to be a serious specimen we won’t be able to take him if picked inside 20. Mac Andrew please be good, but not too good.

just our luck really, fingers crossed he slips as the year goes on, couldn't come at a better time with Majak, TMac and MBrown all the wrong side of 30 or playing like they are anyways ?

New rules. No longer allowed to match a player that goes in the Top 20.

Rucks rarely go first round.  Too much development before they can play at AFL level (doggo is the anomaly here...).  More midfielder or Kpp types go early.  So hopefully we can do a Deakin Smith with him....

Mac Andrew hasn't made the first draft board I’ve seen by twitter user @edpascoe_edps

It would be good to see him playing before coming to a view on where he might be drafted. As has already been pointed out, ruckmen rarely qualify at the pointy end of the draft unless they’re elite in that craft or have other strings to their bows (eg can also play key positions). Let’s see how his season pans out.

That bloke at selection four might be out of our reach, moneywise.

How could we possibly afford the wages of Sinn?  It might kill us.
