Kane Cornes is concerned Melbourne will let themselves off the hook this season, after key recruit Ben Brown was sidelined by injury.

Kane Corns shouldn't be too much concerned about Melbourne we have enough  goal kicking power to win games. The season proper has not started yet and BBB has time to overcome his injury and be fit enough to play  a role in the forward line sooner rather than later.  

Corns haven't you anything better to talk about ? 

 

Bit of a nothing comment from Cornes.

Our head coach won't  allow excuses this year. Goodwin is coaching for his job so either he gets a tune out of the team or he’ll be sacked.

BB injured is a disappointment, but we have depth. His injury won’t provide cover if we continue to bomb aimlessly into our forwards.

It’s such typical effing nonsensical rambling by Cornes.

He’s worried that we’ll underperform because Brown is injured, and that we’ll use the reason we’ll underperform as an excuse for why we underperform.

His brain cavity is filled with belly button lint. Should stick to firefighting.

 

Just take a peek through the Ben Brown injury thread.  He is not saying much that any of the drama queens have not bought up already.  The difference seems to be when Cornes says it though he is living on another planet.  I actually agree with him, it would be typical Melbourne to use this as an excuse to underperform.  We (imo) have a weak mental side and get distracted like moths by the little things.  I really hope we mature when it comes down to it though, many games are won lost through consistency of effort and application.  We have all heard the no excuse line thrown about...but really there are no excuses, this is just a minor setback for our clubs aspirations.

It's his schtick, it's no big deal. We don't notice what must be a dozen times a week he makes the same kind of comment about other clubs and nobody much is going to notice his comments about us.

If he were a business, he would be turnover volume oriented rather than strong margins oriented.

My personal favourite is the 'youngest and least experienced' line that gets trotted out perennially.

I actually agree with you 'jnrmac'...

We have been the Kings of excuses.

...but I don't think any excuse will be able to bail out Goody if we have another poor season.

The Prez has pretty much flagged this

Kane shouldn't be too concerned.

Agree that Cornes is a fool.

Having said that, he's paid to comment, so in the absence of any real news he has to say/write something ... even if it's just 'blah blah blah'.

Agree with other posters' comments about excuses. In 2020 MFC had a dream run with injuries and still missed the 8.

Goodwin is an excuses coach and now he has another but I doubt it will work this season. 

I cannot disagree with Cornes. But this year is a little different 

Excuses won’t save Goodwin’s job in 2021

we were going to under perform with brown so will definitely under perform without him. Whilst Goodwin is there, we aren't getting any better. People should see that by now. 

Sorry, but the words, 'Kane Cornes' and 'relevant',  do not belong in the same sentence. Who cares?

2019 is factually shown why we were poor. The number of days missed of preseason as well as games missed by best 22 players in season due to injury does not lie. How we ended up with so many needing surgery, nursed through or playing underdone and whether we had a game style and team selection that considered this is up for question. 

2020 there was no excuse. Everyone was under trying conditions. Every team  had to pivot to some extent. We had games we did not show up for. We had games where we were on. Through the swings and round abouts of it all we were not good enough to qualify for finals.

2021 I am sure will throw up challenges of varying sorts. However we have lost no one from our best 18. All other than Jones, Hibberd, Melksham and Jetta should not be in career decline. We have some 2nd -3rd year kids in Pickett, Jackson, Rivers, Petty, Spargo, Jordon, Sparrow  who should bring more quality to our 19-25 range than those we have shed. Them you possibly have a breakout of one of the three (four) newbies in Bowey, Laurie, Rosman and possibly Farmer to inject some first year energy or speed that we have historically lacked. This is before you include the value of Yze and Choco who both may be bigger recruits than Brown when he get on the field.

2021 holds no excuses.  

I would argue that the 2020 underperformance shows that all of the excuses that were offered up for 2019 were BS.  I'm skeptical as to where the improvement will come from. We still have Goodwin.  And of the kids you mentioned Rivers and Jackson are the only ones who have shown they are AFL standard. You could argue Pickett but I thought he struggled last season. Even if you include Pickett, that's 3 players that we're pinning our hopes of improvement on. All whilst having Goodwin still as coach.

DrD I found BRF's summary of 2019 and 2020 Both insightful and largely factual. Also His excellent listing of the potential of growth from our 2017,18, 19 and 20 recruits this season, and the effects of Ooze and Choco plus BBB when available.
I also am bullish about improvement from our 22-26 yo olds and would add Hunt ANB Gus Tommo Petty Fritsch plus Salem as candidates to improve our team.

Consequently your QUARTER GLASS FULL response absolutely amazes me.It completely overlooks natural improvement ( already documented in Training and Track watchers posts) plus two virtual new recruits in Petty and Brown and the already positive 2020 start at their new Club.

Yes we have been Fooled more than 40 times in the last 56 when hoping for a Finals berth and only twice played off ( very disappointingly) For our 13th Flag. That overrides many pundits and comments are therefore general and historically based. I look at each year for the Signs and potential positively and believe our list and Club are nearing  the time when all the jigsaw pieces are due to click ( In spite of Goody) and substance in our faith will be rewarded.

Lets hope this happens and surprises the sceptics!

Dont care what cornes thinks.For a long time us supporters have been in to big a hurry for success,justifiable so,but now we have group of players who are reaching the age of 25/26 for afl maturity plus older mature players and some younger blokes with ability to drive us to the success we want.Dont forget players like Jones who is at the end of his time as an afl player,who strive to go out with the reward he/they deserve.BB is not the great white god of footy .So Cornes really has no relevance to our great club just another dud scribe

Don't get me wrong,  I obviously hope for improvement but a lot of those players have regressed in their careers. they aren't 2nd or 3rd year players. I'm really excited about Trent Rivers and I'm really excited about Luke Jackson, although he is going to be wasted as a forward as he is a natural ruck. 

Petty, I'm really excited about but he is better as a forward than a defender. I acknowledge that it's only a small sample size but as a defender he looked nervous and made poor decisions. Up forward he looked great. So I see it as a shame that he isn't training as a forward. I put this down to Goodwin not being a great coach and the recruitment of Ben Brown.  But Petty is still a forward.

Salem has been at the same level for years. He is a really good player that doesn't quite get enough of the ball for my liking. He was a midfielder at the Sandringham dragons and we recruited him to play midfield but he is still just a back flanker. So I don't see how he will improve unless he adds a string to his bow and plays midfield. 

Hunt is an enigma. I actually like Hunt. But I don't (and never have liked him forward). And as a rule of thumb, if you're not a good kick for goal you shouldn't be played forward. Momentum is too big in todays game. 

Fritsch is a great player but he has consistently shown to let us down in front of goals. I like his kicking action and I believe its mostly mental at this stage so I do give him a chance to improve. 

Gus Brayshaw has had a limited pre-season and he is simply too slow to play any position other than inside mid. Goodwin seems to not understand this simple concept. If he plays as a full time inside mid then he has every chance to return back to his best otherwise, he is going to have another so-so season where he can't defend on the transition. 

Tom McDonald I think can have a big year. But it's typical of Goodwin to entertain the idea of playing him anywhere other than forward. He has built a reputation for many years as being a poor decision maker and poor user of the ball in defence. A clanger happy defender like Oscar.  Up forward, his decision making is simplified. Get ball, kick for goal. This is where he is at his best. 

I don't know why but I love it when these guys have a crack at the Dees because they're almost always wrong. 

It's when they start backing us in, that I'll worry.

Hunt kicked 10 goals 2 last year.
