Biggest single factor was Schwartz whose 3 knee recos killed his amazing agility and movement. I will go to my grave confident that given a free reign from injury David would have been just as good as Wayne Carey and 1998 and 2000 and other seasons may have turned out different!

BTW Schwartz played in the Reserves (or whatever they were called ) and showed his skill so much so that I said to my family at the time he would be our next CHF.  We know his story and still feel for him as he was virtually cut Down in his prime but bravely played on really only a shadow of that 1994 glimpse. 

Letssee what happens in the next 5 Years starting in 2021.

Is it just me or does the mobile platform of the training gallery photos fail miserably for others trying view them?

Desktop seems the only way to fully appreciate them.

Glen Swan was his name and kicked 8 goals against Geelong in 1973. Only played 13 games . In that same game Robert Flower made his debut.

Checked out the stats on that game and Diamond Jim kicked 6 goals as well

I would add Fidge to the list. I remember he kicked a bag on Silvani in a reserves final early days.

And I will add who Dave Williams. He could have been special without injury. Remember he played against Carlton one day. memory? I suspected the oldish star Blue he played on did not get him a lot of respect. One a three times Premiership player and another a no name player. Williams led and took him on a merry dance. Kicked a few but a lot of points and scoring shots later, he had likely earned some respect. Memory is hazty but think he was either left out or played out of position in a major game later on.

Warren came over from SA with Stretchy and Obber, I think. And if not for trying to patch holes at CHB and HBF could have been another wingman of the ages. But it was the time of, "just clock him" and Gary Ayres at about 20Kg heavier seemed to do do it regularly.

It was an era of seeing my favourite players Flower, Johnson and Dean who were all very light and ball players, get smashed by thug players responding to Jeans and Hafey. Still gives me the tom [censored]...

Wrong - Warren Dean was from Perth and came over the same year as Spalding and Todd Viney.

In fact Dean, Spalding and Viney came to us in 1987.  Stretch came from SA in 1986 and Obst came over in 1990.

We must have been going through a phase of recruiting players with graceful names, perhaps assuming they would play that way.

 

[As an aside, I had a cousin who played in the amos and was invited to a trial day where prospective new recruits were looked at. It was the same day as Robert Flower. My cousin told me that Flower was so obviously suitable to be recruited that they only allowed him to train for ten minutes to ensure he didn't get injured. Everyone else had a full two hour session. My cousin didn't make it but enjoyed his 200+ games in the amos].

Was he forced out early? Or retired through injury prematurely that's who I have listed not players who had a long and largely uninterrupted career.

The most disappointing thing for me is that they contain so few photos... surely the official photographer would be shooting hundreds of images, yet they only come up with 16 worth uploading?? Meh!

Interesting story - I recently watched an interview with the great Brett Lovett. He told a story about him being invited to train in pre season with Melbourne after Allan Jeans and Des Meagher had said he had no future at Hawthorn (because he couldn't run apparently - thank god they got that so so wrong) 

Anyway the interesting part was that he mentioned there were something like 80 guys running around - who were gradually cut down to a lucky few - he being one of them invited to stick around. Sounded like if you wanted to walk in off the street and have a kick there was no great drama - how things have changed

They weren't kidding when they said Rosman had 'athletic attributes'.  He looks three pre-seasons ahead of time.

Looking back over some of the other recent galleries I'm going to abandon my skepticism about Jackson's body transformation. 

Also, less decisively, but I'm got a hint of optimism now about McDonald getting back to his mobile self.  Looks a bit lighter and leaner when he appears in some photos and ina  couple of training videos.  I hesitated for a moment on that call in one photo but then I realised he was next to Jake Lever.

My memory was a combination of attitude and poor developmentt by the Club but he could certainly play.

His 1996 and 1997 seasons were write offs due to the back problems... a real shame as he was at the peak of his powers having kicked 77 and 79 goals in 94/95.

 His comeback in 1998 in Round 2 against North was one of my favorite Demon games ever.  He kicked 40 goals that season and helped us into the prelim final.

I still believe that Gary Lyon is hugely underrated by the footy world.
