I recall dropping into the first training session when Jimmy Toumpas came to the club. If memory serves the four new players were doing drills together and I reckon it was Terlich, Matt Jones and one other (maybe Georgiou?).

So Toumpas was super impressive, hitting every kick, clean hands, while the others were quite sloppy.

I thought “We’ve got one here!”...

The decision making and pressure execution on a wing is very different to back and forward. Other than starting there and drifting forward a few times in 2019,  Toms ability on a wing is as known as Rosmans’ at AFL level.

I'll back Rosman to make the grade he has so far given every reason to believe he may be the real thing!

Possibly Round 1 on the wing.

No outstanding competitor putting their hand up and please don't say Tmac.

He is needed up forward or down back (yesDrD)  If his current Pre season form continues depending upon availability or selection policy.

Its a big call to select him round 1. He would have to go very well in the praccies. One thing i liked about him when i saw him in an intra at training was his persistent presenting.  Rarely kicked to him but he did not drop his head. Just kept presenting, persevering and wanted the ball. Good sign for a 1st year player.

Took a good mark.

I can’t see many Victorian draftees playing early footy next year.  None of them have played a game of competitive footy for 16ish months. Even if they look ‘good’ my gut says the trend will be to ease them into the grade, more so than prior years. On top of that, I think Fraser played even less footy than his peers 16 months back because he was school footy only, right? 
 

edit PLUS fewer competitive pre-season hitouts than ever before. There is no way they are throwing these guys into the fire rd1.

The draft is a bit of a raffle but more so this draft because of the lack of exposed form.

Of course the missing year may have been the year he jumped up the rankings and would have gone top 10.

Bontempelli was ranked outside the top 10 as was Oliver and they both came home with a big run.

...maybe we got the steal of the draft. Some clubs will because of the circumstances.

We've all seen the cycle before  - a young kid having big expectations on them and when they don't live up to those expectations they become the new whipping boys for supporters.  Let him play first!

totally agree. unless they are tearing it apart why not start at Casey and get a few games under the belt. looks like we have just about a full list to choose from as well.

Daniel Nicholson was another who was electric on the track

I know the agenda behind the post but to suggest that James Strauss and Blease were the most impressive PS trainers you've ever seen suggests that you were just plucking out 2 names in order to antagonise. The main reason why Blease failed was because his tank was so bad that he couldn't play up the ground.

A week is a long time in footy. A year is even longer.

Unfortunately players like Laurie and Rosman have endured 2 years where they have played little football and lots of training although it did not hurt Bowey premiership player with 7 AFL games of experience which is in my opinion a credit to Williams.

Out of contract at the end of the year and nearly 2 years on he is, expectedly, very much a work in progress. We all know talls take time and he hasn't exactly had an ideal start to his career with covid interruptions to the ressies last year. With that in mind, given his height, marking ability and athletic traits I hope we keep him on for at least another year and see if he develops. Not sure has the footy IQ to play midfield/wing but should have the ability to play either end of the ground.

Given our current dearth of tall forward depth, I wonder if the best way to take advantage of his skillset is to be as high half forward lead up player?

From day one he was a ‘work in progress’. As you say Nascent, he hasn’t had an ideal start to his career, but in my view, he has definitely earned a contract extension.  Jason Taylor doesn’t get too any wrong, even with his ‘speccy’ picks.
