Hate to say it but Coll recovered from their trade period disasters.

They started with picks:  14, 16, 65, 66, 68 of any potential value.  Somehow they converted them (and their 2021 1st pick) to picks 17, 19, 23, 30, 31 and 44 (after matched picks).  And their draftees included the highly touted Macrae, Henry and Mc Innes.

Excellent pick swapping and drafting.  They did very, very well.

They also ditched r1 next year, so they get the f/s Daicos with points. Was always going to be their play, but they did get some talent in

I forgot to mention that for that future 1st (and rubbish >60+ picks) they got back two future 3rd picks as well as 4 picks in the 23 to 44 range they used last night.

They are now very well set up to cover Daicos plus target other good players in 2021.

Their swaps were exceptional.

Yes that’s why we hate them.  Especially grabbing Macrae. Was hoping he might slide to us.

Jake Bowey.  Small forward/mid.  Skilled. Evasive. Plays like Shai Bolton.

Bailey Laurie. Small half forward/mid. Smart. Skilled.  Plays like Brent Daniels.

Fraser Rosman. Wing/half forward. Athlete. Quick. Xfactor.  Plays like Isaac Smith.

They traded a future 1st and 2nd AFAIK.

We had plenty of options at 21 & 22 and I like what we went for - ZIP!!!! Exactly what we needed. Don’t see these guys as small forwards in the Kozzie mould at all. Will add to our mix around the midfield/wing. And both look excellent kicks. I like this very much.

I don't know...I'm not overly excited.

I never like the idea of drafting needs.

I agree, looks like we have taken natural footballers with the skill set and agility we need with our first 2 picks and then the raw Athlete with our third pick.

Watching the draft, what a long boring watch it was.  Clubs should have 2 minutes, get through the round then do a summary of players.  Top 5 have the profile and interview after that get this moving faster.

We recruited exactly what we needed.

We missed  out on Isaac Smith and Saad, so we picked up young versions of these players.

Bowey - like Saad but looks a better kick

Rosman - like Smith but taller

Laurie- reminds me a lot of Milne , clever up forward around packs (another need)

I'm with you on this one.

Given the hand-wringing over Geelong jumping in on Holmes what are the chances Rosman was our target all along and we simply let the Holmes talk run. Three other clubs were linked to Holmes as well.

Was Rosman our smokie that we protected with a Holmes screen?

I know, a very un-Demonland thought but while they do share similarities Rosman looks to have the more mature build.

ESPN gave our draft a rating of ‘C’.

Looks like they were playing favourites and can’t get a handle on what we achieved.  They should rate trade plus draft together.  Did we improve our list?  I think we did.  My only concern is the lack of r1 next year to get essentially 2 early second rounders this year.

The ESPN guy is Knightmare, who is a Collingwood supporter on BigFooty. He puts in a huge amount of work which is of value, but he isn't a professional recruiter. He's just rating teams against what what his ratings were, but his ratings are usually just the exposed, high production players rather than those that require a bit more development (or those who are less exposed). I wouldn't take the ratings too seriously, as nobody knows how well everyone went because everyone has different players they rate ..... just look at the AFL article about who recruiters rated as number 1 pick!

We whinge and moan all year about not having anyone who can kick teh ball and no pace.. we go and get one and then we still find reason to do the same.

Its a needs selection, smart selection, as is Laurie and even Rosman. They are what we need. We didnt need Carroll, or we didnt need Cook, we have those types, we dont have Bowey or Laurie types.

Drafting for the now, as they should, the window is open for us, these guys get it an kick it nicely, read the play well, are clever, have some pace, and can play through midfield, wing or fwd line.

Its a really good haul for 3 picks.

Their pick swapping was very well done. For the hand they started with, they were easily the biggest winners of draft night. They upgraded picks, got real talent in before the Mcinnes bid, and moved back next year with future picks to secure Daicos with lesser picks. Pretty much a perfect draft from them. Very frustrating to watch!

I think that's exactly right. The Holmes 'interest' was a red herring.

I'm not so convinced. Their draft haul for this year and next is now limited to Daicos, what they got last night and then very late picks.

I really like Macrae and Henry/McInnes are interesting, but they haven't landed any true key position players (a stated aim of the trades) nor have they replaced Stephenson with inside 50 pace and crumbing. They've restocked their midfield and flanker depth but they were already very strong in that area.

Like the Dogs this year, the massive advantage of having a NGA/FS that is top end talent.  When you know you will most likely lose your R1 and 2 pick next due to having priority access to a player you may as well move those picks on to get something.  Funny that Eddie was the most outspoken on the Academies and they have benefited the last 2 drafts plus you add in the F/S they have added as well.

I think we get too attached to players that are potentially coming to us through someone's Phantom Drafts.

Jason Taylor has the runs on the board, and if the club feel these are the players we need at our club moving forward, then I'll back that.

To be honest though I'm pretty ambivalent to it all right now.  As a supporter I want to get behind them as much as possible and give them the chance to develop and work their way into our side.  Too much water to go under the bridge yet - let's see what they're doing in 2023/24.

Isaac Smith wishes he was as athletic and could take a grab like the Ros Man

Fraser Rosman -  Plays like Adam Goodes

Good get by the Crows to get local lad Cook. He looks a real talent and I’m annoyed we passed on him with earlier picks when he was still available. He’s quicker than both the guys we drafted and kicks more goals too.

I felt the same... but apparently the knock on him is his kicking - not terrible but not consistent.  Seemingly elite kicking was a non-negotiable for our first two picks

It’s a raffle. Who knows how they will go.

We do seem to have quite a number on the list 180cm or less. Not sure of the balance.

Yep - elite kicking and elite decision making. Goes to the game plan. Ben Brown's going to be charging at these two, and they need the skill to hit him on that lead.

I agree D3, and we now have both fitness and development gurus to bring them along.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
