Unpopular Opinions - Melbourne FC Edition

News is slow this time of year so I thought this could make an interesting thread.

I'll start;

Joel Smith is already a handy defender, particularly in 1 v 1's, and will develop into a really good lock down KPB

Not sure it’s ‘unpopular’ but Petracca’s breakout year was purely positional change not fitness

It's not that it's unpopular, he just can't play, he has no idea how to play football

Spargo would be more highly rated by Dees fans if he didn't look like the kid who always got picked on in school.

Should have kept Oscar McDonald.

Gawny is a great footballer, even better bloke, should not be captain.

Tom Scully has been unfairly maligned by the Dees faithful for long enough. I think it’s time to forgive and forget!

He had big first quarters on ball then was done by half time in previous years. The shorter quarters helped, but the fitness was more about him doing it in the midfield for longer - and earning the coaches trust to do so.

Jones was meant to be the right man to captain until he wasn’t. Viney the same. Gawn even more so. I feel like it’s May at the moment.

Either the captaincy is cursed or there’s not the right leaders and culture at the club to get people to elevate themselves.

Cotchin completely changed his playing style and leadership. Hopefully Gawn can do the same.

Jake Gyllenhaal No GIF

Oscar McDonald was good.

Captains at Melbourne are constantly undermined by a culture (emanating from the supporters most of all) that is constantly looking for magic beans rather than commitment and hard work.

Just to be clear. I saw DZ’s original post about Joel Smith being a decent defender so I’ve assumed this is an ironic thread.

Paul Roos let us down.

Left with the job not even half done.

Made too many short term moves. Wasted two years with an awful one way defensive game plan that didn’t provide any value when Goodwin took over with a modern attacking game plan. This was the first year we’ve strived to both attack and defend at the same time.

Also left Goodwin to deal with Watts and Hogan when they should’ve been his number 1 priorities.

The club didn’t secure the right CEO and didn’t get an experienced head of footy.

The list build switched far too quick in to trying to plug holes rather than trying to add talent. Glen Bartlett can talk all he likes about the list management strategy but I don’t believe there really is one.

Haha yeah no worries, to be honest my reply is the same no matter if you were being ironic or serious

Josh Mahoney has an unhealthy habit of being bent over after the footy season finishes.

Pert had really taken over from PJ and pushed us further ahead.

Vanders not only makes his team mates “walk taller” he is damaging with the ball in hand.

The supporters are not to blame for the trials and tribulations of the footy team.

Whoo!

How about unbeatable one on one and arguably  our best player for the last 50 years along with R.Flower?

Weideman will have a breakout year.

AvB and Melksham were gifted games last year, both should've been dropped several times and seemed to be played on form in previous years rather than in season form/merit.

Id still take Watts with the number 1 pick.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
