Gonna be funny watching this topic tonight. Four suicides three heart attacks and a couple of marriage breakdowns, and that's just gonna be the over sixties.

    I think this is worth considering - at least for next year over the summer.

    Weid struggles to stick contested marks but that's not going to be an issue down back - just needs to neutralise the contest. He can learn the trade from May and Lever. He's a very good kick and his groundball handling and handballing are good.

    It would solve a heap of list management problems if Weid could make it as a KPB and Petty as a KPF.

    Sammy has all the tools to be a gun full forward that kicks a lot of goals. The problem is his mentality. It’s a combination of lack of confidence mixed with being scared of contact. There was multiple times tonight he could’ve at least impacted the contest but chose to either stand by the side or hide behind the contest. I vividly remember one incident where the ball was bombed to half forward, he was running backwards & although he didn’t have much of a chance of marking it, there was a chance he could’ve at least put some pressure on the dogs defender but he saw another player in the corner of his eye heading towards him & he immediately gave up so he couldn’t get hurt.

    I hope the coaches show him some of this footage & he changes his ways otherwise he’s going to be a consistent fringe player for this side.

    Sam looked the goods in the first Q, but I must say I didn't see him on the ground after that.  Are TOG per quarter stats available anywhere?

    Was our best forward tonight and kicked 3 goals. Good to see a tall forward actually lead at the ball carrier for once. Well done Weid.

    Pretty sure Fritsch was better. 

    Weid started well. But then for 3/4’s all he managed was one lead and goal.

    No competitiveness under a string of high balls. In fact barely got near most of them. 

    Whether it’s athleticism, strength, courage or reading of the flight he just doesn’t have it and likely never will.

    He was certainly better on the lead but after Q time we reverted to mainly bombing it long into F 50.

    So why on earth does a key forward need to spend that amount of time on the bench for goodness sake?

    He's our only key forward of the night and Goody sees fit to keep him on the bench for for 30% of the night. 

    So realistically going off this, we were just bombing it on Fritsch head half the time while Weid just sat on the Bench... Bizarre coaching really.

    In comparison Harry McKay averages over 90% TOG this year.

    Had pretty solid 1st and 3rd quarters. But I don't think he touched it in the other two. 

    Once again he leaves me confused, because I don't see the specific thing he does wrong consistently. At his worst it seems that he is useless in pack type situations, not competing, no body work etc.

    But most games there are at least a couple of situations where he does great work in the packs, hitting them hard, splitting them, bullocking the follow up, scooping the ball and fishing a handball, or floating across dangerously.

    His lead up work is perfect when on song. But then oftentimes he'll just be standing still, hands in the air, no movement.

    So he can do it, but just doesn't most of the time for some reason. I can't pinpoint it.

     

    Still, 3 goals and 2 direct score assists is a decent output.

    Agree bizarre, considering his very good first quarter and the obvious need for a tall down forward especially in the last half of the last quarter (is that the last eighth?).

    The 1st goal he kicked was symptomatic of how he plays. He was out of position to contest that mark but was fortunate that Dale slightly boxed him out. He was never going to get to that contest. 

    If his only strength is marking on the lead, then he's at the wrong club, because that's not how we play.

    It's ingrained in our mids to go long to a contest. It worked last year, especially in the G/F, and for the 1st half tonight, it worked also. But when you are only playing with 1 kpf and 2 resting ruckmen who are giving us nothing up forward, surely you have to change things up occasionally.

    Said he'd kick 3 in the gameday thread, had we won I would have gloated a lot more about it.

    Put in a decent first half before being nowhere to be seen in the second.

    Gawn 92%
    Weid 72%
    Jackson 69%
    Melk 80
    Fritsch 87

    That adds up to always having at least 1 tall forward and 2 mediums. Or 2 talls for 30%.

    Given the dogs don’t have dominant marking talls we could easily compete with mediums who provide better movement and defensive pressure.

    Big Harry chases, tackles and hits up on the lead as well as halving long contests.

    Keeping Weid’s game time low should’ve allowed him to give maximum effort per minute, and be fresh to be powerful in his attack on the ball. Sadly that wasn’t the case

    Hes been shown many times already, goody even called it out in a press conference ... just doesn't want to impact each contest ... unfortunately we have to accept that he is a soft nice player with amazing talent  ... and won't change

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

      What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
