tiers 2,883 Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 Weid did what he had to do - he contested hard in the ruck. Goody made the sage comment that although was lost the tap count by 40 we won the clearances by 5. Admittedly that is mostly due to Tracca, Clarry and Viney but without Weid's constant challenges it could have been much worse. 2 1 Quote
Sydee 4,684 Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 The most encouraging element of his game for me was the fact he looked genuinely upset when he gave away the free kick to Walker - Sam needs to play with more passion imo he just seems to drift through games Quote

But in the longer term he needs to be able to do more in some role. Presumably/hopefully somewhere there is a big bodied back-up ruck available in 2023 (Daw Mark II) who could ruck better? 1 Quote
Dante 2,739 Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 Two things. Weid lacks balance and core strength. He falls over or slips on numerous occasions and is pushed out of the way by smaller players. I'm not sure if he has ever had a course in Pilates but it may help both issues, particularly his core strength, I remember Andrew Leoncelli was involved in Pilates and he went ok and was very strong in the contest. There is no doubting that we want him to succeed and I'm sure that it's not for lack of trying that he's not, in fact I think there's so much pressure on him he tries too hard. Quote

How many times does he run too hard and almost slip back onto his butt in a marking contest? It's a joke Edited July 4, 2022 by layzie Quote

If there's one thing I want from him all game long is to hit every pack and contest in the air, I'm not fussed with marks, kicks, goals or even hitouts right now. We just need him to be a presence and if that is happening he'll chip in with some of the other stuff. These marking contests where he gets caught under it and loses balance or the number of 'nearly marks' he has. If he just clunks 1 or 2 more per game that may be enough. 4 Quote
MrFreeze 2,055 Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 In a season where our talls have been injured, suspended and smacked around. Weid (and our other 2nd string talls) have stood up to keep the team afloat. He is similar to Tomlinson, high draft pick, probably has little development left but can fill a spot and is reliable and consistent when called up. I'd love for him to be kicking bags, clunking marks and roaming the f50 but if his career ends up being apart of the supporting cast in the best team in the league, that's not too bad. 3 Quote

Hatchman 539 Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 Despite him signing I think we should trade Sam this year while he still has currency. He's been with us for a long time but he still cannot take a contested mark to save himself and he gets bodied off the ball too much. He is a nice kick for goal, however. He's one of those players that is just a little too good for VFL, but not good enough for AFL, he'd have better luck at a club that is struggling. Quote

If we don't off load him then , the way our forward line os going, MFC will be a" club that is struggling". 7 years is surely long enough to work out whether he can hold down a spot. It's not as if MFC has had champion full forwards keeping him out of the team Edited July 11, 2022 by IRW Spelling 1 Quote

I would be shocked if Collingwood has any interest in him. They need a reliable forward target. Sam is a pretty good vfl player / he isn’t on any afl teams’ shopping lists. Sad realisation because like many on here I really like the bloke but the reality is - barring a miracle - he isn’t going to cut it at the top level. Quote

Tend to agree with your summation, doubt whether Collingwood would have any interest but you never know. Unfortunate but thats footy! 1 Quote
wisedog 352 Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 I think one of the reasons we hold out hope for Sam were his performances at the end of 2018 season - the finals in particular. Elimination final against the Cats is by far his best game. 24 disposals, 7 marks, 3 goals, 4 tackles, 1 HO He’s athletic and mobile and comfortable playing up the ground. IF Luke Jackson is to leave, perhaps Weidemann serves the club best by working on his ruck craft over the Summer and taking over this role. Given Gawn’s recent comments about his best position being a ruck/forward it’s probably his best opportunity to extend his career in a meaningful way. I like Sam. The way the players talk about him suggest he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body - and perhaps that’s part of the problem. 2 Quote

With Daw, Mitch Brown and Jackson all gone or likely gone, Ben Brown and TMac a bit of a worry with injury/age, I reckon Weid stays for his second year purely out of necessity. Even this year with those players all still around he's played 8 games, so not sure we have the depth to trade him at this stage. 3 Quote

He'll only go to another club if that club shows genuine interest and feels it's a much better fit. Our forward depth will be tested next year, and Weideman will need to be kept on the list. I do wonder whether we'll add a delisted free agent insurance for a ruckman or key forward for further depth. 1 Quote
