Farewell Sam Weideman

Maxy just made an interesting comment on the Gus & Gawny podcast in regards to Weid.

He said "I'm not the match committee, but I think that's his best position, Ruck/Forward".

A fairly subtle statement, but I think it reads really truthfully, especially coming from a team mate.

Actually agree with Max on this (at least at this stage) - it forces Weid to get involved and get a bit more physical

I'd still like to see a combo of Weid and LJ in ruck and Max 80% in F50 as the key tall - especially if BBB is not performing

Played a great role in Gawn's absence.  His handpasses from congestion seemed to all start an attacking move.  But needs to hold some marks in the 50 to keep his  place when Gawn returns.

That's always been his problem.

I think he was OK last week, and that's about all he will be for the remainder of his career.

If he could just convert his set shots........

If he could just believe and play with more ...presence like..  Tom Hawkins.. He would then also kick more goals!

Huge week for Sam!

I always thought Hawkins was rubbish until a couple of years ago so I guess the Weid has a few years before I should pass my final judgement

‘If this player could be a wholly different player, it would make all the difference…’

Sadly it just ain’t happening for him

he's doing the best he can and is competing in the air at ground level

he gives up nearly 3 inches to windscreens o'brien who is a very, very good ruckman

Gutsy performance from him to shoulder that load tonight.

Pathetic effort from fans to jump on here and bag him out straight away.

His last Quarter was much better

Good effort going up against the big man. All we ask for is Sam competes and tonight he did that. It’s not an easy role. We have no one else to do it. He performed to an acceptable level. It’s all we can ask.

Like many others, I have my doubts about Sam's long-term future. He does seem to be stuck at a level somewhere between the VFL and AFL. But cut him  some slack tonight. Asked to play a role for which he is not really suited he did his best. You can't ask for more.

Can’t judge him at all on tonight’s performance.  Was asked to play first ruck against one of the best in the league.

Good on him.

The best we can hope for is for him to provide a contest, he did that for most of the game. Taking a few marks would help substantially.

I love the Weed, he’s been like a father to the young group.

Just requires a run of games, to gain confidence.

No strength, lack competitive killer instinct  and to slow, yes he tries hard and seems a lovely fella but it’s highly doubtful he will ever impact AFL level consistently from what we have seen over many years.

That is all he had to do

Which he had a lot of trouble doing in the first half. He needs to put his body into the contest more, which to his credit was much better in the latter part of the game.

I’m in @old dee’s camp.

Weed battled well against a bloke with six centimetres and a fair few kilos on him in a position he normally doesn’t play. My hat goes off to him.

One he starts one grab marking and attacking packs with vigor, he is a regular selection.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.

  • REPORT: Richmond

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
