One further comment I heard was that MFC are in this as a long game. What they are doing this off season will be part of a much longer term strategy that is in place for the next few seasons.

Just curious if you can explain the long game part at all. Does this mean where trying to free up salary cap space and target free agents or looking at bringing in more draft picks? Given the club has been so bullish on our list over the last 18 months, I am interested in what this plan is.

I guess we could infer a couple of different long games here:

- Positioning ourselves for a strong 2021 and 2022 draft (always a good strategy, but surely secondary to finals in those years)

- Positioning ourselves for the expected list and salary cap decreases over the next 2-3 years to avoid a Collingwood type cap crunch or a GC type list crunch while also doing the following:

--- Positioning ourselves to re-sign Oliver and other OOC players through trade moves now (definitely makes sense)

--- Positioning ourselves to recruit (by FA or trade) certain targets at the end of 2021 (very realistic given i) we need to have the money and picks to do it, ii) that those players will probably improve our chances in 2022 more than kids we draft next week, and iii) these things seem to start planning a few years out).

We have been very smart operators in list management recently.  We haven't lost players who we didn't open the door for. We have targeted recruits a long way out. The concept of a 3 year trade and draft strategy is something I hope and expect we have, but there are obviously some clubs who don't.

With the looming cap and list crunches and the aging of Geelong, WC Collingwood and even PA lists, there is much to be said for making sure we are ready to grab the opportunity as it presents in 2021-2023 rather than selling the farm for 2021. Obviously this is reliant on believing we have a relatively atrong core list which is capable of competing, which the club seems to believe.

So much for that... He's just been traded. He knows nothing.

Edit: While yes, there was a stalemate between the clubs last night, to state that "they ain't even close" is what I'm referencing.

Hopefully Talia not going to bombers will mean that rekindle interest in T Mac to play back.  swap for Philips?

Yep

I think clubs are trying not to cut too hard but there will be some tough decisions made.

As public as Collingwood have been and to a lesser extent the Dees with TMac i reckon all clubs are carrying some sort of bad contract and are looking to cull as much TPP as possible.

Interestingly trade news has mentioned TMac as still a huge chance of moving. I personally don't see it happening but we will wait and see.

I trust @CHF info, i reckon the dees are restructuring TPP and we will see some tough decisions made in the short term.

i think we will feel a lot more freedom next year - especially if we shed tmac this year.

Jones, Jetta, KK, vanders, nibbler, smith, mbrown would all be looking less likely than not to be around in '22 and then u shed any of nieta, chandler, bedford, jordon, lockhart, hore that don't make the grade next year and suddenly we've got plenty of wriggle room

How does 2-3 plodders that would maybe cost 300-400k a piece make us any better when you can go hard for 2 star players that make us immediately better in areas we're clearly most deficient in (Whitfield - wing/hbf, Kelly - wing/outside mid). We're not as light on for depth as you might think, but we lack the match winning players in those areas.

AD sorry it's our depth that Boston us this year All our top players performed well over the board

Uts the first season I reckon We can say we have 4 A graders and about 3 B graders plus around 7:8 B- it young developing players.

But the ANB AVB Oscar Hannan Jetta( sadly) and maybe Hunt Jones and Smith that are not any where near better than 2018 and We have few forward  flankers who are up to consistent Form.

Spargo has improved but still needs to contribute mor not just on good days!

Not a rumour but a feeling, that we must have more targets than just BB.  With teams that have improved like Saints and Blues grabbing everyone in sight, it would be interesting if we have only targeted one player.

If we get only BB and he doesn’t perform, it won’t  be a great trade period for us. If he does,  then it could be a very good one.

I am still hopeful of Phillips, the Pies’ one, to help fix a wing and also another pick upgrade.

You'd think so. If it's true that we haven't offered North a 2nd round pick yet then that makes it highly probable that those picks are being targeted for trade; would be surprised if Taylor wanted all of them for this year's draft.

just mentioned that melb will offer the kangas a 2nd round pick and a switch of later picks.

Hopefully its either 31 or 33 and switch of picks, rather than 26

David Noble looks like getting the North gig

An integral part of the Brisbane rebuild which will be great for North.

Played a few games for the old Fitzroy (in Roos' time).  Coached Glenelg in his own right for a few years.

A really solid background with maturity so a much better bet than a first time 'rookie' senior coach who has to learn on the job.

If I was a north supporter I would be happy with his appointment.

Good pick up by North if true.

Apparently a really good football person and might be another Fagan success story.

Hope he doesn’t try and turn BB around.

Typical in football circles is to copy what has been done elsewhere.

The flavour of the month theory.

There is very little innovative thinking in football unfortunately.

Coaching appointments mirror this...

I don't know anything about Noble but because it worked for Fagan doesn't mean it will for North & Noble.

Given I wish every other club in the competition to fall apart...let me say I hope this doesn't work.

The clock's against him.

Might only take a phone call with a new offer and expression of admiration for him and a reborn future at his club.

If true and involving this years draft only then pick 33 and pick 69 for Brown and pick 81 would be ideal.

Given how he was treated by North, I think it would take a miracle rather than a phone call.  He's checked out  - it's nearly impossible to turn that ship around.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
