Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2021 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch

TRIGON

Recommended Posts

I’m not certain whether this has been mentioned or not but a bigfooty poster Davo-27 has an interesting perspective on the draft. He ranks players in tiers starting with the elite tier and going down:-

Elite: Daicos, Horne-Francis, (Callaghan, Darcy) (4)

Top Tier: Hobbs, Erasmus, Ward, Goater, Amiss, Fahey, Van Rooyen, Wanganeen-Milera, M Johnson, Rachele (10)

Quality: Roberts, Sinn, Long, Knevitt, Bazzo, Gibcus, Andrew, Chesser, Conway, Banks, MacDonald, Browne, Draper, Sonsie, Wilmot, Dittmar, Clarke, Curtis (18)

Quality with some question marks: Molan, Windhager, Ferres, Hough, Aleer, Regan, Brown, Soligo, Owens, Jones, Tunstill, Lohmann, Taylor, Benning, C.Hamilton, Beecken, Rankin, Burgoyne, Jackson, Uwland, Motlop, Rayson, Archer, Willis, Sheldrick, Dib, Williams, Murray, Rossimel, H.Hamilton, Butler, Bergman, Howes, (19 yr olds) Doultree, Trudgeon, Cleary, Gribble (37)

This is a good way to look at the overall list of players - there will be some players missing and some disagreements about how high or low players should be ranked but I think it’s a different way to look at the players available to be drafted.

Some absolute guns within this group. Horne-Francis, Daicos, Callaghan & Hobbs.

Chesser is probably one in the frame for the Dees 1st pick.

Connor Macdonald is another impressive midfielder with versatility and might go earlier than expected.

According to Cal Twomey Cats are favourites to get pick 23 of the dogs. I wonder will we get involved in that deal or try to trade with bulldogs for ones of the picks they get off the Cats. The Cats have 3 picks in the 30,s. Picks 30,32 and 34.

November latest: The first-round interest in Howes is growing and the Demons are a genuine chance with their first pick. Melbourne has also officially nominated Woewodin as a father-son prospect but where will a bid come? If no rival club calls his name out, the son of Brownlow Medallist Shane will automatically join the club’s rookie list.

The AFL’s talent ambassador Kevin “Shifter” Sheahan has filed his list of top draft prospects.

Kevin Sheehan's top 40 draft prospects: Who has traits like the Bont?

it’s a good read. Shifter is a legend in analysis of youngsters and of the draft going back probably 25+ years now.

Some notable call outs

Finn Callaghan. Player comparison the Bont

Neil Erasmus. Player comparison Christian Petracca.

yes I can see it but it’s a huge call.

Loved that Shifter has referenced lots of Dees players in his player comparisons.
Erasmus >Petracca.  Gibcus> Lever.  Bazzo > May. Cooper Hamilton > Rivers. Andrew > Dogga.
Sinn > Salem. Sheldrick > Viney.

Mentioned elsewhere on Demonland is Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft.

Cal Twomey's 2021 Phantom AFL Draft: Top 30, late picks, club whispers

Highlights for Melbourne are that he believes that the club will select Blake Howes of the Sandringham Dragons and, his “whispers” for the rest are -

“A father-son is set to land at Melbourne for the first time since 2014 with Taj Woewodin nominated as a national pick, meaning if a bid doesn't come for the son of 2000 Brownlow medallist Shane then the Dees can automatically grab Woewodin with their last live selection. That appears the most likely outcome, with a bid not expected before Melbourne's third pick. Dandenong Stingrays forward/midfielder Judson Clarke could still be on the board at No.37 while the Dees have nominated Andy Moniz-Wakefield, an outside runner, through their Next Generation Academy and he could be a rookie shot. As could Anthony Caminiti, a 198cm forward who kicked five goals in his NAB League debut for the Northern Knights.”

The way I have read it is we only have 3 picks maybe Howes, Clarke and definitely Woewodin then we have a rookie b category in Moniz-Wakefield and we may rookie Caminiti.

Shifter has never seen a bad player so I don't take much notice of him.

This is Chris Doerre’s Phantom Draft

Every club, every pick: ESPN's full AFL phantom draft

You may call me a cynic but it does help your accuracy to be second, a day after Cal Twomey.

Doerre has gone on record as saying that he doesn’t rate Chesser.

He’s also indicating that Melbourne will only draft 2 players plus Taj Woewodin.

I noticed that, yet he now has Chesser as a first rounder going to us at #17.  Major change of heart by 'Knightmare'.

I wouldnt be concerned if I was Chesser, Doerre is the second worst judge of football talent who regularly comments on the subject!

His phantom drafts (Chesser@ 17) is what he expects to happen, his power rankings where he doesn’t include Chesser are just his overall ranking of talent

I guess that says a lot about his assessment of talent:  Knightmare doesn't rate him in the top 50 ranking, yet recruiters have him in the top 20.  Hmmm...

He’s dramatically downgraded Chesser right out of the park in his power rankings because he claimed he hadn’t seen enough of his output. Yet, he upgraded Mac Andrew to top 20 in his power rankings on the strength of one so so quarter for the Academy after earlier stating that the “team got pumped by 100+ points. I wouldn't read too much into anyone's performances”. He also incorrectly claimed back in early May that Andrew weighed nearly 80k (he’s still 74kg today). There’s lots more this year. Still, he’s entitled to his opinions but I wish he expressed them consistently.

Here’s his latest power rankings -

He also famously said Clayton Oliver and Luke Jackson were not worthy of first round picks. His knowledge of football is very poor.

Just because you spend time doing something doesn't mean you are good at it.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
