Seemed either a tad disinterested this season or has lost confidence after his injuries. Started his career like a potential superstar so has the ability.  Would have him at the Dees in a heartbeat.

Reportedly paying 700k for Cerra.

Salary cap doesn't exist at Carlton?

Visy brown paper bags still running the place.

Perhaps we haven't heard anything about us because of finals but I suspect this year was all about player retention and we'll play little part in the trade period.

We will have some cash freed up post the McDonald and Brayshaw contracts expiring at the end of next year as well as Hibberd, Melksham, Jetta, Jones and AvB all not likely to be on the list come 2023.

Jackson and Oliver are the priority re-signings come 2022 and 2023 respectively but with some good accounting and trading into the future draft pool we can probably make a significant play for a high profile player. Ben King anyone?

Money isn't the only reason Cerra would target Carlton. Despite how they look right now, they have one of the best cores in the league. It'll turn quickly and he, Walsh and Cripps, supported by Ed Curnow is a pretty decent, if lacking in support, midfield.

And are about to be “coached” by Ross Lyon?

Not to mention the bookends of Weitering and McKay would be the envy of nearly every team.

I must be missing something here. Watching a lot of Carlton games their foot skills are terrible. They have no depth in their midfield. Cripps is banged up, Saad and Williams aren't mids. Jones will be 31 next year, who else is going to hold down a key defensive post? Casboult & Betts are gone, McGovern will never be any good, so their forward is nothing to get excited about. Anyway happy to be proven wrong, and time will tell but I don't see them being a threat for the next 5 years.

Their forwardline is nothing to get excited by? If McKay and Curnow can stay fit, they're easily a top 3 pairing of KPFs in the league.

What is so great is that this year I have a skim of this thread every now and then…but I’m honestly not that interested. Usually by this time of year this is my go to thread. This year I’m interested in something a lot more important- The Flag!

Not too bothered about trade. The footy department will take care of it in a professional manner…saying that seems strange also

The interesting thing for us is what we do with Jones, Jetta, Hibberd, Melksham and Mitch Brown this year. There's some reasonable money tied up here. There may be scope for a strategic poach like we did with Langdon.

There's also the question whether the Weed wants to stay. He definitely has currency.

From a list management point of view we also need to plan for life after the likes of TMac, May, Vanders, Max, Tomlinson and Ben Brown.

Also decide whether Chandler, Lockhart, Bedford, Hore, Baker, Bradke, etc are going to make it.

Left field but I wouldn’t mind seeing us have a crack at Max Holmes. We wanted him before last years draft only for Geelong to trade out there 2021 first rounder to snare him a pick before us.

I thought he looked the goods last weekend, at one point sprinted between 3 contests along the wing to keep the dees under pressure. Nothing would give me more pleasure then seeing us tempt him to request a trade to the dees after 1 year at the cats.

I have been pleased that Holmes has looked completely average in his games so far for Cats seeing that they out bid fir him at the Draft.

No real reason to worry now but of course time can be important with young draftees!

Claims on BigFooty (take with grain of salt) that Elliot Yeo wants out of West Coast, if there is even a glimmer of truth to that we should be on the phone

From what i've heard it's not so much Yeo wanting out of Meth Coast, and it's more Meth Coast having a look at what senior players have some currancy to start a re-build

WCE have big Salary Cap issues they tried to top up to win a flag but they now realise that their list is aging with not much coming through.  Yeo is the last bloke they can afford to get rid off he is the bloke that wins his own footy and has some heart.  Gaff, Shuey, Sheed just want easy football

Stole this from bigfooty.

Sam Edmund just said on SEN trade radio that “Melbourne and a number of other clubs have enquired about Brayden Maynard” … “He’s refused to sign an extension at Collingwood until he knows who the new coach is going to be, which others clubs are smelling as blood in the water” … “They reckon he’s gettable”.

I like Maynard and he would make us better. However I would rather use whatever space is left in the cap or draft position to target a mid. I think it is a bigger priority for us

Maynard slots into the backline = Rivers becomes your mid with great run, carry, and ball use (I'd be using him on the inside though).

Solves both our problems.

Weid straight swap for Maynard?

Interesting. Points to weigh up:

  • Age Profile: similar (10-months apart)
  • Form: Maynard consistent, Weideman down on confidence.
  • Role Played: HBF relatively plentiful, KPF relatively rare.

I rate Maynard quite highly as a player, however I'd be more inclined to back ourselves and Weideman by keeping him and offering a future first rounder for Maynard - maybe with later round picks swaps to sweeten the deal for us.

Re Weideman as a standalone proposition, if North or Gold Coast come bidding hard for him with juicy draft picks then that's a different matter.

Ha if only.

Best case scenario I think is something like

Weid + 2nd rounder + 3rd rounder

With the picks purely used as points for Daicos

Hopefully North go in for Weid and give us a 2nd rounder. That way we can have a crack for Mac Andrew.

Gut feel is the club would like to keep Weid given the ages of TMac and Brown, but given the last couple of weeks (non-selection) I think maybe he's told them he'd like to go elsewhere for more consistent opportunity.

How? Weid can’t get a game and out of contact.

Maynard has a year left to run.

While I maintain Weid’s upside is good, Maynard is the more valuable

No doubt Maynard is a better player, but it's not as black and white as that.

Unless Clarko goes to Collingwood Maynard will request a trade out IMO. Pies will be happy in a way due to their salary cap. They are also very keen on key forwards and despite Weid having an inconsistent year he's still seen as talented and yet to hit his peak.

To suggest Weid's value in the context would require a 2nd and 3rd round picked added to a trade for Maynard is a bit silly.

I'd be genuinely staggered if it was a straight swap.

I'd be doing cartwheels down the street on the way to Tim Lamb's house to drop off a slab type of surprised.

But I hope you're right!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
