I actually had the thought last night watching the laziness of Bailey Smith's kicking that he might be gettable after that performance. He's soft, but he's usually a good user, has toe, is the sort that would be nice to add at half forward, rotate on a wing and roll through the midfield.

Smith is a figjam, but I can't stand Hunter even more, so maybe I'm biased, but would prefer Smith, who has age on his side too. Hunter wanted big dollars at his last contract. I wonder if the good East Malvern Knight would be up for a seachange?

Dogs fans talk about Smith like Melbourne fans talk about Harmes. Would be interesting to see them both in the same side haha

I don’t think we’ll have a stack of dollars to throw around recruitment wise. If we could get North to pay half of Polecs contract - he’d fill a need for us on the other wing. Currently we only have Langdon as a winger, another is needed. Polec is a quality player down on form and confidence. He is the type who could immediately come in and make a difference.

He missed 4 or 5 simple targets, under little pressure. Bevo made note of this in his press conference. He didn't specifically mention Smith, but alluded to it.

Pendles has said he could step away from Collingwood if another club offered him a contract that included a move in to coaching.

Would he get a game with us, and would he want to come and try to win another flag?

Haven't kept tabs on Collingwood or pendles this year but I'm of the view that we're short at least one more reliable A-grade midfielder. Someone with experience and leadership would be fantastic for this group, not sure if that's pendles but I'd be looking at him as a possibility as well as Cunnington and Parker. The lure of a premiership before retirement may persuade free agents to come across at a lesser premium.

Beyond Oliver and Petracca we have Viney, Harmes, Sparrow and Jordon as our rotating mids and all with various shortcomings . Brayshaw seemingly not trusted in this position anymore.

Could he do a Jordan Lewis and leave for the team he barracked for as a youngster? (I think I remember hearing that?). He and Maynard would be great depth!

We need a really good user of the footy. Someone like Kelly, Merrett, Amon.

Sydney have a few. Dawson comes to mind. I personally don’t mind Polec on a wing, he is a hard runner, had X factor, and probably wants out. Wouldn’t cost a great deal if North could pay some of his contract and is a level up from Brayshaw. Ed Richard would’ve been another. We are at the stage now where we have the quality in our list already. The only area I’d be willing to fork out cash would be for another midfielder.

Pendles will turn 34 in first week of January. I question if there's even one season left in the tank. He's one calf strain away from the knackery.

I like the look of Karl Amon on a wing for us. Chain him to Langers and build his tank over the preseason. A classy left footer.

Pretty sure Pendles is just ensuring a Pies extension, as he knows they have cap problems, but couldn’t face their members if he goes to another club. Realistically he gets another year and that is probably his last. He is still playing good football.

I have watched Smith carefully having know the family. Very ordinary player who gets a lot of mid time, runs forward all the time getting easy kicks, Disposal is average with little penetration.

I wonder if we'll start to hear more rumours this week about players from the 10 teams out if finals contention now?

Maybe we'll hear a few rumours leak from our own club with a few players begging to come next year. "Yup, we'll take you as a free agent Mr Billings, you'll be on 350k with performance incentives. We have standards here!"

Pert certainly intimated that players managers were making contact... so that's exciting.

There's a good reason why Polec isn't getting a game for the 18th placed side, it's because he's an absolute liability defensively. He's the definition of a 1-way runner who isn't prepared to adopt a team focus. People significantly underrate the work Gus does defensively on the wing for us, yeah he's not flashy but he plays his role very well.

It's really hard to bring in elite ball users through the trade period because if they are established players they require a lot of money (which we don't have) or they are unproven with significant other deficiencies (generally defence) in their game. Players like Dawson and Cerra would be beautiful but we will most likely be priced out of their market unless we unload one of our good players. Stephens or Richards would be worth taking a flier on but you wouldn't want to be giving up much to take the risk. Stephens could make a decent wingman, similar to Amon but why he's not getting a game at Sydney because of his defence. Richards is a similar player to Hunt who has been played out of position a lot, he'd best be suited to a half back flank. He's a much better kick than Hunt but is as soft as butter.

Bailey Smith is an interesting one, I disagree with those calling him soft, he's usually pretty hard at it when given a chance to play inside mid which is his best position, but that's the problem is the opportunity for him. It's not like Bont, Macrae, Dunkley, Libba, Treloar are that old he's still going to be stuck behind them for opportunity for at least the next few years. I think in time if he got full inside mid opportunity he could be a top 10 mid in the comp where he'd be better off to get that opportunity elsewhere but even if he did request a trade I couldn't see the dogs entertaining any offers like with Dunkley last year.

Wonder how much patience Matt Rowell will have at Gold Coast

Seemed either a tad disinterested this season or has lost confidence after his injuries. Started his career like a potential superstar so has the ability.  Would have him at the Dees in a heartbeat.

I think he's still impeded by injury, looks to be lacking a lot of energy in the way he moves.

Would not be surprised if he wanted to get back home in the next 12-18 months, his career has not gone according to plan so far

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
