Purely guessing:

Nathan Vardy (likely stays at Eagles if Hickey goes to the Swans)
Max Lynch - out of contract Collingwood ruck
Sam Hayes - 3rd in line to ruck at Port
Callum Coleman-Jones - Tigers could dump him for poor behaviour
Majak
Wylie Buzza - delisted by the Pies

forgot undelisting PEDOOOOO

Yes you make a good point Moonshadow. I guess I was thinking that if Tom McDonald and maybe Jetta were part of the two way package trade , that might free up some $  in the finances.

At this point we need pace. He is a luxury we aren’t in desperate need of. Good player, would be a great get for most teams - not us though.

I tend to agree - I suspect it's more about Mahoney trying to manage expectations.  Brown is locked in, and they will go hard at other options but given the lack of draft picks (and the fact that we don't know what we will get for what we trade out) he doesn't want to say we'll be able to get anyone else in.

Surely SURELY they would be looking for one or two of the following:

- another winger (left footer preferably)

- a pacy midfielder with decent skills

- pacy small pressure forward

- ruck insurance - eg if Max goes down and we don't want Jackson / Bradtke to carry all of the load

I reckon you're taking Mahoney at face value far too much. We need to shed players on the list first, so we can accumulate something resembling trade currency.

My estimation of Mahoney would go through the roof if he can construct a deal for Menegola. You’d think Gus would have to be sacrificed and TMac’s salary freed up to make it happen though.

I haven’t heard any whispers whatsoever linking him to us so its just wishful thinking for now but if he gettable then we should take a hard look.

This is spot on.

Winger: I'd be happy with Phillips, if Menegola or Clark were gettable we should be going really hard.

Pacy mid/Pacy small forward: I think Jack Higgins fills both and don't know why we don't seem to be going harder

Ruck Insurance: I'd take McKernan for a year or two as break glass in case of emergency

I'd also like to add a defensive minded small defender. Marley Williams is one I'd take who could be rookie draft or a late pick in national draft.

All of those wouldn't cost much at all and would definitely be within our capabilities in terms of currency.

u can't expect to win flags or make finals if a good trade period involves shaun mckernan and marley williams. realistically u should only sign players from other clubs to be best 22 and the existing players/draftees the onus is on them to earn their spots and push the recruits.

i would genuinely rather go into a season with 3 empty spots on our list and save 400k than list either of those players. mitch brown earnt a second season can pinch hit, weid can pinch, jackson can, tomlinson and smith can, bradtke is a ruckman. we dont need a mature 2 because shaun mckernan isnt a natural ruckman any more than any of those guys i listed.

Jed Anderson still not committing, personally he is exactly what I’d like to see coming our way. Age, skill set, pace all bang on. Shouldn’t cost the earth either?

Good tagger. Kicks like he doesn’t know which foot he uses. Not sure we’d be adding another inside mid.

Worst fire sale of list cloggers ever!!

Would rather give our guys a chance than them!

Why would you need a Marley Williams  when we already have Lovkhart?

Out of left field I know but St Kilda delisted key defender Logan Austin who has been cruelled by injury since 2018. Saints were not prepared to renew his contract.  I remember he looked like a potential star in his games in 2018 averaging 19 disposals and 7 marks at full back.

Free and not much dough contract wise. Would be handy to have if medically sound.

Preuss likely to get us a good draft pick to use.

This is for Werridee...

SALEM TOMLINSON HIBBERD

LANGDON VINEY (Polec)

HUNT BROWN MELKSHAM

PICKETT WEID FRITSCH

GAWN TRAC OLIVER

JACKSON RIVERS BRAYSHAW HARMES

Emerg - Vdberg Petty Sparrow Hannan

Alex Witherden is looking elsewhere and the Eagles are looking at him.

Surely the Dees could look at a highly skilled small defender to partner May and Lever.  As a Victorian boy, we can offer a lot and maybe use a 3rd round pick to squeeze him out of Brisbane.  Pick 43 would be my starting point.

Definitely need to get the Burgo medical clearance here.  He was very good in 2018 before getting hit with injury in 2019.

someone in another thread i forget who, but someone relatively on the money has said witho has categorically ruled out victoria. he is the heir apparent to shannon hurn over in the west, we're gonna regret not having the conversation.

i hope we are in for narkle definitely over nick bloody hind who realistically is lucky to be on a list, i hope his essendon connection is strong enough to pick them. cedric cox requested a trade west and hasnt received any interest i would try and nab him for some speed out of the back half even if we only get 2yrs from him before he requests home again we are really light on here for depth and it could push salo up the ground.

With a few teams digging in their heels and not meeting unreasonable trade demands may see some high(er) profile players stay at their club.

  • Port losing interest in Fantasia.
  • No apparent takers for Treloar, Phillips, Cox, Stephenson (Collingwood).
  • Bulldogs intent on keeping Dunkley
  • No takers for TMac
  • Caldwell stay at the Giants?

There are others that are stalemates that will probably get done:  Saad, Cameron.

Would expect pies to cave in to make two of their players tradeable.

This trade period is rapidly becoming a fizzer.

Its amusing that Pies and Ess are trying to concoct a deal that will entice the Bulldgos to play their game:  Dunkley to Ess, Treloar to Bulldogs and Bulldogs 1st round pick to pies.

Problem is Bulldogs aren't interested!

Treloar to Bulldogs is commentators 'connecting the dots' but apparently they haven't even spoken to him.

Essendon and Collingwood are the big logjams. I expect Essendon will eventually get moving. Carlton's offer for Saad is fair, the bombers just don't want to take it and want to maximise it. Same with Fantasia. Once that goes they can up their offer on Caldwell and then get serious on Dunkley.

Someone's going to take at least 1 of those Pies players I reckon. But there's no rush to help the Pies out, the longer everyone waits the bigger the fire sale.

Bulldogs would be silly to replace Dunkley with Treloar, given Treloar's age, injury history and massive contract. They also have no use for high draft picks this year with their Academy kid. Dunkley contracted for 2 more years, 24yo next year, he's going to be just as valuable if not more next year, it's a no brainer to hold him

Any chance to make a play for Lonie from St Kilda, small creative forward that would complement Pickett

He's the type of player we need, I just don't know if he's good enough for us to be interested.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
