Obviously I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes but can't help but feel we have mismanaged our list somewhat as we aren'tĀ competitive in acquiring services of players that would improve our 22.Ā Both Saad and Williams would have been fantastic for us off the back half but we were barely in the conversation. And now it appears we have to break contractsĀ just to be active in trade week.

Cap issues are speculation only...we were after Elliott as well last year, clearly a bit of room albeit not enough for a Cameron type acquisition youā€™d thinkĀ

    Obviously a bit older but someone i'd have a look at is Lewis Jetta from the Eagles, offers some assets we lack for the team off half back, premiership experience and looking a live possibility to be de-listed by the Eagles pending picks ups and so on during the trade period.Ā 

    If we get him as a DFA for nothing, i think he'd improve the half back line and give us some run and class that we're missing as well as serve as a great mentor for Salem/Rivers and cost us little to nothing.Ā 

    I'm not sure if he'd be interested in moving accross the country for 1-2 years but if he is, i think he'd be worth a look.Ā

    Langdon and Tomlinson rumoured to be 700k and 500k, that's your big fish.

    We shouldn't be pushed up against the cap but we should be planning to try to move salary out to allow us the freedom to make good early offers to our players before their contracts run out.

    Otherwise if we bring too many expensive players in we end up under the pump to sign our own guys who then become more expensive.

    Freo had very little bargaining power and they knew it. He wasn't going back. Apart from maybe a cursory meeting with the bombers Langdon only ever had interest in joining us and it was pretty clear why, we backed the truck up to get him. Still 200k cheaper than Brad Hill.

    Langdon is NOT on $700k. Thatā€™s fiction. I believe heā€™s got a five year contract worth around $2.4M.Ā And based on incentives for games played etc etc.Ā

    i wouldn't have thought langdon was on anything close to $700k a year

    yes still way cheaper than hill - and a far better year, too - but that would put him in our to handful of players

    in the herald-sun's made-up salary thingo he wasn't listed, i don't seem to remember?

    It won't take much to turn this team into a top 4 contender.Ā Ā

    MFC are lucky to get 25,000 at the 100kĀ capacityĀ MCG against an interstate side.

    We don't have the luxury of creating a colosseum-like atmosphere and environment for every home gameĀ so alreadyĀ we're at a disadvantage when comparing fixtures every year to the sides you've mentioned.

    It's the major reasonĀ Port have done so well during this compromised year and a huge factor in why Geelong do so well year upon year during the home and away season.

    And barely a standout team?

    I can only assume you don't watch too much football.

    The ''good'' teams today are ordinary when compared to those of the dominant past, but that's to be expected with equalisation measures that have impacted the competition more and more as times gone on.

    Melbourne have arguably 4 of the best 20-25 players in the competition.Ā  It's a tremendous building block.Ā  But we need better role players.

    The top 12 in our B&F were head and shoulders better than those who placed after.Ā  Too much was left to too few.Ā  And Goodwin needs tactical support.

    That said, the core ingredients for a top 4 team are well and truly in place.Ā  And that's where flags are won from.

    You're not convinced ?Ā  I'm shattered.

    I donā€™t rate him at all, I watched a few Saints games this year and I just donā€™t think he impacts the game.Ā

    You'd assume he means Trac/Gawn/Oliver May.

    Have no qualms saying 4 in the best 50 but seeing May didn't even make 40 man AA squad (STILL AN UNJUST OVERSIGHT THAT MUST BE AVENGED) a bit too hard to argue.

    From what I've heard Saints fan were happy with his first half of the year, then he fell off the cliff for the second part half of it.

    He's never really struck me as anything special but with our midfield to dish it out for him would rather go down that route than Smith. Would require us giving up a half decent pick tho...or Gus..

    i wouldn't be using the AA team as a basis for determining the best players.Ā The best midfielders perhaps.

    May is one of the top 3 defenders. Gawn is no.2 ruck. Only dusty tops Trac. Oliver is an AA alreadyĀ (but and can improve with proper coaching). I'll even throw Langdon into the conversation as one of the best wingmen in the comp. I think he's underrated when you compare to someone like Brad Hill at the saints. We're got good youngsters coming through as well.

    I think we have a great foundation. Better coaching and a KPF and wingman added and we're in with a great shout of Top 4 next year.

    would be an absolute kick in the guts if he slots in at FB replacing the aging roughead next year for them when we've been lacking a capable second tall defender pretty much since he moved forward

      The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory.       And just like that, weā€™re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury toĀ  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the teamā€™s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - ā€œnam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin ambā€ which roughly translated is ā€œevery heart beats true for the red and the blue.ā€ >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last weekā€™s below par performance.

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeatĀ  gallantly.

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscrayā€™s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last weekā€™s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
