Good get on Suckling.  I guess Brad Hill is a live chance too ...

I was initially going to laugh at your comment as the joke it should be, but 2020 has been a pretty weird year, so a St Kilda flag wouldn't feel out of place.

There would be some weird logic if they did win it. I will have ended up in some very low probability branch of the wave function.

Interesting on Frost. I thought he was very good for the Hawks this year. Picked his moments. Did well one-on-one. No chook with its head cut off runs. Neatish disposal. I put that down to decent coaching.

Back on Smith. Those saying he will improve the team next year, maybe? He has declined considerably over the past two years. Maybe 2021 is the year he hits the wall like Jones and Jetta did for us this year. If you bring him in it is one less person in the right age group that gets a chance to perform/develop. Also, with  the salary cap it prevents you from competing for free agency players that are looking for a bigger pay packet.

You should only top up with 32 year olds if you are:1. An extremely young list. We did this Cross. or 2. In the premiership window. Even then it is a risky business.

We are neither. Our guns are primarily 24-25. They need the support of other guys in that age group.

If you run at the wall enough times then eventually you'll pass right through. ?

Will admit to not watching a lot of the Hawks the last 2 years, but statistically speaking he hasn't dropped off.

Remember this year games were 20% shorter and his disposal numbers went down by about that same margin.

If we dont get Smith. Can i ask, why doesnt Christian Salem get a gig on the wing? The idea he doesnt have a tank is not based on evidence.    He was second to Langdon on average distance run in a game. He has our highest speed recorded for 2020 (admittedly this stat seems a little subject to error, but he's definitely not slow).  Simply, he's a great runner and a great kick.  Im probably missing something. Maybe it was tried and i blinked and missed it.

Interestingly, when Tomlinson was playing as a key defender this year we were 5 wins and 2 losses. With Oscar 3W / 4L. With Joel Smith alone (or just May and Lever),  1W / 2L.

So he clearly fits the defensive system pretty well and a mobile big body who can keep opponents on the ground in marking contests.

Matt Suckling would have with the Bulldogs had he not injured his achilles int he semi-final.

And let's see what happens with Grant Birchall ....

Sam Mitchell received 2 years at WC. If hadn't of retired after the first year, he possibly could have played in the 2018 flag instead of assistant coaching them to it?

I like your thinking. Not sure Salem is that quick off the mark, but he can work up a pace to run down and tackle opponents. Certainly has the disposal and decision-making to be a winger. My question is who would replace Salem as the distributor in defence?

I would of tried Salem on the wing personally but I do think he’s too slow.

I.Smith hasn’t really lost any pace or lost his elite kicking. He probably hasn’t stood out that much due to Hawthorns decline the past 2 years, but I’d get him in a heart beat. Won’t cost us a trade, he’s got finals experience, good leader, elite skills, elite running, would increase out efficiency inside 50. All of which we need. If he’s only at the club for 2 years, who gives a rats. We need to get better as a club and play finals consistanty year after year, and ultimately win grand finals. He will help us do these things.

Stuff the logic that we’re not in the premiership window. We’ll challange if we tidy up a few areas and recruit for needs. We’re not as far off as some people think.

Yea, its a small robbing peter to pay paul situation. But i figure our defence is a lot more settled now (both lever and may effective kicks) and Rivers is a neat kick, I think its worth a decent try.  Maybe he's eternally pigeon holed by Goodwin's preconceived notions and biases.   We cant have another season of winning the ball and not hitting the scoreboard and nothing new considered.  Thats insane.

Salem reached the top speed for a Melbourne player on the field in 2020.  But I agree he doesn't look anything above pedestrian.

Salem has played on a wing before, but plays his best footy behind the ball, which is easier and he does it effectively.

If anyone here has used GPS watches or computers for cycling or running, they are definitely not reliably accurate.

Im not sold that Salem is our quickest for the year

I’ve only used GPS on cycling computers and running for 14 years. They’re highly accurate so you’re right they’re not reliably accurate except for the fact they’re reliably accurate - to the metre.

I’m unclear just what point you’re making

For all the people bagging Tomlinson on a wing....we may have recruited him for that role but he is clearly better in our backline.  He has barely missed a beat all year.  For you baggers you would prefer Omac?  I don't get the angst about him one bit.  He is automatic best 22 and he rarely stands out doing silly things during the course of a game.  Worth the $$$ we spent on him.

What a complete load of crap. Wiffed about a hundred marks played OK towards the end but for a big money free agent he's a dud.

Hawks have offered him a 2 year deal, which they normally don't do for over 30s.

According to the press Clint?  The Hawks would be very pleased to offload him to us i reckon.

Seriously in for a world of pain already in 2021 if we think we need a player well past his prime and about to check out.

If this is fair dinkum and goes ahead we have officially turned in to the AFL's legit aged care retirement village and be lucky to win a flag this side of 2070.

Can someone give a brief summary of the article please..

He marked most that came his way....i would say watch some of our games some time.  He got better as the year went on.  Not sure what game you are watching lol.  You are way off the mark!

It's nothing you haven't heard already.

Ralph only mentions us by name as being interested, but apparently other Vic clubs are circling.  Doesn't say who though, so that strikes me as speculation more than anything

He would be a good get but would prefer Polec.

The wife who is a Hawks tragic is telling me we have offered Isaac Smith a 2 year deal with the option of a third, not sure on what coin. She thinks the Hawks have offered one year plus a second depending on performance. Interesting! She reckons he will stay.

In the Jordan Lewis sense of campaigner, I assume.

I've met him a number of times (not recently) and have never discussed football with him. He doesn't strike me as a campaigner at all. He's quite aloof though. Maybe it's a white line thing

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
