Issac is a great bloke! and i think he was genuinely considering coming to the Dees but at that stage it would have been 2 years knowing he'd be having a crack at a flag vs 2 years of maybe scraping into finals if he was lucky.

I also think Geelong the town was a pretty big factor in his call.

Nice to hear from a bloke who's won a few flags that he thinks we're in a strong position though

Agreed.

Geelong came later in the piece and he was influenced by the opportunity to get out of the Melbourne rat race.

His dealings with the Demons were above board and honourable. He had a high opinion of Goody and this almost got him over the line.

Yes, he changed his mind but this decision should not reflect badly on him. We all change our minds on all manner of things, in particular job offers, but that does not make us dishonest.

I am told that before leaving the Hawks, he spoke openly and honestly to Clarko, Kennett and others about the Hawks direction and his own position vis a vis the club.

When the Dees beat the Hawks this year, the first bloke he congratulated was Goody.

Isaac is one of the good guys.

As it is, it worked out for both Isaac and the Dees. He loves Geelong and we were able to focus on our own list.

To add to this, i don't think we can underestimate the role Angus Brayshaw has played on the wing as a result, i'd suggest he will feature quite highly in the Bluey for his team first defensive wing role, he works his backside off helping offensive transition, but is always back helping out the defenders as well, rarely lets his opponent influence the game.

Issac has had a great year for the cats, and i doubt even Simon Goodwin thought we'd have been beating the cats in a prelim at the start of the year

While I'm sure Isaac maybe had a small "what if" type thought after the loss, he still has 3 premierships that he can hang his hat on.

Excellent player. He had a very good season with Geelong and will finish Top 10 B&F, possibly Top 5. i'm sure he would have been a great addition for us. That said i'm glad things worked out as they did because Gus got the opportunity to play wing and has done very well.

There is common saying one door closes and another door opens.

We missed out on Issac but got Ben Brown and some games into James Jordan and Tom Sparrow are we better off.

Jayden Hunt got back to pre-forward form and Jake Bowey showed his wares are we better off.

If the answer is yes then we did not get a 31 year old who decided to hang is shingle on the Cats and lost.

He would have only been recruited to help us win the flag.  We will do this without him, whilst consolidating and blooding a number of young players.

With the 20 minute QTR coming back and less rotations,  the grandpas will need their walking sticks. Geelong have missed the boat, Smith is not this great winger anymore, just like Ablett was no better then a good ordinary football when he came back.

10 months on, how prophetic.  🤗❤️💙❤️💙

Lucky he chose the Cats. Otherwise he’d be playing at Casey 😜

He made the right decision.
We have Ed Langdon, Angus Brayshaw, Captain Jack Sparrow and James Jordan who are all doing a magnificent job.
Issac would be playing at Casey with Luke Dunstan and Jake Melksham

A win win outcome. We get to see Gus reinvented as a winger and become a lock in our first 22 whilst at the age of 32 he gets to feel like a young whipper snapper around his new team mates.

Had he came to MFC, im not sure where he would have actually played. Im quite happy with Brayshaw and Lingers on the wings.

It is rather obvious, he would have strengthened Casey somewhat, on a permanent basis. That is where he would have experienced gametime. He looked sensibly at our team and the influence of Yze and Chocko, compared himself to our players, and realised that he couldn't cut the mustard.

I was vocally opposed to giving him a three year deal but we are dreaming if we think he wouldn't have been in the best 22 last year. Just like Isaac is dreaming thinking he made the right decision to turn us down.

Isaac chose Geelong for lifestyle reasons. That was the primary reason. To state that Isaac did not think he would cut the mustard at Melbourne is absurd. He wanted to escape the city. He also has family connections to the Geelong area.

In footy terms it worked out for Isaac, the Cats and the Demons.

But he did make the right decision.  His priorities are family, lifestyle then work (footy).

Fair enough. Good for him. He has won multiple flags already. Still think it's odd that in hindsight he would still not choose to come to us and have the ultimate success again.

Just shows that he really was hanging out for that retirement contract and isn't interested in winning. Good result for us.

We weren’t much chop when he had to decide between us and Geelong. After all their stocks looked better coming off a GF. We were still fumbling outside the 8. He thought they were the better prospect for another premiership.

He now knows that we won last year and look likely to challenge again and he still wouldn't have chosen to come to us. Says all I need to know. He is happy with the success he already has and is happy with his decision.

Truly. This is great for him. But it also 100% reinforces my opinion at the time that I didn't want to give a big three year contract for a player who was content.

He has played better than I thought he would at Geelong. Not having him on good coin is a really good outcome for us.

Probably would have been a fair player at that level too.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
