I've heard that Polec would like to come to the Dees and has informed NM of that, but it sounds as though the informal chats the two clubs have had around what a trade might look like, we've been a fair way apart. Sounds like North are quite delusional on his trade value, and are really keen to shed his contract from their books and MFC's interest is conditional on only paying a limited portion of his salary and have a significantly reduced trade value on him.

It sounds like whoever wants Ben Brown is going to encounter similar hurdles

Brown is out of contract so whoever gets him will pay his full salary.

Now is not the time to Be weak in trade dealings We need to be creative as our list needs  Polec and Brown so we may have to give something up For both.$

Seems like an odd strategy from North though.  Dropped both Polec and Brown and made them feel as popular as a fart in an elevator.    No doubt they can hold onto the contracts if they want to, but you would think that's some sort of cultural millstone around their neck.  I think they've backed themselves into a corner with this a little and it seems from the rumours that the relationship with Shaw might be hard to recover.

I imagine if we're interested it will be a balancing act between salary and draft picks.  Ie.  North pay none of his salary =  low draft pick.  North pay some of his salary -  mid range draft pick, North pay a chunk of his salary - high draft pick.

I get that they want a return on investment, but they can't expect another club to pick up the tab on something of their own creation.

Mate it's strange, some of the decisions that club is making at the moment are just incredible.

I personally believe when you push guys out of your club publicly you've gotta expect minimal compensation. the way the Polec Situation has gone, there is no way he's going back there. they should be happy we'll take on a part of his salary and get him off the books for them.

I don't get the impression we're being unreasonable with our requests either, we just have a really clear idea what we think he's worth, and we're very interested at that price

That club are so incompetent they legitimately think they are making a statement, yet are single handedly removing any form of success or hope for the future.

I gather they have finally come to the to the realisation they will never attract a decent free agent or out of contract player, therefore have no choice but to start with bare bones.

I’m not sure a club like North (or us for that matter) can afford to do that.

Any idea what we're offering? I suspect they want our second rounder while we wouldn't want to give more than a 3rd? Or is it haggling over how much of the contract each club will pay?

It is strange, if true. North are in a no win situation now.

It's been hard for North to land free-agents because those free agents could see that the list was right at the end of its run, and they were that good anyway. We were like that, where substantial free agents and wantaways wouldn't come because we weren't attactive. The best way to start attracting players to your club is to build a core group of players that make others think that they have a successful future. After that it's self-fulfilling because the good players now attract good players which makes them successful which attracts good players etc.

But they need to just eat the [censored] sandwich for a few years so that they can build a young group that can attract others. They have an extra first round pick, so it will be interesting to see how they attack the trade period.

As for what they do with Polec, I suppose that's entirely dependent on whether they think the relationship is salvageable. If they think they can then the only downside is whatever compensation we'd be offering them, which may not be much.

Not too sure mate but i was told it was a combination of the trade value, and the contract % paid by each club.

I think North would like us to pay all or most of his contract

and i reckon you're right they'd want our pick 23 or whatever it is and we're probably thinking more a third or fourth rounder

Just read an article from Jon Ralph saying that Polec is more than likely to stay at north now after receiving “almost no interest” from rival clubs.

Maybe we're not super interested, could be due to his personality issues I keep hearing about.

"Polec has had only extremely limited interest from one interstate club and despite an indifferent season where he was dropped is more likely to remain on the club’s list.

The Roos are aware of his deficiencies as a player but at his best he remains a hard-running precise-kicking wingman, albeit one with limited physicality."

Considering the contract he is on, and the season he just had, this isn't surprising.  I don't think any club wants to take on a large chunk of his contract for the next few seasons.

North are in massive trouble, they will need to add a lot of Delisted Free agents to fill there list.  The club could be heading to Tasmania the way they are going.

Absolutely

We probably don't want both Smith and Polec.

Is there speculation we are into Smith?

I'm really not a fan of being the retirement home for old players unless we pick them up for virtually nothing.

Smith would be a short term fix.

Seemed to work out OK for Brian Lake to squeeze out 3 Hawthorn premierships.

I think Lake was 'only' 29 when he was traded, big difference to a 32yo in football years anyway. Smith will probably fall off a cliff next year if he's losing his pace.

Kangas are desperate. Could Rhys Shaw be in trouble? Why are they so keen on Roos and Blakey?

It's nice to watch both the Kangas and Essendon implode. And I'm generally not the vindictive type.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
