What they're saying down at Barkly Street

  • Thank god that Max Gawn isn’t playing otherwise it would be a blood bath but Preuss is still not a bad ruckman who is very strong.
  • Gawn is significant but our ins are better.
  • Tom Mcdonald hasnt done anything for two years. I'm sure Gardner will be nice and help him recapture that 2018 form where he kicked 7 goals in those two games against us.
  • Pruess will eat English up and we will struggle again out of the centre in my view.
  • If Petracca is drilling it out of the centre to McDonald it could be a long painful game where we get behind quickly.
  • I don’t rate melbourne at all. We should win.
  • Keath to the in form Weideman please. Not Gardner.
  • I am worried about Gardner being in the team he will not get it as easy as last week when our midfield dominated. Tom Macdonald will be sleeping easy tonight.
  • May has tightened up this year, Lever you can get a hold on, Bruce just needs to be accountable and naughts will destroy whos left.
  • Keen to see Preuss against English. Surely will dominate the taps with strength but Timmy will win in impact around the ground.
  • Melbourne's high performance manager Darren Burgess remains confident the 206cm ex-Kangaroo will be available to take on the Bulldogs, but he will be monitored ahead of Saturday's game.
  • Looking forward to Bruce dominating this week if picked, as it sounds like all that was missing for him to tear games apart was Naughton beside him.
  • May isn't slow, but Naughton has him covered for agility. Really small turning circle for a tall.
  • The ultimate battle between the league's best ''flat track bullies''.
  • I dont think Melbourne are good but I don't trust us at all.
  • Melbourne are weak as [censored]. Richmond absolutely toyed with them.
  • I like the idea of Lever on Naughton. Lever has been really poor pretty much his entire tenure at the Dees.
  • Naughton I think has both May and Lever covered. May is more suited to Bruce but Lever on Naughton is a nightmare for Melbourne.
  • Melbourne are a good developing side - they are awesome when you don't match their intensity in the middle - but the don't always appear to have much else if they aren't dominating centre square.
  • If they get it in quick to McDonald, Weideman and Fritsch, then they could have a field day. Remember McDonald kicked 4 or 5 against us one game and Fritsch took 14 marks.
  • If we bomb it, I’m confident May and Lever will counteract Naughton.
  • Surely having our best two players - both better than anyone on Melbourne's list - in cracking form will be enough to tip the balance in our favour?
  • Their midfield matches ours ok (now that Brayshaw is getting back to form) with ours batting one "good" mid deeper.
  • I don't rate Melbourne at all. Our midfield is superior to their's and we will have a field day. Sure Oliver and Petraca have done well but against who? The Bont and Macrae racked up 70 disposals against Brisbane who have a very good midfield, and as you say who is going to stop Naughton?

They rate themselves, don’t they?

since we run a zone defense with May closer to goal and Lever next out, I dint think it is as simple as who takes who.  Bruce is a big sook.  If we keep him quiet early he will stay that way.  They bat one deeper in the midfield?  As I understand it, you only have a fixed number there at centre bounces...

anyhoo, let’s see how it pans out.  Anyone remember when we shellacked them at the Western oval to make the finals?

Yes, I do and I was there. It was a great day.

If both sets of fans were honest they'd say they have no idea which version of their respective teams will turn up today. Slightly worrying perhaps is that it's now their turn to have a season defining game.

We are weak as [censored] because Richmond toyed with us two months ago??? Wouldn’t say they toyed with us that day but anyhoo. What did the Tigers do to them recently?

We lost that Toigs game in the 2nd quarter. They outscored us by 24 points (0.1 to 4.1) and the final margin was 27 points.

Contrast that with the Dogs losses: 52 to the Pies, 39 to the Saints, 52 to the Blues, 41 to the Toigs and 24 to the Loins.

They're still to play the Cats and Eagles.

for a team that's been similarly irrelevant for 50+ years as us, winning 1 flag out of absolutely nowhere sure does fill them with confidence.

Should be a good game anyway.

Pretty sure the team that's won 2 out of the last 3 flags and probably should have won the other one as well have toyed with a few sides in recent years including the bulldogs.

they haven't fired any sort of shot since 2016 and until they stop living on past glories they'll continue to be irrelevant.

About 7 years ago I tried to convince the then fiancé (now wife) that we should be buying in Footscray, it’s in the up and up and we can get a bargain/make a mint in resale... she was sceptical.
I organised a few viewings for a Sat morning to convince her... got there nice and early and wanted to show her around the area and see how eclectic and diverse it was, wandered up and down Barkly st and surrounds for around an hour.. by the time we made it back to the car to head off to the first viewing she was in tears! “Don’t make me live here, I’m too pretty for this place!”

I may have suggested she is ok but don’t get ahead of yourself... was a funny morning and we’ve never been back.

There is a pub in Footscray charging $100 for a steak. I kid you not.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
