Sometimes you need an ugly win. I'll take it

When is the last time we won any other way?

The Demons in the crowd did a great job and should be given their share of credit for the win.ย  The radio online was picking up their hollering and howling all game, and it set a tone.

Having Goodwin down on the bench being animated and giving constant instructions late in the last quarter was a moment on par with finding out that the Easter Island heads have bodies.

The umps were horrific.ย
ย

One in particular when Rankine was caught cold by Langdon when he tried to run around after he marked it and the ump called it high. Should have gone to us.ย

There were others but I canโ€™t remember them atm.ย

The down the field prior to that was just as bad.

The umpiring was terrible both ways

We just look more balanced with Weed in the side, even if he doesnโ€™t mark the ball as he creates a contest we can feed off and alwaysย has good second and third efforts.

There were to many.. the umpiring in all games is a great concern.. decisions that are paid versus ones that are not is out of control.ย

Seriously though, Weid, though I thought he was average, needs to play every game for the rest of the year. He only needs to take two marks inside 50 per game and will more often than not kick both. The only thing that will teach him to be the player he can be will be time in the ones

Problem is he is a complete liability if he doesnโ€™t mark it. Whether that be following up the mark attempt with something on the ground or knocking it to advantage I donโ€™t think I saw him do that once.

Ah NOOO1

Viney was really good tonight, our best I thought. Holding the ball interpretation was in complete contrast to this afternoons games. No wonder people get frustrated with the game. It's hard to know where this GC side will sit at years end but to beat them when they are up and about is a good foundation to build on going forward.ย

Good to CP5 nail the clincher. Heโ€™s coming into the player we always wanted. Sloppy by foot tonight but still massive. Heโ€™s the type that want to step up and win games.ย

Mays disposal is starting to be a real concern, some horrible errors.ย but he ย wasย there in the clinches at the end along with lever. Kozzie looking like SUCH aย prospect and dare Iย say it, we are definitely a better side with Omac back in the teamย

I think his lickย with two minutes to go, may turn him into an outstanding player. His inability toโ€™ kick straightforward goals has been a real downer. That was a class act under pressure

Kid has just flown under the radar because he's been injured. Had one of the best u18 carnivals I can remember and can play anywhere on the ground . Could win a brownlow one day

Hard fought contest, thought we were looking shaky in the middle of the last. Still hit and miss with disposal but you canโ€™t knock the determination to get over the line. Vineyย especially, some of his defensive work was inspiring and team lifting.ย
Nice to have the kids smiling again after a game.ย

A good win, more so being down one with some playersย still working into full fitness. Connection and forward movement improved but still so much more scope. Great to see Trac own the moment and some players show some cool heads in the final minutes. ย We need more rebound from half back and our mids still too many times go after the same ball and nullify each other.ย

Terrific win.

Yes we made any number of skill errors and poor decisions. But we got the job done.

Top Rankine had a shot at goalย that would have given them the lead with not that many minutes left and they had the momentum. We worked hard to arrest that momentum and critically scored against the flow, which is what good teams do.

A three goalย win is about what we deserved given we were the better side for most of the match. And a three goalย win (in a game with 16 minute quarters)ย is nothing to sneeze at in a match that was even in the betting, meaning we beat our line by 18 points.

I was furiousย after the blues win, not even relieved. After this win i feel both relieved and pleased. Incomparable. We were so much better that we were in the blues game and we played a much better team.

Credit where credit is due for goody:

  • in terms of selection he made the changes he needed to (though it is ironic that we ended up playing small forward line anyway)
  • tactically we slowed things down a bit and looked for the kick on the angle much more and went down the line much less
  • he madeย some interesting positional moves - Salem playing higher, Melksham the same, Max pushing back and May forward late
  • i reckon he got in Weeds ear as he was much improved after half time in terms of intensity andย defensive work.
  • also clearly theย message about looking for the right option inside 50 was heeded (if they miss a target so be it but that is so much better than kicking it to an out number)ย

Maxy was huge as was Viney. That is leadership.

I loved Oliver's effort if not his execution.

I thought Weed slotting his two goals was huge. Great for his confidence after that miss last year in the Alice.

VDB got the memo about impact players needing to have an impact and his tackling was a massive factor in that last quarter. Some very sore Suns boys

And our second last goalย was simply brilliant, on a few levels - Oliver making the right decision not to go long (which given the circumstances he would have been well within his rights to so), but instead choosing the hit up to Trac. The decision was the important thing but of course brilliant for him that he hit his target.

And trac took a good strong mark and i loved that after aย simply woeful kicking game he never looked like trying to give it off or look for a passย  and instead tookย the responsibility. Again the decision making was what was most important. The fact that he executed was also brilliant, but in some ways a bonus. But obviously great for him to nail it in terms of his confidence.

The last goal was fun. Clever kick by Kozzie (who i reckon would have been a bit challenged to be put in the shade by top Rankin, who played much the same role)

And of course Harley was never going to miss it. He has such an economical, tight kicking action- it reminds me Wattsy's action. Unlike Tracc, very few moving parts. He didn't have an outstanding game but his class and balance shone.

And how magnificent was the passion and emotion after he slotted itย and the boys getting around him. This team is not goingย though the motions

On that last point one of the players in the huddle who hugged Harley wasย a clearly emotional Hibberd (who was terrific again),ย as he was after kicking his goalย and kissing his arm band and pointing to the sky in tribute to his brother (who by all accounts he was incredibly close with, his closest mate). It gave me a lump in my throat and reminded me that this is just a game.

I was going to post some negatives but happy Garry Baker avatarย told me leave it 'till tomorrow and enjoyย the positives and the win for what it was.ย He also reckons i should watch the Goody presser now and enjoy Goody's sly smile and likely repeated reference to Melbourne footyย and i think i'll take both bits of sage advice.

Trac had a bit of a mare tonight but that goal he kicked in the last was priceless.ย
ย

It also showsย his maturity in that his game was below average but still had the smarts to recognise the importance of the moment and kick the goal.ย

Petraccaย was brilliant. More of a stallion than a mare.

I thought Salem was fantastic early, faded after half time but showed just how good he can be. Would love to see him play further up the ground, as good as his kicking is coming out of defense I reckon it would be better going inside 50 and the defensive side of his game hurts him across half back

TMac averages 8 disposals,ย  0.8 goals,ย  3.4 marks, 2.6 score involvements this season.ย

Today Weid kicked 2 goals from 7 disposals, took 3 marks and had 3 score involvements.ย

ย

TMac hasnt been in form but if he kicked 2 goals per week we'd have been happy. In addition, although Weid didn't take many marks and also ran under the ball a free times,ย I feel he hit and halved contests much more often than TMac has over the last 4 weeks, creating more ground ball opportunities.

Very concerned about levers future in this team.

Next week is very interesting.ย  If it goes back to vs richmond we know where we stand.

Omac played well enoughย  which also helped Lever play better and concentrate on his intercepts. Lever held his own.

WEID straightened us up kicked 2 goals and took 2 contested marks oneย  which resulted in a goal.

Missed Tmac as he was starting to show some form andย  IMOย  it was because of another tall that was showing his presence. The weid.

Took the pressure off Tmac. Hope his injury is not too serious.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecastโ€”20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze โ€” expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kateโ€™s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwoodโ€™s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isnโ€™t a standard conceptโ€”itโ€™s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasnโ€™t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's ย six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his teamโ€™s unfulfilled potential rang true โ€ฆ well, almost.ย
