The fact that this only effects the Essendon V Melbourne is a big tick for the AFL and strong vindication for the measures they put in place e.g training hubs, shorter qtrs and an intensive testing regime.

As much as I wanted us to play tomorrow, the fact that their strategy seems to be robust enough to survive a few positive tests is great and means we are pretty likely to get through the season.

they were 24 hours away from the possibility of two teams being at risk.

Was just luck that he was not selected to play Sydney last week(and I assume no scratch match) or that would have added two more teams at risk

You can, but my understanding is that false negatives are quite uncommon.

It's common to have the virus but show no symptoms, but that's completely separate.

Apparently the type of result he produced yesterday (the "irregularity") was a low viral count, with today's test a higher count, suggesting it's in the early days. That's consistent with the idea he got it quite recently.

Regardless, the key will be the next round of testing on Essendon players and staff.

McKenna is to be investigated by the AFL according to The Age to see whether he breached COVID protocols. He is suspected of having breached them. If so Essendon should default the game.

False negative can happen of course. As it did with that fella who died in QLD. But as you say uncommon.

Tuesday a big day for Essendon, but even more so for the AFL.

It would appear he got it in the last 2 days. The big question is how, given the protocol they are supposed to follow.

For those minimising the decision by kozzie and spargo to go partying this situation shows how utterly stupid that decision was.

Yes i still say they got off lightly, considering they could produce nothing on paper.
You only have to watch the start of the 2012 season to know something was going on over there.

This season is far too compromised already. The fact that they announced a postponement to the season prior to our round one match was a minor grizzle. Whatever resolution they find for the latest development will create further intolerable inequities whatever they decide. That's on top of hubs and travel and the sacrifices already going on.

I'm guessing AFLHQ will either split the points or award us the win. If it's the latter and continues over the next couple of rounds then Essendon have been effectively and unfairly erased from the shortened season through no real fault of their own. We'd be outraged if it happened to us. And what happens to the next team with the positive Covid result? It will become an absolute farce if teams are eliminated one by one due to misfortune. 

If it's the former - we split the points - then the integrity of the competition this year is finished already. Meanwhile, we're robbed of possible percentage points and match fitness. Imagine we were meant to be playing Gold Coast (old Gold Coast) and we didn't get a potential percentage boost while almost every other team gets one. The only solution is to somehow eliminate percentage this year. 

The season is over. They need to pivot immediately and come up with some revised competition that doesn't include the ordinary flag. I have no idea what that would look like. I do in fact have one idea but it's pretty radical and warped. Still working on it. Any suggestions from the brains trust on here?

The community where that guy lived was astonished that the govt at first attempted to put it down as a WuFlu death. The poor guy was in the terminal stages of cancer and he was not going to survive.

The pressure for the AFL to salvage some dollars out of this season will be immense. Let's hope it was a false positive, or at a minimum no other Essedon players or staff caught it from McKenna.

the best solution and in the interests of kirnerism i think all clubs (maybe excluding essington) should be awarded a premiership cup and banner for 2020. Likewise all players who have played a minimum of 5 games in 20020 should be awarded the brownlow.

the clubs, the fans and the sponsors would be rapt

Does anyone remember six to seven years ago when another team had a problem with a mass intake program that resulted in several members wanting out, and one in fact leaving over concern for his wife's situation? If you do, one scenario in the present moment could/has the potential to unfold very much the same way . A player goes home to his pregnant wife and/children after training and very difficult problems start occurring for a lot of very innocent/ unsuspecting people. This must not be allowed to happen again.

No it is not alright. I would assume it is in contravention of the AFL rules, which are much stricter than those for the community.

Somewhat ironic that 1 Essendon player and 2 of our players were caught breaking the rules and then we are now the clubs getting punished by the karma bus.

Hopefully everyone  is ok and the AFL find a reasonable solution.

Possibly more alarming is that this might be a community transmission and might indicate there are now a lot of asymptomatic people walking around in Melbourne right now. If we were all tested twice a week I think the case numbers would skyrocket.
